Recommended Posts

Monday - And possibly First Sail - Time to start a new thread?

I called a few local scenic flight companies but they were all booked up already, with today being a national holiday here - Damn!

How much breeze are you seeing up there?

Great shot, kite!

The weather reads like it should be a good day for some sea trials and a tack or two.

I do hope the report that it will travel to San Diego is correct.

If they want a good chance of catching this wind, they should head towards the east entrance to the strait, south of Lopez Island. That will give them plenty of runway too.

Brother's Donzi is up out of the water at a chandelry on Lake Union, can't get it, but... Here's some good news:

We have Anarchists heading out onto the water, right now!

Doubt they'll be able to keep up for very long, but they'll do their best - Fingers crossed - Stay tuned!

Can you keep us updated as to where they are heading? I might be able to get out there later this morning.

My view is looking southeast through cattle pass (channel between south end of Lopez and San Juan island) - There is about 8kts of breeze there right now - will keep an eye out ;)

On the pics - interesting to note the overlapping headsails and how far aft the shrouds are - in contrast to some of the things said in other threads.

Yes - I noticed that too.

I can't keep updates running for you, but if there are any then please - someone, anyone - keep an eye on these two sites for updates in case they can come thru for us, from the water? And paste updates to here?

Me, I'm heading up there now and - if they DO go out (and the hot rumor is that the sailors ARE at the boat and mainsail is now on the boat too) then I'll probably charter a San Juan Islands plane and try get a couple pics for us all, and post them here later today. The plane is (tentatively) lined up for noon local, 2 and half hours from now.

Possible updates in the mean time:

True on the shrouds.

Overlap ... yes, some but not very much. Certainly nothing like the 150% of J LP's that mono's got saddled with by the IOR rule. A little overlap reduces drag from the mast, more than that is not very helpful unless you need really high AoA and high lift. If you can increase the area with span, overlap is not a good use of area.

This is going to be an awesome Larbor Day event!!! It pains me to be in YVR....so close yet so far ;-)

A couple of requests -

Can someone post a Goggle map of the trial area & dock?

Can someone get a shot or look at the battle flags?

Thanks for the coverage once again. Maybe you should run up a SA flag to see if you get a ride a Tri :D

Last seen at south end of Lopez Island, no sails yet as of 30 min. ago. A dozen folks at Washington Park beach watching the tow south down Rosario. Sorry for crappy camera phone image.

I got a good look at her from the 10:25 Anacortes Ferry out of Friday Harbor. What a treat. She drew a pretty good size crowd of gawkers, both from the Ferry and from a small Armada trailing her through he water. No sails up, just the BMWO banners, etc. Awesome sight never-the-less!

Where is she headed?

From the website:

01.09.2008 CETtrans.gif

New boat starts shakedown.

BMW ORACLE Racing starts shakedown of new boat in Anacortes.

One week after being launched, BMW ORACLE Racing’s new 90-foot multihull yacht hoisted sail here for the first time today and began its shakedown in 6-8 knots of breeze over four hours of testing on the Rosario Strait.

“This boat is incredibly challenging,” said team CEO and Skipper Russell Coutts. “We will take it conservatively in this testing session as we learn more about the boat and its potential.”

After leaving the dock at 11am, the team first hoisted the 5,000 square foot (500 meters square) mainsail up the 158-foot (48-meter) carbon fiber mast towering above the trimaran. Along with 14 sailing team crew on board today were eight members of the design and build team who continued structural and systems reviews.

The team partnered with Van Peteghem and Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) of France to design the innovative trimaran. One of the most successful skippers in multihull racing, Franck Cammas, has also consulted to the team and is the boat’s helmsman for the Anacortes shakedown.

Led by Mark Turner and Tim Smyth, the BMW ORACLE Racing construction team built the carbon composite boat over a nine month period. With engineers on the team, BMW provides its unique technological competence in intelligent lightweight design, and specialist expertise in finite element analysis and EfficientDynamics technology.

The new yacht is a key element of the team’s preparation for the next America’s Cup, representing San Francisco’s Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC), on which a ruling is expected from the New York State Court of Appeals in the next six months.

The initial on-the-water testing session will continue in Anacortes until the middle of September.

Okay. But here's one BIG caveat: There is NO WAY that I can top the current shot at bmworacleracing.com

Further, I never got a single shot of her with the headsail up - or even of her sailing! So savor each one for what it's worth.

But in some other more minor respects, such as the very first - and maybe only - aerial shots of DoGZilla's maiden voyage - well... I'm not going to disappoint ;)

Words cannot do justice to what I got to see today. Totally unbelievable boat speed. Will upload some pics here momentarily

Many thanks to Lowlys Angel and Mo Fuzz for the assistance today. With possibly the exception of LA motoring in front of Dogzilla as they cut her loose and having to "pedal faster" to get out of the way

Pilot Jim had the plane waiting. He took a bunch of BOR guys out last week to take a close look at the possible tracks. They saw (yikes) lots of Orca pods while up. He's been flying these waters for 35 years, non-stop.

Video now up at DoGzilla buzz! Farkin' amazing.

Ok, no sense having any supports boats pacing DoGzilla as the thing is too farkin fast. Looks like they have to park DoGzilla to let the support boats catch up.

Btw I don't think the toilet paper was out on DoGzilla as everyones butt cheeks were probably puckered w/ fear of speed ;) I wonder if onboard they are going so fast that everything goes silent as they see the black hole slowly appearing on the horzion.......lol.

Truly amazing!!! Something better on the Internet than boomer's avatar's amazing bouncing jugs :)

With a double reefed main and about 8-10kts true, we got left. Granted we were in a small boat that was under powered, but I would say we were doing 18-20 kts and this thing left us behind.

The really scary part was after we turned and headed home, I looked back to see this thing out about 3-4 miles away and then it turned and came back and got close enough that I could see the Oracle logo on the sail again. These guys could have easily passed us and beat us back to the dock and into the third or fourth round before we made it to the bar.

Regarding the first sail...

WL will correct me if I am wrong but...

When they cut her loose, true wind speed was about 10 knots. She unfurled her jib to bear away, and then powered up. As she got moving, they pulled the jib back in. We throttled to catch up. The chase boat was doing about 22 knots. The DoG boat was running away from us under DOUBLE REEFED MAIN ONLY.

They should help the perspective.

I am trying to remix the video with the original audio, its hilarious.

SA coverage from planes, boats & land so the only think left is for BMWO Racing to read our threads & give you guys a ride after you sign off on DoGzilla waivers for death by speed on the water.

Ed needs to pony up some coin for a rental from the pro vid shop. A broadcast/HD cam, 200mm lens and a steadicam rig should do it.... And batteries - lots of batteries.... Day rate shouldn't be too bad but the deposit will be steep. Just don't tell them you are taking it on the water....
