Add in the adventure ballooning, the record label etc etc
I have it on first hand authority from those who know him personally he's a good guy
If you had to make a list of who'd you switch places with he'd be on that list

Ref: Branson, he created a very good airline, wasn't taken seriously by the stuffed shirts of BA and kicked their butts and most of the other transatlantic carriers. Sponsored the F1 World Championship team in his foray into the sport. He's a very smart and cool operator, he understands customer service, he makes the time to do a lap of the aircraft every time he's aboard, not just in business class but through the whole aircraft.

I really don't care if he gave you a blowjob in front of Harrods at noon on Easter Sunday. Just wodering if they still using Virgin sails if he's involved still.

Only one sail still has Virgin logos on it, and that's because it was the only sail that was painted. The rest were stickered. They used it on the test sail just to see how it was holding up; the new Zero came out the next day. There is no more Virgin involvement and unlikely to be any in the future as far as I understand it.

There was a program on cable last week about the last record attempt.
I dont think Sir Richard would like to have a second go. He and the daughter looked a fair bit uncomfortable and concerned with the voilent movement and noise comming from the boat. Most of the paid pros showed little concern and just keep giving it to the beast.
If you happen to catch the program in the future its is well worth a look.

the program was called breaking branson. the bransons brought along a camera guy on the transatlantic record attempt to film it and they put together a hour long show for virgin TV.

I thought that it was pretty cool that Branson authorised the show to be made. A lot of people in his position would let their ego get in the way and ban images of themselves and family being sick, scared and uncomfortable. I saw Holly Branson on a flight out to Antigua. I mentioned the trip and the show to her, funnily enough she wasn't all that impressed that the show aired!

Looks like Billy Mac gave Speedboat the same crappy vinyl that he gave me. My boat name didn't stick very well either.....
bear in mind it was temporarily over wrapped in red as virgin money for a spell
You really think that the name was just covered over?? Come on!
they spent a ton of money making the boat red and did a nice job of it. I am sure that a new SB graphic was put on after the red was taken off. Sometimes they just don't stick.

I remember being on a start line once with Alpha in about 20 knots, they were reaching up and down the pre-start area at about 15 knots trying to pick gaps big enough to fit through, the bow crew crouching down and holding on so they didn't get thrown off.... Croakey on the helm and most of the after guard shared the facial expression of a possum in a spotlight! I've noticed that Ricko almost always starts Wild Oats down at the pin end... perhaps trying to avoid the shit fight? I guess the public liability concerns would be high on the agenda, if one of those 100 footers ran over someone at pace they would be several deaths.

I remember a couple years ago Leopard swiped the deck from one side to the other of a brand new marten 50 at the start of the round the island race! hooked up and ripped out all the stb and both aft staunchions, and also destroyed both wheels and hubs. Was a fucking mess and lucky that all the crew didnt get dragged overboard along with the lifelines as they were all hiking on that side including the owners wife kids etc. Leopard went on with the race and left the marten to sort their shit out! Was the same race lewis hamilton stacked hugo boss into another boat. That start area must of been carnage!
That was well discussed here. I believe the Icap tender stayed on the scene to make sure everyone was ok.
Recall one NYYC Annual regatta where in the prestart we were reaching back and forth trying to stay out of the way of Maximus. Not used to trying to cross a bow that's doing 20+ knots in our 7 ksb. And Speedboat leaving a 3 foot wake with the main blocking out the sun. .

Ok, so do the Bermuda, and race some seagulls and the clock on a rating that isn't that great and possibly miss perfect Atlantic record breaking weather? I know what I'd rather be doing in that boat.

I wonder if Leopard will go for the record even if they dont get perfect weather instead of waiting for the bermuda race. Leopard has that power assisted record because a few years ago they had to go and did not wait for the right system to try to break Mari-cha's record. If the weather doesn't set up right, no reason not to do the bermuda race.
Speedboat cannot break MC's record since MC set their record with manually powered winched (I know, I know they still used stored power for the keel). Speedboat can break its own record for stored power boats

The point is that untill the "stored power record" will be higher than the "manual powered" it is an embarassing record for anyone. Both leopard and speedboat need to get the stored power record faster than MCIV (even if it is a differetn class) to feel accomplished.
Because the fact that Mari Cha IV is 40 feet longer and carried a crew that was something like twice as large has nothing to do with it.
Looking at it from the stern, the thing looks like an aircraft carrier.

MC4 was designed around the fact that it needed to be manually powered. The reason it is a schooner is so that each rig is of a size that is manageable without usign power.Because the fact that Mari Cha IV is 40 feet longer and carried a crew that was something like twice as large has nothing to do with it.
Looking at it from the stern, the thing looks like an aircraft carrier.
Different beast and different record. It is a bit embarrassing that of all the transatlantic records powered monohull is the slowest.

Unfortunately I am not so good with carrying a camera around and only have what is up in my head. And it is pretty sweet up there in my head. I should also say there were a half dozen 12 meters docking up there at the same time we pulled in, just getting in from taking some paying charter customers out. It says something when you forget to mention a bunch of 12 meters because there are so many other tasty treats floating at the dock.

Green Light for ICAP Leopard
100ft British super-maxi given green light for transatlantic record attempt
ICAP Leopard, the 100ft super-maxi racing yacht owned by Helical Bar PLC chief executive Mike Slade, today announced the required weather window for her record attempt has finally arrived. She will leave New York on Saturday 29th May in her bid to become the fastest monohulled sailing vessel ever to cross the Atlantic.
ICAP Leopard's weather router, the internationally renowned Roger "Clouds" Badham, yesterday informed the crew that a suitable weather window will open on Saturday and Chris Sherlock, skipper and boat captain, took the decision to pull the trigger on the record attempt. Throughout the night ICAP Leopard's berth in Newport, Rhode Island has been a hive of activity as final preparations were made, provisions taken onboard and the assembly call was fired out to ICAP Leopard's highly experienced crew of ocean record-breakers.
Amongst the crew currently flying to New York are some familiar faces such as Ericsson 4 crewman Guy Salter, experienced watch leader Mark Thomas and veteran navigator Hugh Agnew, but also several new members of the ICAP Leopard team. This newer contingent includes English bowman Freddie Shanks and Aussie watch leader Anthony "Youngster" Merrington, both fresh from the Green Dragon campaign in the 2008-9 Volvo Ocean Race. Also onboard will be world-renowned ocean racing experts Justin "Juggy" Clougher, Michael Joubert and Guillermo Altadill who have amassed no fewer than 11 Whitbred / Volvo Ocean Races between them. Together they will be sure to add considerably to this already highly accomplished crew.
The benchmark that ICAP Leopard will be aiming for is the outright monohull west to east transatlantic record of 6 days 17 hours and 52 minutes, set by Mari Cha IV in 2003. This means that ICAP Leopard will have to keep up a fearsome pace but navigator Hugh Agnew is confident that they have the weather for it.
Agnew commented: "Everything is looking good at the moment. There is a low pressure system due to develop over Nova Scotia that we are aiming to hook into at the weekend. This would give us a fast start to our record attempt. If all goes to plan we should then have some time in the bank to deal with any high pressure that could get in our way on the approach to the U.K. It looks like it might be a challenging run but we can't wait to get started."
ICAP Leopard will be carrying a GPS tracker during her record attempt, allowing spectators to follow her progress online at www.leopard3.com <http://www.leopard3.com/> .

So how is this not applicable to Speedboat as well?
Speedboat isn't headed home to make money.
speedboat wants to leave in a weather system that will allow it to break the record.
Brown Trout - "Non Ideal" weather huh? That's a big call. I'd take Clouds' advice over Commanders any day. A mate of mine is on board and on his way to NY now. He says their window has the potential for a 4 day crossing. You can't break any records tied to the dock.

So let me get this straight, LEOPARD says they are going to get there in 4 days and SPEEDBOAT has not even gone off of RED light. Someone is going to look pretty stupid.

I've seen the routing for the record, and it's impossible for either Leopard or Speedboat to do it in under 5 days. 5 1/2 days would need almost the perfect storm of conditions. A big part of Speedboat not going now is that her crew is already committed to other events.

Yep, it would be foolish to ignore stan's opinion, but who knows what's really going on? Maybe Stan wants to go and the boat/crew is not ready for some reason? Who is on speedboats crew list? I see Luke Molloy's name on the list for leopard. He was by all reports the best helm on abn2 and did the lions share or driving during their 24 hour record. Surprised he didn't rate a mention in the press release!Isn't Stan Honey with Speedboat? Wouldn't he be in on the routing? I've got to go with Stan with whatever his call is.

4 days? wait a minute...is this leopard going to change its spots and become a trimaran??? as soon as you get your head out of your ass you will see that four days is impossible for a monohull these days, maybe some day in the future flash gordon, but not with these boats.

Brown trout, I was merely repeating what a member of the crew told me. They were told 4 days is a very real possibility. If you are suggesting that Leopard (or any of the 100ft supermaxi's for that matter)are not capable of averaging 25 knots then I think you will find that it is you sir, that has their head in their arse. These boats are quite capable of sitting on 30 plus, which would put them into the 3 day club. When ABN2 broke the 24 hour record, they covered well over 2000 miles in 4 days, and that was just a bunch of scared kids on their first trip to the southern ocean!
you are high. hitting top speeds is one thing, maintaining them is a totally different world. but you wouldn't know that sailing an opti.

Once again you are broadcasting your ignorance. I never mentioned top speeds, I only talked of averages, and most sailors are quite aware that canting keel boats maintain much higher averages than conventional. You insult opti sailors everywhere yet you clearly can't even read. Grow up son, you'll have to do a lot better than that if you are trying to wind me up mate.

Today, at 18h 45m 38s UTC, ICAP Leopard, the 100ft super-maxi racing yacht owned by Helical Bar PLC chief executive Mike Slade, crossed the start line at Ambrose Light to begin her attempt on the 2,925 nautical mile monohull transatlantic speed record. ICAP Leopard will need to cross the finish line at Lizard Point before 12h 37m UTC on Saturday 5th June to break the current record held by Mari Cha IV of 6 days, 17 hours and 52 minutes.
