      Abbreviated rules   07/28/2017

Underdawg did an excellent job of explaining the rules.  Here's the simplified version: Don't insinuate Pedo.  Warning and or timeout for a first offense.  PermaFlick for any subsequent offenses Don't out members.  See above for penalties.  Caveat:  if you have ever used your own real name or personal information here on the forums since, like, ever - it doesn't count and you are fair game. If you see spam posts, report it to the mods.  We do not hang out in every thread 24/7 If you see any of the above, report it to the mods by hitting the Report button in the offending post.   We do not take action for foul language, off-subject content, or abusive behavior unless it escalates to persistent stalking.  There may be times that we might warn someone or flick someone for something particularly egregious.  There is no standard, we will know it when we see it.  If you continually report things that do not fall into rules #1 or 2 above, you may very well get a timeout yourself for annoying the Mods with repeated whining.  Use your best judgement. Warnings, timeouts, suspensions and flicks are arbitrary and capricious.  Deal with it.  Welcome to anarchy.   If you are a newbie, there are unwritten rules to adhere to.  They will be explained to you soon enough.

Our webcast today is largely made possible not only by our sponsors, but also by SA'er "Kanaka" who put us in touch with the right people, by the South Carolina Maritime Foundation, who lent us a big zoom for the camcorder, and by the City of Stevenson, WA, who's lending us the bandwidth that we could never get from Cascade Locks.

AP was just dropped, as have our helpful friends at the Stevenson Port Authority, who are stuck in a meeting about new top secret security clearances or something. But we are on station across the river from the event site, with all our cameras and shit set up, and waiting for the action to start. So there will be a short delay in our coverage, assuming they get a start off at all. Wind is at 16-18 with much higher gusts. One just blew my hat off.

We finally have our big pipe, now to get the rest of the shit working. Not easy.

Scott B wins, Bora just behind. Dunno where Nathan finished, too far away. Haters, fuck off and please don't come back. We're trying.

Your On-the-Water (from land) setup sounds like more pressure than working over real estate developers in a Detroit law firm office.

At least you have the Gorge scenery around you!

I'm looking forward to seeing the live action, or recorded video and pics as they get uploaded.

I like the vibe of this version of SA OTW. Keep up the good work.

The new vid looks great in full zoom. If you have a VHF, maybe someone on the water can identify which boats are where and transmit the audio to you.

YouTube is taking its sweet ass time on processing the vids linked above, so just give them a little time. They're there.

Boats still finishing - unbelievable the distance between the front and back of the fleet. Judging from the text feed, we're in the wrong place, but we had to try it....

Mer got picked up from the beach here and will be back after the final race to load pics - that will happen fast too. I'll tell you this much; if we had this connection at the other shore, this would easily be the most memorable live coverage of a dinghy event ever. Water under the bridge (of the gods - just down the river).

Tell you one thing - how about a 1.5 mile leg W/L race that takes 8 minutes to get to the top mark? That's pretty sick.

We've never been secretive about what we do or how we do it, but here are a few words for those of you that are interested by the whole OTW idea.

This is some rapid-fire racing, something we were certainly not ready for. You know how sailing a Farr 40 in some one-design action seems so fast and action-packed at first, until you sail a Melges 24. Then the bigger boat seems slow and easy to anticipate. Then you move to a 470 or 5O5, and the Melges racing all of a sudden seems to take so long, maneuvers seemingly endless. Then you move to a 9er, and once again, the bar gets faster.

It's the same for us when we cover races. We seem so busy and crazy and full-on when we're on a 40' sportfisher covering 50' boats. Yet compare this to that - instead of 2 hour long races you have 20 minute long races. Instead of 20 minutes of down time between races, you have 6 minutes. And the day is over almost before you can blink. The sailors put their boats away and get back to their campside or house, everything is small and happens quickly, and we're just trying to adapt.

I still have to look at the videos (I have not yet seen one), but to me, this was definitely a cool vantage point, but just too far away. If we could have run the Justin.TV thing and worked fully live, it would have definitely been cooler, but I don't know if it would have overcome the distance problem. Meanwhile, across the river, we are on top of the action, with lots of fans and interested spectators to keep it lively, yet we do not have the capability to load any kind of real data, and cannot even shoot in HD because nowhere in town can I upload even a single 250 MB file in less than a few hours. And today, I uploaded a whole pile of them in just minutes.

Compromises and trial-and-error, that's what we're doing. Between our wacky ideas, your good and bad ones, and the support of the SAers, the Ed, our trusting and sometimes brave sponsors, and the organizers of progressive-thinking events, it just keeps getting more interesting.

And your appreciation of this coverage has given the event and its forward-thinking organizers a huge bump in traffic and interest, just we'd hoped. It's so incredibly cool to be able to look at the folks who say "no one is really interested in watching this live," and just smile.

So thanks again, a million times, and thanks to all the mothies for keeping this so interesting. Now where are those fucking results? :)

Bora and Nathan cannot be sailing every boat! Also more people than Amac have a KA sail!

In his defense (of which I do not quickly jump!), he is looking from 2 miles away through a 2 inch screen too.

So I was thinking, to really do live video right the cameras really need to be on shore (the sailgroove footage is so shakey its useless.. the only way to get decent on the water footage to be right next to what you're filming) , and they need to be HD with monster telephoto lenses. And you need about four of them, where each has a different assignment- follow the lead group, stay on the windward mark, etc. Then you need to pipe the footage from each camera to someone who can toggle back and forth betwee the streams for the best shot at the moment, and last you need someone watching the final output footage and commenting.

So, can SA get that together for tomorrow please?!

Cheers Phil, and apologies to Funk and Rohan and whomever the hell else I pronounced wrong. It ain't easy believe me! News: Simon's knee is fucked up pretty bad, but he'll sail tomorrow if he is physically able to do so. Blown out cartilage and some ligament damage, interview coming after we go and get drunk. He is still ahead of Rohan, so that's his motivation.

Good news though - tomorrow we will be back on the Oregon side, shooting with the ever growing crowd at our back, and it should be stellar. We will NOT be posting video during the racing - we will post commentary and maybe a twitter pic or two, but our friends at the City of Stevenson and Saw.net are letting us come and use their T-1 to upload everything over there the minute racing is over. Considering that the racing is only two hours for three races, that means that you'll have great video and pics very soon after racing, and hopefully you'll enjoy it.

Interviews will load over the next few hours, got the lovely and fast Lindsay Bergan, Simon with his injury, Nathan, Rohan, Bora and the boys playing cards, Nige after a great day on the water, and Kevin Hall as mellow as can be. All top shit.

So clean are you going to come to Australia to cover the Belmont worlds in Jan 2011??

If the Class and our sponsors appreciate our coverage enough, then hopefully we'll be at every Worlds from now until whenever. We sure have learned some things about how to properly cover the Moths...

Interesting coverage fact of the day:

The biggest danger from the spectator and media boats is not their wakes. It's the turbulence of their prop wash. The wash keeps the water tumbling for minutes after the RIB or whatever has come through, and that tumbling water can literally just knock people over when a foil hits it and reduces lift catastrophically. Trew has a special prop to cut down the effect, but Sharon's big RIB, nor ours, do. Kind of makes me happy to shoot from shore! Learned this and much more in Hood River last night, where Sharon, Morgan Larson, Tyson, the dude on that Moore 24 on the front page the other day, and a bunch of other ex pro sailor locals got together for drinks. Good times.

How has the Assassin been going? I saw one on top of a car on I-90 in Ohio a couple months back and it looked pretty sweet, very simple and well thought out. I noticed it in one of Mer's pictures (sweet shots btw), and was wondering if any conclusions about the boats performance have been drawn from this week. Thanks!

Hard to say right now, because there have been plenty of gear issues and the boats are so new. The foils have not been great, and that will change very soon with completely new foil design that just didn't make it here on time. We will ask folks on camera for a design summary after the event, to see how they think the boats compare. I know Lindsay was very happy with her Mach 2, as seen in the video above, and they are 4 of the top 5 right now, so that's saying something. I agree that the Assassins look pretty hot - there's almost no boat there at all. Chris Steele said, "when you're low riding the waves just come right over the boat," but you're pretty much never low riding if you're good enough to race these things...
