This is from her first post:
"I plan to be leaving to sail solo around the world this time next year. For three years now I have wanted to do this trip, before my brother ever came up with the idea! Even though I did come up with the idea before Zac ever did, it is due somewhat to him that I am actually doing it now."
There's nothing there about setting record for being youngest. Her plan in summer of 2009 was to leave in July 2010 (a reasonable time to leave for a circumnavigation from the west coast of NA). Where did this record BS come from?
Her first solo sail on Wild Eyes was a week before she left port for the circumnavigation.
At some point this went from a kid's dream to some kind of horrific nightmare driven by PR.
Because back in July 2009 she could have left in July 2010, and if successful become either the youngest around non-stop or with stops, as Mike Perham's birthday is in March and Jesse Martin was 18 when he finished. What changed the game was the late awareness of Jessica Watson's plan to circumnavigate. They should have been aware earlier (Jessica made comment in her early blogs that indicated she had contacted Zac or his family while he was on his trip), but they probably discounted it. So suddenly if Abby was to get sponsors /"wrest back" the crown that Zac had lost, she had to go earlier.

She and her parents can thank god she is alive but it wasnt god who sent the Aussies and the French.
So now because she was rescued it okay to say the thing I got banned for?
That her parents said that she was totally safe in the hands of their make-believe creature in the sky. But then, when she got in trouble, it's only if enough of us beg and plead with their creature in the sky that he will save her?
Why did my observation of those facts result in a 2-day restriction of further speech?

Developing Plans
A lot has happend since i last wrote and I'm hoping to be writing moreregularly now that things are begining to get moving.
Last week I went with my dad and a friend to look at an Open 40. The one thatwe looked at won't work for the trip but there is another one that we're lookinginto. Open 40's are designed for single handing around the world solo. Theaverage speed is 10-15 knots,....

I think AMSA had a plane flying "top cover". Ie. taking photos and doing radio relay work.

I guess that's why they wrote this on her blog
"Their professionalism and the great value that they placed on Abby's life has been a gift to us that we can never repay."

She and her family should be ashamed that they have cost the taxpayer hundreds of thousands of dollars, risked lives, and at the end of the day for WHAT? Abby was CLEARLY unprepared and unwilling to get her self out of this situation and instead decided to call for help and forgo any personal attempt to rectify the situation. Crap!

Not one single negative (or even neutral) comment!
None.
Amazing.
Did notice that there's now a one sentence 'heartfelt thanks' note from dad, along with an entire paragraph thanking his congressman. Really?
those of us that have been following this thread and her site from the time she left MDR have been well aware of this , infact it's almost become a game as to who can get a comment posted on her site with the most CONSTRUCTIVE criticism included!!! It has happened on a few occasions , when either the folks at team ABBY have dropped the ball or the poster includes enough " In God we trust" or "I'll be praying for Abby 24/7 till she's home" sentiments, Include a few of these and ya never no, you to could be on the blog!!!http://forums.sailinganarchy.com/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif http://forums.sailinganarchy.com/public/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif

I am pro-Abby -- I think the girl's got guts. Although, I'm not happy with the team that comes along with her.
I am also pro-integrity, honesty and responsibility. So even though I was just going lurk, at this point I can actually add value, so putting these snap shots out there, because truth and history should not be deleted...it screws with the learning and growth process.
For all posterity:
6-12-10 blog post and save wild eyes campaign (although FYI, I still see this posted on her blog at this point):

Also, I want to state that the team *has* allowed some NOT-100-percent-positive statements to be posted in response to her blog post. I know this, as my post was accepted:
Abby,
I am soo soooooooo glad you are safe!
I have been following you since the beginning and believe that you are brave, skilled, feisty and intelligent.
I think it is fabulous that you set this as your goal and went after it.
That said (and now that you are safe), I am also a realist and believe in seeking the advice of those who have gone before. These people have consistently said that no one sails the Indian Ocean in the winter. You just don't do it. You know in your heart of hearts that to go against insurmountable odds and to have tried to tackle it, was not the way to go.
You have the intelligence, tenacity, bravery, the sailing skills, and now the experience to try a second trip. And with the right prep -- I hope you do!!
Add to the list of wonderful characteristics that you already have and admit that the timing of the the attempt was off and that next time you will prep better.
By admitting your mistakes you will only gain admiration for your maturity as person. Anyone who tells you differently is not looking out for your best interest -- as is anyone who will tell you to not heed sage, consistent advice of those who have gone before.
The whole point of life is to live the adventure of the journey to deepest level you can. Push the envelope-- take that second trip out there; Deepen your personal growth-- admit mistakes, learn from them, and go again...
And above all --listen to YOUR gut instincts: you are phenomenal Abby, and that is something to trust and listen to.

Well done. Discard those critics who maintain that Winter is when all the storms occur in the Southern oceans. What do they know..... besides, all they refer to is centuries of history. That does nothing about predicting the situation you found yourself in. The ocean is a cruel place, and, as any round the world sailor knows, is much crueler the younger you are. That is a well known fact. As for the critics who say you should pay for the SAR...again they know not of what they speak. Australia, with all that uranium and coal, has so much extra money, they are just dying to give it away, and I can think of no better use for it than to do what they did. Good luck for the future. This is a link to a blog site that seems to be a mouthpiece for the Sunderlands. It reports that the captain of the fishing boat did indeed fall into the water during the rescue - but there doesn't seem to be any mention of this on Abby's website and indeed no recognition of what this fishing boat did for her.

When you read the story the link takes you to, it was the skipper of the RIB that went into the water. In the US, if you are the skipper of any boat you call yourself (and so does everyone else) captain.

I haven't done a round the world but I race professionally, have over 100k miles under my belt that includes several trans-Atlantic crossings & races/record attempts. Sailing this time of year in the Indian ocean is just simply asking for really big trouble, please inform me if there is a top solo professional that says differently! I would gladly eat crow.
I'm very curious what makes Mr. Sunderland such an expert and so knowledgeable in solo sailing that he can instruct his daughter to do things that the best in world would never attempt on there own free will?
To me this could be described as a family training there teen age daughter skills to climb Mt. Everest solo and then telling her to do her solo attempt to climb Everest during the winter season. Who's at fault? I wouldn't think it would be the daughter but surely the parents (the adults), the daughter is only doing what her parents advised, isn't that what children are suppose to do, to do what they there parents say?
