Unscientific performace measurements & observations

Just for fun, I thought it would be interesting to have a place to post and discuss our less-than-scientific measurements and observations of performance, based on any evidence we can collect. Perhaps we'll start to see patterns emerge. Here's a start:

From the following video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gX2zMmT9rz8

I've taken some screenshots when each boat reached a reference point, and used the video timecode to determine the time difference it took to reach the second reference point.

The times each boat took from reference point A to point B were:

OR = 10.36s

TNZ= 11.04s

difference ~ .68s

Again, this is a less than scientific approach, but may give us something useful when combined with other forms of roughly constructed evidence (or it may be completely useless)

Thoughts?

no more Gennakers/ code zeros?

in the recent videos we have seen all the teams are either sailing downwind and gybing without their gennaker hoisted, or in many cases without it on the boat at all

Are the teams doing this to ease themselves into the San Fran conditions, or have they now worked out that the shorter course makes handling the bigger sail impractical?

Will there be a foiling beachcat class someday?

Any opinions about the following?

Perhaps you have strong feelings against such a class?

Is it realevant to try to sail off the beach with a foiler?

Would such a class require more wind than the average sailor has access to?

Would the class be a box rule or will some builder start a factory class? or change an existing one like say, the carbon 20 nacra?

Will all that carbon and engineering cost so much more than a stock F16 that only wealthy distance racer types that want to win their local race buy one?

Radio Control Multihulls

These are some boats I designed- and produced for a while-they aren't being produced now but were ahead of their time in 2001. Lets see whats going on now in RC Multihulls-like the guy that built an RC Tri with curved main foils and put T-foils on the rudder to fly it-there must be others.....
Note: for an indication of the size of the Flyer 3 look at the picture of the two boats on the dock and notice the man standing in the upper left corner of the picture.

Article: The billionaire and the mechanic

It's just a fluff piece but a fun read anyway.
http://www.marinij.com/sports/ci_7005936

--

Sailing in Marin: The billionaire and the mechanic

Jan Pehrson
Article Launched: 09/26/2007 01:34:40 PM PDT

Golden Gate Yacht Club commodore Norbert Bajurin stands with Larry Ellison, who owns the BMW Oracle America's Cup team that is sponsored by GGYC.

AFTER half a dozen years of trying to win the America's Cup and bring the oldest trophy in sport back to the San Francisco Bay, the gold collar-blue collar partnership of Larry Ellison and Norbert Bajurin - the billionaire and the mechanic - is going strong.

Now into their third America's Cup challenge (they made it to the finals in 2003 and the semifinals in 2007) theirs was a marriage of convenience.

In America's Cup racing, only clubs, not individuals, can challenge. In 2001, Ellison, billionaire CEO of Oracle Corporation and owner of Oracle racing team, wanted to challenge for the America's Cup. Ellison needed a partner.

At that time Larkspur's Bajurin, owner of a radiator repair business in San Francisco's Western Addition, had just taken over as commodore of the Golden Gate Yacht Club. He was shocked when he opened the club's books and discovered $450,000 of debt. Bajurin had inherited a struggling yacht club and he needed a savior.

In an October 2002 article for San Francisco Magazine, writer Julian Guthrie gave the newly-formed partnership the moniker "The Billionaire and The Mechanic."

Guthrie wrote: "In this most unlikely of partnerships, the little club landed a sugar daddy and the corporate chieftain snagged a cheerleader. The prenuptial agreement had perks for both sides. The mechanic turned deal maker steered the club from bankruptcy and onto center stage of the world's most elite nautical show. The technology titan pulled off a quiet coup. He found a way to set the rules, pick the players, run the show, and be a part of the team."

Today, Ellison and Bajurin remain committed and, despite the inevitable overtures from prestigious, affluent organizations like the New York Yacht Club and the St. Francis Yacht Club, the little Golden Gate Yacht Club remains the Oracle team's home port.

"Norbert is one of the most enthusiastic partners we have on the team," Ellison said. "I only wish that I can bring the Cup back to San Francisco for him."

"Larry Ellison is not a quitter," said Bajurin, a Marin resident for 40 years. "As long as he continues in his quest for the Cup, I will be there."

At first glance, the two men seem to have little in common.

Ellison is listed by Forbes Magazine as America's fourth-richest person in 2007 with a net worth of $26 billion. He climbed in ranking and personal wealth from Forbes' previous annual list despite the tens of millions of dollars he poured into his America's Cup campaign - pocket change. His company, Oracle, also posted hefty increases in sales and profits.

Bajurin is still worried about money to pay the bills for his club, his 14-person business, and at home. The Golden Gate Yacht Club is solvent now, thanks to the initiation fees and dues from its new members, the sailors and support staff of Ellison's racing team. But the dozen overseas trips that Bajurin has taken to support the team have been costly, both in time away from his business and more than $100,000 out of his pocket.

"My father says I am nuts," Bajurin said.

Ellison may have a few extra zeros after his bank balance, but the two men have much in common. Like Bajurin, Ellison is a self-made man who feels comfortable at the Golden Gate Yacht Club. The small club with big views of the Golden Gate Bridge was founded in 1939 by mechanics, carpenters and fisherman looking for a down-to-earth place to hang out with regular folks. They established an open membership policy with very reasonable fees.

"Larry has a keen sense of street smarts," said Bajurin. "He is a blue-collar background guy. He came out of the back door of a Chicago apartment and had to work his way through life. His mom gave him up for adoption and his aunt raised him as her son.

As in all relationships, there have been good times and bad times for the partners.

After the 32nd America's Cup racing wrapped in Spain last July, they reacted with dismay as the victorious Swiss team, Alinghi, announced a new protocol for the upcoming 33rd America's Cup.

"It was unacceptable," Bajurin said. "It was like having to run a three-legged horse in a horse race."

Declaring that the Swiss were seeking to impose an unprecedented one-sided set of rules that unfairly benefited themselves, the defender, to the detriment of all other competitors, the Golden Gate Yacht Club filed a lawsuit, and is currently awaiting the next hearing on Oct. 22.

Meanwhile, the team for the Golden Gate Yacht Club's upcoming 33rd challenge is forming under the leadership of legendary Kiwi sailor Russell Coutts. Like Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak in baseball, Coutts is unbeaten in Cup racing, with a 14-0 record.

Now 52, Bajurin doesn't expect to be enjoying his golden years anytime soon, as long as Ellison continues questing after the America's Cup, the holy grail of yachting. But Bajurin has no regrets.

"Bottom line, Larry did me a favor," he said. "He trusted a yacht club, and before the yacht club, he had to trust me. Through the years, things are getting better and better."

--

hello from germany! i visited the famous hangar-7 airplane museum in salzburg (austria) this week. a cool place. but i saw something intresting out of the sailing world as well. two guys with Artemis Racing Jackets and two guys with red bull baseball caps had a meeting in the cafeshop of the red bull airplane museum. after some investigation i found out it was Artemis Racing CEO Paul Cayard with the austrian multihull double olympic champions roman hagara and hans peter steinacher. the austrians run an extreme 40 team in the extreme 40 world series. artemis was one of their competitors in 2011....intresting....does anyone know if they are sailing for artemis now?

Jib sheet fairlead advice

We got a terrible wrap on the jib sheet 1 minute before the start last night. We could have been better at dealing with it but by the time we realized we needed to cut the line to clear it we had burned up over a minute and were near last at the first mark if not last. We made up all but 14 seconds so took second, not bad under the circumstances but it was ugly.

This has never happened before in several seasons of racing but as the lead angle to the winch is about 0 degrees and should be 3 to 8 degrees I think I should do something about it. I need some kind of fairlead to pull the sheet down about 4 inches. The line will be at about 170 degrees instead of 180 so a 10 degree bend. The sheet is 1/2 inch StaSet.

I did some very rough measurement of the added friction from a 10 degree bend at a fairlead and got 3% so not much. Probably means a block is not necessary. The line friction I measured was linear up to 30 degrees where it was about 10% and took a break above that and was about 50% at a 45 degree line bend. Very crude measurement but a measurement nonetheless.

Here is a sketch of my setup and some things I am considering as a fairleads.

Anyone have an opinion or dealt with this kind of setup?

Below is simple but not very elegant.

Below is a standard fairlead but I am afraid it would not be strong enough (no spec)?

Strong enough but hole is only 1/2 inch, same as line so too small.

A block would do the job but is overkill.

Lasers - Applying a Blow Torch

It seems that Bruce Kirby has at last applied a blow torch

Having been through the almost 150 pages of documents presented to the US Federal Court, over a long wet weekend here in the UK, I will not be the least surprised if ISAF decides its needs to back away from its previous position. The 1992 ISAF plaque agreement is so simple even this non-lawyer can understand it. And the 1983 original agreement with the IYRU is too.

It would not be hard to imagine in the next week a direction from ISAF to the ILCA to stop issuing plaques to LP.

If that happens then we are in a new world.

Its been proven many times over that One Design racing does not have to be in the fastest boat, it has to be in a uniform boat, so that the very best sailor emerges from the pack.

We have 200k+ of a 1969 design, so it has critical mass. I sat on Nothe Hill in Weymouth and I saw young Australian Tom Slingsby win Gold.

The best sailor emerged from the pack.

As a Laser sailor I was in awe.

Right now the class needs to move forward, I don't care if its called a Laser or a Torch, if the class insignia is upside down (thanks Torrid)

I just want to go sailing, I want to be able to buy a new boat, buy parts and I want to know that the class is run by honourable people and by builders who pay their design royalties to the guy who designed it.. And yes I want a cheaper legal sail

Am I alone??

Hello,

I'd like to make my X-79 a bit faster. I don't sail any one design races. Just lokal races with the "yardstick" system.

I changed the backstay from wire to dyneema. What eals can I do.

Ideal would be a cheap solution which makes me a lot faster

So for example a carbon rigg would be much to expensiv.

SF Bay AC Spotting

Can we have one thread for any actionable intelligence of ac72 movements on the bay?
This includes webcam sightings, base happenings, inside information - or whatever.
Anything that would help those with the time, equipment, and inclination to photo, video, or just go out and watch.
But minimal chatter otherwise(not mentioning names, you know who you are).

Keeping signal / noise ratio high is a big ask i know - silly perhaps. But it will allow folks to sign up for instant notification from this one thread and not be buried.

This could lead to some good collaboration, perhaps some simultaneous video capture from various vantage points to allow for triangulation, etc.

Now that the "new" B first 35 has been out for a few years I'd love to get people's perspectives on the plus minus of B F 35 vs J109 given my uses above....specifically interested in light air performance (2-7kts) vs other wind ranges since I sail Long Island sound....

Missing from her mooring in Milton Harbor, Rye, on Wednesday morning, May 22nd. Last seen Tuesday evening.

Description: "Bounty" is a 28 foot HBI - black tube with white cabin and single black Suzuki 300 hp engine. Very recognizable (see picture below.) Many here will remember her as mark or safety boat for AYC in various events, including the recent Spring Series. Also used as tender (hence the justification for posting in SA, I guess.)

Coast Guard and Marine Police have been notified. Two searches of the nearby coastline on Wed were unproductive.

If you see Bounty, please notify your local harbor police or CG and me by pm. If seen in Milton Harbor she has probably been recovered and just pm me, please.

.......I've now got 4 HOOTs up and going,,,and have had a wonderful team of talent test-sailing,,practicing,,and racing!....thanks Emma,Freiderick,Andy, and others for your fine efforts and sometimes 'unique' tests you and the HOOTs went through,,I certainly couldn't have managed it on my own.

........Racing,april 20/21 was fun with wind-on,,,unfortunately one illness and a last minute replacement helsman added up to only 3 boats on the line,,,but it was fun to be out!.......learnt that in the20kt range, with chop from current against wind,,there is indeed a chance for driving the bow in,particularly for lighter sailors it seems

.......In the workshop,,I've been having some challenges to get the right 'fit' on the sail's boltropes. The HOOT inventory came with 2 boltrope sails that went up/down reasonably well,,but new boltrope's aremore challenging,,but I've been learning lots!....lesson one was the importance of exact positioning of the 'batten pocket protector' caps on the sail,,,,,but heavy friction continued,,,,eased a fair bit with the addition of a rig pre-bender,,,but it seems there's still more to sort ,,,I'm looking at the boltrope's stitching and checking various boltrope options--never new there was somany choices!

....soon will have a 5th boat on the test-track,in preparation for.........

.....SEATTLE HOOT-NOOD! .......last weekend,,I dropped 2 HOOTs at sandpoint sailing centre for four fine lads to practice on for the regatta,,,which will include two other boats that ChrisMaas, the designer has,,,so with any luck,, we're looking at a 7 boat HOOT-NOOD!

...BobC,,,one of the seattle team,,put a couple of go-pro's on the boats and made a fun video.......really made my day,,too bad about the peice of line over the camera-lens!...sailing was in 8-15kts,,puffy,shifty,,,hence the sheeting ,body changes.......enjoy!

North American PHRF Sportboat Ratings and Rankings

At my club on Lake Champlain in Vermont, we are more likely to have a mixed PHRF sportboat fleet before we ever have any specific model get a one design fleet. However, we have multiple sportboats around, not all of which currently race (unfortunately).

I would like to come up with a list that provides guidance for our PHRF board and anyone else trying to fit sportboats into existing fleets.

Currently, we have the following on our light wind lake, not all with boats racing:

099 - Melges 24 (no more on the lake, but most sportboat time on lake)
102 - Viper 640
111 - Melges 20
??? - J/70
??? - Open 5.70
180 - Open 5.00

Reference keel boats:

099 - J/92s OD
105 - J/92 PHRF
108 - C&C 99 OD
111 - J/29 MHOB
117 - J/29 FROB
117 - J/80 PHRF
120 - J/80 OD

We think the Viper 640 should be at 108 or even 111

The Melges 20 might belong at 114 or 117 or 120.

I have not seen the local J/70 or Open 5.70 race yet.

Where would a VX One, Ultimate 20, or a Rocket 22 go?

I have a new (to me) C&C 37+ and need to replace all 6 sheaves in the boom (inboard and outboard reefing lines and outhaul). All 6 appear to be original (1990). The outhaul was wire and I am replacing it with Dyneema. Each sheave (plastic for the reefing lines and aluminium for the outhaul) is 51 mm od (2 3/8), 13 mm id (1/2) and 16 mm (7/16) wide. The width is the problem, they each have their own channel and I cannot find ones that take a 1/2" pin but are only 7/16" wide.

Bigger Boom for an IOR design

I am in the process of purchasing a 1983 S&S Catalina 38. Through all my research on the boat I keep hearing about their down wind sailing performance and have seen a few articles about extending the boom and installing a bigger main sail to help eleviate weather helm and improve down wind performance. Esentially, balancing the boat. What are your thoughts on this? Keep in mind that I have not sailed this boat yet and may find no issues with it what so ever but, I would like to hear some thoughts on the subject all the same. Also wondering if this will increase the overall performance of the boat?

My skipper and I are just leaving the 29er fleet to enter the 49er fleet, and are both in the need of some new gear for our endeavor. We especially need some new boots, because the ones we were using have worn out already and weren't the greatest things. What are some good skiff boots for a 49er crew? We need a boot that allows to have a "feel" of the boat, because we are always standing on spinnaker halyard when trying to hoist or douse it.

Let this be open season on those who Love and Hate the "New AC"

If Foling and Wing Sails are soooooooo Cool.

"Why has ISAF not tried to get the A-Cats and their "WIng Sails and the Foiling Moth" in the Teleympics??????

Let me burst your bubble. No one Cares except you, "The Sailor". Why???

Because sailing is a Participatory sport. Not one that is Telecentric. Even at the AC Level it is BORING.

Give me "Open Southern OCEAN VOR Footage" That is sailing.

Not LE and RC jacking each other off.

The AC is a Rich Man "DICKFEST" as it always has been and will never be nothing more.

It will never be F1 like because the rules change with every New Champion.

There is no consistiency to Sailing. Looka t Auto Racing and there are RULES that stay constituent to the vehicle raced.

THe AC is a Dinosaur that should have died with FAY/Conner Challenge.

Coastal explorer ipad experiment

Figured (always dangerous) before cruising NW this summer I'd setup and try out computer based nav system.

1). Coastal explorer running on old Lenovo laptop secured at nav station with dc charger, ie 12V
2) GPS redundantly supplied by standard horizon cp300 chartplotter and new vesper marine xb8000 ais transponder, both over USB. I really like the vesper marine.
3) Netgear wireless router mounted under nav station also wired into 12V for ships wireless
4). iPad mounted at helm with ram mount removable connector
5). 12v charger for iPad mounted in nav pod for continuous operation
6). Iteleport remote Desktop app ($49) running on laptop and ipad to remote coastal explorer display and control to laptop over ships wireless. Iteleport worked right "out of the box", a nice surprise.
7). The weak point, a glorified plastic bag for waterproofing. Am considering the life proof waterproof case.

So far on a couple of cruises around the Columbia the system has worked well. Coastal explorer is nice to use and the remoting on the iPad also works well. Downsides at the moment are mechanical. Mainly a clean waterproofing for the iPad. The other issue is you like to grab onto the helm for support sometimes, and the iPad and mount is not something to grab. My ipad power cable is temporary and is simply an apple cable. Should I "institutionalize" the setup I would dress out a more robust solution. I have a backup old Lenovo laptop and for not much $ could have a backup Netgear router programmed and in the locker.

If anyone has any opinions about waterproof ipad cases I would appreciate it.

Bulking up 10mm spectra cored double braid

I'm considering replacing a 12mm double braid polyester genoa halyard for a 535 sq ft (50m2) sail. Currently I get horizontal wrinkles when the halyard is as tight as I can get it on the winch.

The replacement halyard I'd like to use is 10mm. Spectra/dyneema core with polyester braid cover. The boat is a fasting cruising catamaran.

The halyard goes through a Lewmar clutch which is sized for 12-14mm rope.

How easily can I insert a core thickening insert rope to this type of rope construction to bulk up the diameter so the clutch will grab it?
