What Is It/Where is It?

Recommended Posts

Those with a keen eye will note the long boards strapped to the heli skids. Heli landed a moment later so the guys could go out. The boats on the beach, add to the mystery, don't they? We've got a bitchin SA hat with the your name on it for the first what and where....

It's the First Annual Drag Your Boat Down the Beach Regatta in Baja. Both teams gave up.

First carnage from Neki in Hawaii. I would bet it's a northeast shore as the north shore is calling for the biggest surf.

Don't know but the helo has wide skids attached...like for snow/ice landing. The coastline looks a lot like Calif. in the summer.

Other than that, perhaps a couple of boat owners decided to avoid haul-out costs and spend it on helo rides instead....

Damn...I relly wanted that bitchin' hat.

What - Heat one world tsunami surfing championships. Competitors are just about to be towed in by the Helicopter; water has already drained out from the bay ahead of the wave.

Where - Some where that doesn’t have trees.

Hollister Ranch, just north of Gaviota State Park(down by Santa Barbara) is private property that extends out to Point Conception. It's off limit to surfers, except by boat or an illegal hike. The Ranch

Cojo/Goverments at the Ranch.

Who remembers........clicky time.............

Big Wednesday

Located about 2 miles ESE from the notorious Point Conception nestled behind Government Point is Cojo Anchorage.

Cojo Anchorage is a small bight where boats can find protection from the strong NW winds when attempting to round Pt. Conception and Pt. Arguello.

Note: Don’t try to sneak onto The Ranch property, it’s a real bummer if you get caught. And most who try, get caught!

Government Point

This spot starts to happen during strong winter north swells . Long, right lines peel with juice and are usually well shaped. It breaks from 2ft-12ft but works best at 6ft and up. Medium-low tide offers consistent, down the line juice. A great spot for novice and intermediate surfers from 2ft-4ft.

Cojo Point

Considered by many to be the best summer south swell spot at The Ranch. Long right lines with fast take-offs that peel and tube. Breaks from 2ft-15ft. Starts to pour on the power at 6ft and up. Best at medium-low tide.

What happens if you get caught? tarred and feathered? Chop your nuts off? Guantanamo?

West end of Catalina Island last Sunday after leaving Cat Harbor. Small boat a with single woman lost power, larger boat, Tayana 42 motored over and gave it a tow. When the larger boat got it's prop fouled, neither could clear the island in 30+ knots of wind. Both boats ended up on the beach.

I think it looks like the Channel Islands. my best guess: The cliffs look a little like Bechers Bay at Santa Rosa Island and there are a couple nice breaks around, like East Point a little south. Perhaps the heli is going there? The passage between Santa Rosa and Santa cruz (called the potato patch) is the wildest place I've ever sailed.

Its not Cojo because there is no tank. The cliff is too high for Governments. Its Perkos for those who know the Bixby Ranch.

location : Cojo,Pt Conception, the boats are a Catalina 30 and a coranodo 25

Three questions

1. After all the rain, should not the hills be at least a bit greener?

2. When's the last time somebody heli surfed the ranch?

3. When's the last time a sailboat ended up on the ranch?

Not saying it can't be, just seems odd

The terrain looks like it could be either. No outlying buildings so it is hard to tell. SO much of the So Cal coast and the Islands off shore look like this.

Yeah, thats the ranch.

What you don't see in the picture are the pissed off local surfers who swam out and cut the anchor line on the two boats then chased the helicopter away with shot guns. They don't appreciate visitors up there.

Here's why I think it is just east of Government's Point.

The photograph was taken by Ragtime whose time zone is listed as being in California.

The vegetation and topograhy looks like SoCal coast.

There is very few houses/roads in the background.

The helicopter's rear window is small. that means it is probably an ex US Army OH-58 Kiowa, rather than a civilian Bell 206.

The blades/tail-boom also look longer than usual (but hard to confirm), which is also pointing to it being an OH-58.

These ships are usually only 'retired' to Government organizations in the US (County Sheriffs etc). This rules out New Zealand.

Many of these helicopter's have a storage box on the right side. I don't think they are surfboards.

The skids are standard "high skids and flite-step" configuration. No special skis there.

The alignment of the shadows make it look as if the photographer is facing north, and the cliffs are facing south-east.

The cliff strati rise from the sea at that angle there. They are more North/South further up the coast near Vandenberg.

I have attached a file from Google Earth of the hills to the North of Government's Point.

Compare it to the background of Ragtime's photo.

Howz that ??

I'm going to fxxk-off back to my nooby cave now.

but they specialise in collisions!!!. so...

Hi Virg,

This was the Editor's response to SailinGame after he correctly identified the Farr 25 in a recent contest.

"fucker. too easy but you are dsq'd as this is your first post!"

As you have only 11 posts, I don't think you will get your hat.

"Anarchy' is defined as being something without rules........it seems fairness is gone also.

The long-timers around here dislike noobies so much that they have forgotten that they all had only one post here at sometime.

Why should new people come here ????

Maybe it's because they like the feeling of getting treated like shit. But you don't need to come here for it.

Just go to any big city "Yacht Club" (yeah, including Dago) and you will get a feeling of the "old boys network" shoved-up your nooby arse.

You'll find (amongst a few nice guys), a bunch of elitist pricks that forgot they once didn't know a tiller from a halyard.

So what is this place, Editor?

Something new, something fair, something open, something welcoming ??

Or have you just decided to join the mainstream, and go with the flow, giving out hats to long-time buddies?

It's Point Conception! It's a minor miracle there aren't a dozen more within sight!

It isn't called "The Cape Horn of the Pacific" for no reason.

So, it is an anchorage with a lee shore? A point that sticks out and collects whatever gets abandoned off of Santa Barbara? A tide race around the point that gets unwary skippers in big trouble? Inquiring minds want to know....

It's a good hidey hole up in the lee of pt conception - well sheltered from the usual strong North westerlies - but a bit exposed in a prefrontal southerly
