      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Day 1 - Put Up Or Shut Up

Recommended Posts

After a week of running around Eastport making everything as perfect on the world's fastest Melges 24s and a week of drunken nights at the few bars available over here, it's time for everyone to get off their asses and go racing. The forecast here in Annapolis is a good one - so long as you're an eskimo. Temps in the 40s (that's 5-10 degrees C), winds in the high teens and low 20s - at least the racing will be exciting, though I'm damned glad not to be out there racing.

Our ride is a lot more comfortable. We've got Tom Weaver's awesome luxury workboat - the Eastport 32 - and it's so good for our purposes that we're already trying to figure out how to bribe Tom to get the boat down to Key West in just a few months. Tom also has a lot of stories to share with the Anarchists when we have time - I'm looking forward to hearing about his time as manager of Mescalzone Latino's Cup campaign, his time sailing with Fossett on Playstation, and what must be hundreds more stories.

In the meantime, we get to bring you the original On-The-Water report, filled with the best video, pictures, and commentary, along with the back stories from the class. As always, we encourage y'all to let us know what you want to see - photos of your friends, the conditions on the course - whatever. This is your report, not ours - so feel free to help us make it as good as we can for you.

It seems that OTW Anarchy has spawned something of a cottage industry of copycats. Not only are there a couple of other dopey websites with pretenders and wannabes trying their own live reports, but it seems the International Melges 24 Class hasn't learned from the mistakes of Key West Race Week and the Mumm 30 class, and is trying to get into the OTW business themselves instead of sticking to the business of running the class. The class has actually flown an extra press officer from the UK to this event specifically to do some weak-ass version of what we've been doing for almost three years now. If that's not enough, they're still too cheap to hire a real racing photographer - even US Class secretary Joy Dunigan shoots significantly better stuff than official class photographer Paul Todd (not to mention the even-better stuff from our own Meredith, which is posted to thousands of you within minutes of live), but somehow, despite the clear lack of quality in his work, they just keep bringing him to these events. I'm not sure how they justify the extra thousands of dollars of expenses to their dues paying members - unless they just pass these costs off to their sponsors, who don't know any better...

Enough about the silly antics of Fiona Brown and the IMCA - we always give credit where it's due, and the Eastport Yacht Club has done an impressive job of organizing, launching, measuring, and registering every boat and team here in town. When not a single competitor bitches about the measurement process, you know they're (being our pal Billy Blank, Chief Measurer) doing a good job, and Liz Filter kept the cars, trailers, and tractors running like an assembly line, with the end result being lines of neatly ordered Melgi tied stern-to the docks, ready to loose their leashes and go hunting. Local PRO Jeff Borland has a good reputation, and we'll see how he holds up tomorrow with a shifty, puffy 20+ knots out there. As the crew of USA 757 tape up batten ends and flake sails in the other room, Mer and I will try to get some sleep, so we can bring you the most exciting class in the USA, bar none.

Don't forget to thank our advertisers for supporting this great report:

Latis Yachting Solutions - the reliable yacht transport and logistics company that offers you licensed, bonded, and fully insured delivery of your racing boat - anywhere, anytime. Customers like Pegasus Racing and Melges Performance Sailboats know that it doesn't pay to hire some uninsured Joe the Plumber to deliver their boats for a buck a mile - in the long run, it doesn't cost much more to have the piece of mind of a professional, with the coverage and permitting necessary when moving your valuable racing yacht from point A to point B.

Coral Reef Sailing Apparel - One of the most successful sailing apparel companies in the US - for event apparel, private gear, or the best customized team equipment, CRSA is the one to call.

The Eastport 32 - You'll see yourself just how sweet this boat is. If you're in the market for a powerboat for fishing, Race Committee work, taking the grandkids out for a spin, watching Opti races, or just about any other thing, this "luxury workboat" is just awesome.

Thanks, and let the games begin.

Anarchist Slowpat may be a bit mentally challenged, but he's posted some good video elsewhere in this forum. He and someone called Chris Love, who seems to be some kind of gay rock singer, are shooting their own videos of the event. This is the kind of wannabe shit I'm talking about, but we can't really complain - after all, it's all about how many of YOU get to watch some piece of the racing, and how much of it you can see - regardless of the source. We'll see if Love gets any better over the week - what's that line about a blind squirrel?

Here's a short interview with Mark Strube, one of the Brick House's programs studs, and a very cool bro.

Here's our ride for the next few days - I can honestly tell you that it is EXACTLY what we've been looking for in a motor yacht for what we do, which is spend a LOT of time on the water watching sailboats, fishing, and just screwing around. Watch the video for a good tour of what I call a "luxury workboat" - The Eastport 32.

So like Mr. Clean was saying, you can check out all the videos, interviews, and footage from the M24 NA's right here, the best sailing site on the planet. hell everyone knows that - even a dodo like me!

Thanks for the encouraging words MR. CLEAN. Haha. Seriously the Chris Love reference was amazing.

So like Mr. Clean was saying, you can check out all the videos, interviews, and footage from the M24 NA's at www.sailgroove.org

Let me just correct you - and for the last time. You can't "check out all the videos, interviews, and footage from the M24 NAs at..." whatever your website is. You can check out some small portion of that information at your site, while you can check out pretty much everything right here, without going to click on some social networking sailing site. Understand the difference?

Clean, please drop the "Coverage Hater" tone in some of the coverage. You sound too much like McCain.

So, munch on your Eastport Deli Bacon Egg and Cheese, and enjoy the ride in Tom's sweet Eastport 32.

Any coverage is good coverage. You sound like Jobson dissing Tucker in the early days.

I agree. So much hate on "social networking" for someone with a link to facebook in all their posts.

The Sailgroove site seems to serve a different purpose than SA and its pretty legit that they have focused on college sailing. Until now there really hasn't been any video or photos of college racing.

Also, from a programming standpoint Sailgroove is really well done. Not a typical cookie cutter site.

Thanks for all the constructive criticism - especially you, Solo.

We're doing our thing now, rolling out in 18 knots of pure, heavy, mid-atlantic air. Tom just called a 20+ knot gust - it is just about as perfect as you can get, if you don't mind the fucking cold.

Mick - give me your name, I'll tell Tom you say hello.

Welcome, Anarchists, and thanks for playing. Got some nice vid of Sweaty Betty ripping out to the course - gonna upload it in a sec.

Gotta have fun with Jobson's crap. The video he showed was actually decent - some good old Whitbread footage and that sort of thing, and some good crash video. The music, though, was hilarious. First, the 80s Porn Rock:

Then, the theme from Monday Night Football

Borland "Let's be good boys and girls - we'll get a race off and under our belts." HAHAHA. I vote that this will be a gen recall.

Here's all we can get you from the registration list: http://www.annapolismelges24.com/m24NAsWhosComing.asp

Shane, Kyle, and Hoey are a late entry and will be out there. Look for the fro and the walker in the cockpit.

Joe Fly looks launched on the left - with WTF hanging with them. That side got a nice shift and have all tacked over now. Kristen Lane reached off the line with almost no main tension, running through the large fleet of spectator, VIP, and photo boats. At least we weren't the only ones to get yelled at. Tom was shouting "pull your main on!"

Videos are loading now! And pics too. Hanging out at the top mark which is way the fuck inshore - we are less than a quarter mile off the beach, and the geography may play a part on the laylines here.

Sweet! FANTASTIC! Thanks for enduring the cold.

Here's the first start - General recall.

Unduring what cold? Have you seen the ride he's in, probably has the heat on.

Watching the real start it always amazes me how fast those races are over. Front row or "suck it Trebek."

We do have the heat on! It's fuckking toasty in here.

Ullman leads at the top mark, and is extending like mad. Reeser in 2nd, Quantum in third, the big surprise is Chris Hamilton in 5th - just ahead of Simplicity with Simon STrauss. Barbarian and Throttle back in Tenth and 11th, Chris Larson just ahead.

Man that was fun! Ullman by ages at the bottom mark. Monsoon in 2nd, Terry in third, Blu Moon gets knocked down at the drop, in Fourth, Mfatic in fifth, Joe fly tries to go upwind without a headsail but Full Throttle hits the mark as they try to roll 'em - Simplicity just ahead of WTF - all good! Vids comin!

Nice offer! I bet the boat'll be full tomorrow. If I could get Friday off though, I'd be doing the IRC regatta.

So Blu Moon pulls something out of their hat on that upwind and gets there just a dozen or two boatlengths behind Ullman, with an incredibly tight pack just behind. Quantum ducks four boats on the port tack layline, tacks behind just ahead of Full Throttle. It is some battle here! Anyone know who "misfitz" is? They must have passed a dozen boats on that upwind, and they rounded in third or fourth.

Sorry we don't have better info - the class never came up with a scratch sheet, unfortunately - so we're working from an outdated registration list with no bow numbers.

Go Chuck-E, Bisssman and the rest of the Stu-crew!

Who is sailing with which Lane? Is Kotoun and Chuck on one of those boats?

I think Kotoun and Ivey are with Peter - Kristin is still kicking their asses!

Here's that top mark - after the big rightie came through.

Full THrottle, Blu Moon, MFatic all hanging out here at the pin.

Vapor Trail retired for the day. That's our old pal Marc Steyn - hopefully they're watching our report.
