MR.CLEAN

Italy and USA Battling Hard - Day 3

Recommended Posts

Another insane morning running around like a psychopath. Tried to help shakedown fix their motor hatch which is sticking out a bit. Threw on my tank, jumped under the boat, and pushed as HARD as I could, til they told me they found two more bolts to loosen, so no dice.

3 races on tap today, PERFECT weather, wind 15 knots from NE, and already 22-24 degrees. FINALLY.

Stay tuned.

Wow - it seems like, for the moment, we've got bandwidth. We'll see after Race 1 if we still do, and if so we will start streaming live as well as getting pics up in the middle of the races.

Intensely crowded rounding, yelling like it's a 100 boat fleet, and we're in the middle of it. Luigi on the radio "Let's back off a little, press boats..."

That was interesting - we just found out that the two photographers clogging up our RIB right now are not the RIB owner's sponsor shooters, but just random photogs that YCCS press officer thought she'd stick here because she didn't want to hire another boat. Since we went to great lengths to secure our own RIB, we're just a bit pissed and that was a fun conversation, "You do not have priority, you stay out of our way." Not happy, these two.

Setting up for the next one, rockin 'em out for three today. Waves are starting to lay down a bit...and I'm going in the water to shoot this top mark. Sorry for the delay on getting you video, it'll wait til we get to shore and have our talk show, but they are worth it!

Erm...that was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. ABout 20 feet down, just staying a few feet from the anchor line, waiting, waiting, waiting. The motor boats were first, looking like a school of dolphin collecting around a bait ball, and then the whistling/shrieking of the rigs and foils came. Bashing up and down, when they crashed deep enough you could see the logos and boat names, and even faces at times, I think.

And then I got to the surface and struggled aboard the RIB with my 10 kg of weight belt and tank, and the RC boat was waiting to escort us back to the PRO, who apparently was very unhappy with us. I was sure I spoke to Peter about this, I know I asked the Race Chairman all about going in the water and told them my plans, and I've been saying it on the site for weeks, but maybe he's got a bit on and forgot? Or maybe it was me that forgot - anyway, we finally had the perfect race to shoot and we did it, and I am just downloading the vids now to check them out.

Anyway, we pulled next to the RC boat with our escort, and Peter grilled me. I apologized and he said "Never again" and that was that. The shot was totally fucking worth it, even if they kicked me out of Porto Cervo. I hope, anyway - let's wait til I see it!

Yep, I'm guilty of swimming about 20 feet under the boats with a 170 degree lens. Now I just have to figure out how to get the file off the salty card...the housing wasn't quite perfect, but I can see the vid and it looks great - just can't post it yet!

Team 93 with a big lead on the regatta, once again Michetti slaying dragons out here, and Jonathan McKee mellowing his way around always moving ahead until there's no more ahead to move.

Downtown asked about Vincenzo last night - it was a lovely dinner, beautiful pasta and chicken and veggies, though Vencenzo has his chef make him 3 huge bone-in steaks - he is "an animal" as he said. He also told me that "he only reads sailing anarchy - he used to read the others, but according to the other magazines, websites, whatever - "every sailor, every boat, are all perfect - and how can that be? I know I am an asshole, so if they are wrong about me they are probably wrong about everyone, so why would I read that?"

He just launches into random story after random story, and Ado Stead and Gerry the main trimmer were just as fucking cool.

At the start a big crowd at the boat end, lumps are not standing down as we'd like, but it is damned gorgeous out here. Final race is off.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Clean,

I just finished watching your live footage of the panel discussion with some of the luminaries of the Megles 32 regatta. I was the one who asked the 'dumb' questions, like could you list their last names when you ask them questions, and how many days do they sail year (in reference to one of their comments that ISAF should figure pros by number of days sailing).

Somehow Barbara Walters (who periodiically does insert last names into her questions, btw) knows what questions we all want to ask, but that's impossible for most mortals and I really appreciate your opening the floor - chat room - to the viewers to pose questions.

The really cool thing is that I and others can ask questions live while you're interviewing them. Does that ever happen? I mean seriously. I'm sure the critics will raise their hand with some problem or other about it, but I thought it was pretty righteous.

I don't watch too many of the OTW vids anymore b/c they are usually long and unedited (sorry), but this was, in it's Blockish way (I mean you did say "fuckin" in front of the kids), Top Notch.

Good on ya both - and cheers.

Dixie

It'll take a while to get today's racing vids up, we just finished up with the broadcast gear and Mer's hot friend gets to town in a few minutes, so it may be a drunken posting night for vid.

Sorry, but there's plenty of time til the morning.

Are all the boats flying North or are there some other sail makers? If so, who?

Pretty sure they're all North - when Melges Boat Works doubles as a North rep it's hard to bust that crowd up...................

North certainly dominates by numbers, Quantum have won regattas in the US and onesails (ex M24 world champ) have some boats in Italy. Highlife from UK has tactitian from Hyde in UK but I think they are North too.

In fairness to Melges they will certainly propose and offer North but there is no question/resistance if you go for a different brand.

Hey Saildry (and Jake). Videos are loading, really sweet for sure including underwater stuff. Two boats - Fantasticaaa and one other one - have One Sails, and Fantasticaaa's got Onesails owner Daniele De Luca on main trim, and they're way fast. Also given Quantum's success at big US Events (last year's Gold Cup with New Wave and this year's Nats with Lovell), I think North may not have the fastest shapes out there. But it's hard to tell in the sea of blue dots.

This should answer your question about fast 32 sails: http://www.northsailsod.com/class/melges32/melges32.html

Most of the "Players" didn't make it to the west coast to sail in this year's North Americans and Nationals. There's some suspicion that 4-time All American Marty Kullman is actually an OWNER driver on New Wave. Mike Carroll is the owner and some doubt if Marty has been paying his share of the boat and costs to operate. That all being said, Marty only won the Gold Cup and wasn't seen the rest of the year. Quantum has been putting a big effort into their designs as the owner of Quantum now has 2 boats they'll be campaigning in 2010. I think even Clean said the Eckund with North Sails was cursed at the Gold Cup as he had a regatta to organize. Too bad Star isn't at the Worlds as they surely would be a contender.

Meredith-

the quality of your photos has increased ten-fold....it seems you must have gotten a better driver. The first day was frankly "pretty awful"...now you are in the league of Black, Green, Ross, and Wal....wow keep up the good work. As Nerney once told me, "Why would you want to do this? There is no money in it and it is a thankless job." Well, after viewing your latest shots, it is obvious that you are talented, keep shooting and you'll have an SA calendar soon!

PS- make a calendar A-la Sharon Green.....we will buy it!

Ummm, dinner sounded yummy. Thanks for the update. You have to hand it to those guys for doing it with style. I believe they credited their chef a couple of years ago for their success at Key West.

Love the new mast decal they are sporting. It would go perfect if they hoisted their kite with the naked chick on it.

I would be curious what Vincenzo's opinions are on the state of sailing in Italy vs. the rest of Europe and the States.

Keep up the great work.
