Not sailing the race course

We had a race around some islands in Gothenburg this weekend.

One boat faild to sail the course as stated in the sailing instructions, probably by mistake.
When we got close enough to tell them that they have faild they first looked a little confused and i suggested that the should not cross the finnishing line.

When they faild to do that I set the protestflag but still hopped that they would tell the RC that they should have DNF as a result.
This did not happen and I proceded to hand in a protest.

In the protest hearing the fact that they faild to sail the proper course was documented by us, a vintnes and them self.
The protest was rejected due to I din not set the protest flag in the correct time and the protest was rejected.

My question is why the RC did not DSQ the boat when it was known that it did not sail the course?
Would it not be there dutie to do that?

Just rather busy here with everything proceeding methodically as it should. The F-22 is not being
pushed into production at great expense, so the final cost per boat will be very reasonable, and
a low entry level price means many are likely to be sold. This means a higher volume, with better
efficiency, both of which will further ensure a low entry level price, and a class racer (F-22R) that
can really generate some numbers.

We now have floats, beams, folding system and rudders ready to go, and it will not be too long
before we have the main hull done. Latest photos below:
they appear to have targeted the 14' weta, 600? sold
and the M23, not an especially popular boat

drawings show dual rudders on both models, so appear to be designed to fly center hull +
but doesn't seem to be enough rocker, dihedral angle to the floats, or volume in the center hull to allow easy tacking -

both boomless without travellers and little design work on downwind sails yet, but the 15 shows a very flat mast-head gennaker

will the M25R furling jib, but no gennaker on drawings, cost more than a basic farrier F22? $50,000???
will the no? furling anything M15R cost $20,000, double the weta?
water-stays on the big boat, none on the little

How about everyone put their opinions, bs, speculations, etc, here, and leave the other forum for those who want to share their grief together--ok?

I'll start off: Navas, your plug for the sfgate story that you happened to opine in was totally self-serving and also gives a distorted view of offshore racing to a generally uninformed public via a almost criminally wreckless media. How 'bout you make sure folks know its just your opinion, huh?

As an example of the media's distortions, now it seems you won a full-crewed Farallones race all by your ownsey. Last I checked, you don't even own a boat.

Wind generators - recommendations?

We're looking at adding a wind generator to our 35-foot cat. Right now we rely on the alternator, a portable backup gas generator, and shorepower to keep the batteries topped off. Needless to say, that's not working real well.

I ran a search of the forums and didn't find anything, so please point me to it if I missed the discussion. At any rate, the Air-X Marine 12V unit is being sold everywhere, and the other equipment I've seen on boats looks to be harder to find in the U.S.

The specs make the Air-X look good -- not too noisy, good output, self regulating, seems to be the whole package. We've got a bank of 4 6V golf cart batteries to keep charged. The only regular draw is a fridge. The next biggest load is the autopilot when underway. After that, there's not much demand. (OK, GPS, radio, Tri-Data set.)

Anyone have experience with the Air-X or other brands?

Does anyone with a 1D35 have a pic of the front of their trailer by chance? (or be willing to measure this piece for me?. The trailer was made by Triad, not sure if they all were or not.
It would suck to get the boat up on the slings only to find out whatever I welded wasn't going to work. If this would be better in the fixit section feel free to move it. Thought I'd get a broader audience here.

I'm planning to sell my boat this summer and buy a Donovan GP26. Will do it as a nearly complete kit boat needing only paint, deck hardware and a rig. Anyone else interested? Doing two or three at once would really save $$$ and have a built in mini-fleet!
They just meet the Chi and Bayview Mac length requirement and with an SI of around 20, greatly exceed that requirement. By next summer (2013) there will probably be four other GP26's in the US, and Charleston 2014 would look pretty good.

Spring Off Soundings 2012

As of May 9, only 79 boats registered, registration closes Thursday May 19. I know a lot of OS Sailors wait to the last minute, but last year there were 120+ and doesn't seem likely we'll get that many.

We're going, but this might be the last one if the class splits stay as they are. Putting the Elliott in with the 105s and 109s gives that class a 45s split, as opposed to being in with the J/29s and J/27s where the splits would be around 21 seconds. On a w/l course, we could probably compete in the 109 class, but on a distance race like this we are always sailing in different wind and current than the longer waterline boats. It'll be "fun" carrying the penalty we earned in C-4 into C-3. Oh well, friends don't let friends race PHRF, right?

It seems like Off Soundings is going through a transition now anyway, for better or for worse. I love this regatta but if they can't figure out how to generate more participation WITHOUT compromising the "off soundings" nature of the race, this is probably the last season.

Hey, at least it's Block Island in the Spring, right?

West Marine Structural Filler

Hit the rocks last weekend and am planning to use West Marine Structural Filler to rebuild the bottom, and bottom front and back corners of the keel.
http://www.westmarine.com/buy/products/11659-marine-structural-filler-quart.html
I'll bang the lead back into shape as much as I can and then cut off anything still sticking out.

Keep in mind that the boat will be hanging from a crane, so I'll be applying it to the bottom of the keel.

Has anyone used this stuff?

Can I apply it to the hanging bottom of the keel, or will it drip off on the ground as I'm applying it?

I've got a large area to cover, so could I mix up the whole 1 quart can and slap it on, or does it set too quickly for that?

For larger missing parts of the keel, is it better to use several layers or can I just put on one large lump and fare it later?

Any other advice?

The mighty Dragon shoved off from Mystic about an hour and half ago, with Rob Windsor and Chris Mueseler on the helm. She is bound for Charleston and the start of the 2012 Atlantic Cup. At the moment she is in Block Island Sound, making almost 9 knots and headed for Mountauk and the open ocean. You can track her progress via AIS on www.marinetrafic.com, at least until she gets a bit further off shore.

After a very cool inagural event last year, the Atlantic Cup is gonna be kick ass this year. The organizers have added a new leg from Charleston to New York. At 620 miles or so, it provides a challenging lead-in for the tactical offshore leg from NYC to Newport and then the in-shore racing in Newport. Dragon managed to snatch a first place last year in the first leg, only to be spanked badly when it came to the inshore racing. Definitely something we plan on fixing for this year, but the bar has been raised very high in 2012. There are eleven boats signed up for the Atlantic Cup so far, and a few more possibilities in the wings. Follow the events leading up to the start at the Atlantic Cup web site. While you are there, don't forget to vote for Dragon in the on-line poll!

With the top boats in the European fleet participating in the events this year, nothing is going to come easy. To get ready, Dragon went in the water two weeks ago and is headed down to Charleston early to provide some warmer weather training opportunities. She is going to be at the City Marina for the next month, so if you are in the neighborhood drop on by.

Hey folks,
I race in the SF bay weekly, and I'm going to start doing some offshore day/weekend stuff so it's time to upgrade from my layers and racing shell.
It seems that the MPX jacket would be the best bet, but I'm wondering if the very high collar get's cumbersome when it's not needed.
I was also looking at the Gill OS1/OS2 stuff too. But it's not gore-tex, and I'm worried I'll be trading it in in a year.

I'm planning on using it for in the bay races too obviously, and I sail 12 months out of the year.

Stitch and Glue Dinghy

I'm planning to make a Turnabout for me and the grandson- I've always wanted to build a boat and this is my chance. Those of you that sailed as a kid in New England back in the day will remember them. For those that don't the boat runs about 10 feet long and is 4-5 feet wide. Has a point at the bow. Made of 1/4 inch plywood (framed and screwed when built but perfect for stitch and glue). I believe designed to be made from a 10 foot sheet.

A friend has the rights to the boat and templates for the five crucial pieces- two bottom pieces, two side pieces and a transom. What he doesn't have is any kind of building jig or plans. Obviously four pieces come together to define the bow, and the transom defines the stern, but I need some intermediate stations.

I have access to a few existing boats and figure I can make templates of the exterior shape without too much difficulty. My question is, can I make an external building jig from these templates, fit the four pieces in, and do the inside of the boat first (boat will easily come out of these jigs- plenty of V shape), or do I need to make the more typical inside shape jigs and fasten and glass the outside of the boat first.

Easier to make external forms, but is it much harder to build a stitch and glue boat doing the inside first? Any thought as to how many jigs I need?

Failure to disclose during a purchase

10 years ago I purchased my Baltic 37. I had a pre purchase survey that found a few cosmetic things, but nothing that would scare a prudent buyer away.

Since then I've discovered that the previous owner sunk the boat, which explains why I've had to re-wire and re-power the damn thing. That all happened a few years ago though, and I suspect that the Statute ofmLimitations has expired on any claims that I might have made in that regard.

However, last weeks insurance survey uncovered a long standing problem in the form of cracks where the forward edge of the keel stub meets the hull. There was an existing repair that: a) wasn't disclosed, and not discovered during the original purchase survey. The repairs are going to run around 4k.
Is there a CA atty on here with experience in these kind of transactions that I can chat with off line?

Volvo Boats In For a Thrashing

Yes, I know, there are ample Volvo threads in "Ocean Racing Anarchy"

But, there are numerous America's Cup sailors involved so it a legitimate subject for here.

If we read the weather forecast correctly, Tony Rae, Ken Read and the rest are in for a rough start - what Sail-World considers "an early battering as the six teams head straight into what could be boat-breaking conditions."

"The weather forecast is for winds of 25 knots just hours after the starting gun fires in Alicante, at 1300 UTC (1400 local). The combination of those winds with a choppy sea state will make it a tough first night on the Volvo Open 70 boats as they begin the 6,500 nautical mile first leg to Cape Town"

Clean has talked his way onto Sanya and will jump off at the appropriate spot! [if not, then he is a late entrant to the race!]

But here is my point.

It is a major decision to go sailing in this race and I would hate to see harm come to anyone.

Yet, with waves sweeping across the deck, cantankerous canting keels and sails thrashing around, a lot can happen.

This will quickly get boring if several boats have gear problems early in the race.

It will be even worse if crew members get damaged.

So I am pretty sure you will join me in wishing everyone involved a safe and exciting race.

P.S. Trae has been involved in every AC regatta since 1987. Now he is in the Volvo. Adam Minoprio is doing the Volvo in the hope of getting into the AC!]

Trimming and Steering with Assymetrical

Hello,

Some background information first. My wife is crewing at 120lb/54kg I'm driving at 180/82kg. We know we should switch but that will need to come a little later. We're both in our late forties and are mostly self taught, no coaching in our history. We've owned our 29er for about a month now and get out sailing on it whenever we get the chance. Upwind and beam reaching are going well. We are getting faster in the tacks and can sail up to around 22mph winds comfortably on those points. It's driving and trimming the spinnaker that we need help with. Up to 10 or so no big problems though we still have lots of room for improvement finding the fastest way down to the mark. We're sailing on an inland lake so we get plenty or puffs and shifts.

I understand steering for balance and work hard every time out to improve though I'm still trying to settle down and steer more smoothly at speed. The biggest concern for me right now is to avoid flogging the chute. When it luffs and fills again hard I'm putting a lot of strain on the crew's arms and reducing her energy reserve quickly.

I suspect since both our heads at this point are too much in the boat when running that we are sailing out of a puff and the failing to head up/sheet in fast enough. The typical scenario is we'll get the boat heated up, head off, make a pretty good run until until we fail to keep the chute full. We get one or more flogs in a row before we get things going again and start the process over. It doesn't happen every time but it does happen too often.

Should we always coordinate trimming in/heading up on this point or is it mostly the helm's job to steer up when the crew senses a pressure drop? On the other side when I try to bear off to steer under the rig should she be sheeting out at the same time?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Any direction on steering, trim and communication is appreciated. Let me know too if there is something else I'm overlooking. I'd love to have a play by play of a good run in shifty air spelling out what each person is doing and when in response to what they are seeing and feeling in the boat and on the surface.

We're determined to get good at this.

Carl Eichenlaub

The National Sailing Hall of Fame will be selecting a class of 10 new inductees over the next several weeks. No doubt there are many qualified sailors nominated. Making the selection of just 10 sailors from the hundreds who deserve such an honor is not easy. No doubt all 10 sailors that are inducted will be worthy. One wonders why only 10 people will be allowed into the Hall this year. It would seem in the early years it might make sense to induct 25 new members for the next few years simply because with more inductees there will be more interest in the Hall of Fame, and with that increased interest would come increased donations so the Hall could actually be built. You can read the nomination process here. Maybe we should lobby the Hall of Fame Board to increase the number of inductees each year.

It is hard to know exactly who has been nominated. It is also unclear what sort of lobbying goes on to get a candidate into the Hall. We all have favorites and no doubt many will be pushing for their favorites to get in. The Ed and I happen to have one favorite, Carl Eichenlaub, who was nominated this year. I know Carl has been nominated because several of Carl’s friends/Cadenza crew asked me to submit the nomination.

There are three categories for which a sailor can be nominated – accomplishment in sailing, technical, or service to the sport. Carl qualifies in all three. He won many regattas in a variety of dinghies, and sailed a series of “Cadenza’s” up and down the west coast. Technically, he built many racing winning boats in classes like the Snipe, Lightning, Star and other one-design classes. In big boats, his building of Doug Peterson’s “Ganbare” and what that did to the shape of IOR is legendary. Plenty of other great IOR boats too – “Forte” and “Swiftsure” come to mind, along with a host of others

But the thing Carl is probably most noted for is his work with the US Sailing Team as the shipwright from 1976-2004. What many will remember of Carl is not all the help he gave US Sailors with their boats, which was often times significant, but it was the help he gave sailors from all countries during an Olympic of Pan Am regatta. Once his obligations to the US team were done for the day, Carl would help anyone who would ask. US Sailing recognized Carl’s contribution to the sport in 2000 by giving him the Herrshoff Trophy, which is the highest honor in the organization.

While Carl has thousands of friends literally around the world, for those who never have had the chance to meet to listen to the Will Rogers of sailing, here is a nice video of Carl talking about Snipes. This Sports Illustrated article from 1965 with a quote from National Sailing Hall of Fame member Lowell North that just has to be read. If you had ever been in Carl’s boatyard, you’ll instantly recognize what the author says about it, and smile knowing that somehow a winning boat came out of a place that was defined by its rather agricultural look.

Many of us think it would be great if Carl were inducted in the National Sailing Hall of Fame this year. But if he doesn’t make it this year, he’ll make it one day soon. In the mean time, add your stories of Carl here. - Peter Huston.

Sealing core around a thru-hull. With what?

I'm about to replace the depth and speed transducers on a J/120 and I have every reason to believe at this point that I will find the core exposed when I remove the old transducers. If not, then lucky me, and on to the next job. If the core is exposed, what/how do I seal it? Epoxy? Some type of very thin epoxy that will "soak" into the balsa? Something totally different? Nothing, and just rely on the sealant on the outside between the thru-hull fitting and the hull?

I'm not dialed in to the inner circle in Hampton Roads.
Is there any talk about starting a sport boat class?
VX, Viper, J70?

The J70 interests me with Fleet 1 in Annapolis and two boats going to FBYC.

I'm probably going to put down a deposit on the J70 for fall delivery unless something else develops in the area.

new non skid claims salopette knee patches

So, skipper Dan put some awesome nonskid down on American Girl's deck this winter, but my foulies are somewhat the worse for wear as a result.

The outer layer of material on the knee area my Atlantis salopette did its job - the gear is still waterproof, but the next time it will tear through for sure, unless I put some kind of patch on it.

I'm planning to use 4200 or 5200, whichever I have handier, to glue something to the knees. I'm not sure what to use as material yet - any suggestions?
