I'm on Top Gun (C&C 37R)

Is there a GUNBOAT fleet this year?

Scratch sheets aren't up yet. I only see 3 gunboats on the entry list.

Why do they call it a 'Gun' boat? Does it have guns? If so, how many?

Why do they call it taking a dump, when you are actually leaving a dump?

Logging in

Actually the new GUN BOAT 62NP does. I think it was designed for a guy that wanted to cruise the area north of Madagascar and the Somalis frequent the area at least from what I have heard.

The bar down the end of that beach is a perfect spot to watch the planes come in. Last time I was there, I took the tender out just off that beach directly under the jets landing........pretty fucking cool to watch them come in.

I told Espo I would be game to put together a charter for next year's heineken consisting of both of our crews?

Pitman: Bottom of Non Spinnaker Fleet

The Skye 51 with it's cruising sails tacked like the Queen Mary--and pointed 10 degrees lower that everybody else in our fleet--but it was very nice going upwind in 30 kts of breeze into 10 ft swells. I had a great time--the event is awsome.

I did have a better time than Jordan who raced on the NY Club 42 Arethusa. 15 minutes into the first race they got "T-Boned" by a Beneslow 51.5 bareboat. Got hit just behind the primaries. The boat nearly sank----1million $ for a NYYC 42---50k to get the crew down to St Maarten --chartering an Ocean 80' to house the crew---run into by a 50' clueless idiot--PRICELESS!!!

There was a lot of t-boning going on at this regatta, from the sound (look) of things (see pictures of Onyx and Tirion I posted above.

In all honesty, from the pictures I've seen and what I've read on this thread, despite the beautiful conditions, I'd be thinking long and hard before I'd spend the time and money to attend it. Looks like it's a bunch of folks who don't know what the hell they're doing when it comes to the RRS and boat handeling.

Nice!! (asshole)----- there were lots more clueless idiots on those corporate bareboat charters mostly from Europe ----not a lot of American boondoggles left after the banking collapse. There were bareboats with more corporate logos attached than NASCAR racers. Put those guys in a 50 foot clorox bottle with 35 kts of wind and huge seas and you get carnage. Look at the photos and you will see that almost all of the collisions involved one or more of these floating hazards to navigation.

"starting line jitters" perhaps

Lots of "pre race jitters" going on this year. It was clearly the most breeze that 95% of the crews had ever raced in. Mostly everyone was sailing with reefed mains and tiny jibs--Downwind, the seas were very confused and BIG--tough conditions for the best of them.

Pitman,

Espo's not going to be too happy......all that money spent on 3 days of racing in a foreign land, sailing non-spinnaker??

You could have bought 2 new sails for Hustler!! LOL.

Just kiddin' buddy, Heineken is well worth it. Lets think about doing a charter or something next year.

The bareboats are mostly on their own courses we only saw them on the round the island. To be honest as boat captain that was enough for my nerves. The only other place to deal with them is in the bridge queue in and out of simpson bay but not all of them dock most anchor out. I love the regatta personally I think it is better value for money and is better sailing than Key West. Just my opinion though.

The conditions were very like bay racing but warm so my charter group which came in from the bay did just fine and sailed the boat really well. Only a little bit of sail damage.

My friends were on that boat -- they are all very good sailors out of Annapolis who chartered the boat. For those of you bashing the charter boat sailors as people who don't know what they are doing, just keep in mind that not everyone out there on a charter boat was a complete idiot and that the conditions just might have played a part in some of the carnage.

The good news is that all crew made it safely back to shore and nobody was hurt beyond some bruising. Everything they had with them went down with the boat -- including plane tickets, car keys, phones, you name it. I haven't gotten a lot of details but the short story is that a twelve-foot breaking wave in the channel at Oyster Pond caught them, the boat turtled and came back up with a broken mast. It ended up on the reef and then went down. It had to be a pretty scary experience. The good news, if you can even call it that, is that it happened on the last day and they had a great time up until that last day.

p.s. -- Flagg -- can you please post the link? Apparently the article said that my friend drove the boat onto the reef. That is complete and utter B.S.

Actually they were concerned about bringing the boat in the cut, and called the charter company for advice. Charter company told them it was not a problem and just hug the right side of the channel. Perhaps not the best of advice at the time. Apparently there is a better approach from the north which they found out about after the fact, would have been nice if the charter company had suggested that route.

http://www.thedailyherald.com/news/daily/l249/sinksl249.html

Story misses a lot of the facts. They did not drive the boat onto the reef, they were in the channel when a very large breaking wave caught their quarter, the boat rolled turtle and since the channel is not that deep (I assume) they stuck the mast and broke it. Boat almost took a full minute to roll back upright because the mast was stuck. Boat was still in the channel and heading to the reef with no engine when the charter company sent a dinghy out to them, they got all crew off the boat, charter guy got on board, determined that he was not able to start the engine and decided that it was best and safest to let the boat go onto the reef. Crew and charter guy were on the dinghy and brought safely to shore while the boat eventually drifted onto the reef and sunk. Minor injuries to some of the crew, bruising, shoulder injury, facial laceration that required sutures, etc.

Pitman is a charity?

No--I give to the charity--the Hustler sail fund for example--gotta keep Espo in new sails--or he will cry.

The bareboat charter fleet sailed on the same course as the non-spinnaker boats--so I got to see them in action. There were a lot of them--some sailed very well--but many were absolutely dangerous in thet heavy stuff.

Why would anyone try to come into that channel in 30 kts of breeze--and breaking waves?? I wouldn't want to try it on a calm day! I'm glad that everyone is safe--but what were they thinking?? The waves were breaking on the beach at Mullet Bay--in the lee of the island!! Over by Oyster Pond there were 12' swells all weekend!!

This happened on Monday afternoon, my understanding is that the winds were a lot less than 30 knots on Monday when they were approaching. Also, as I said, they were concerned about the approach because of the size of the waves, so called the charter company. The charter company told them it was not a problem and just hug the right side of the channel. So they were thinking that they didn't want to make the approach in those conditions, but the charter company convinced them it was all OK.
