So far, Dubai and I have a love/hate relationship. Frankly it is far better than I expected, and a magical place in many ways. And then you try to get your Etisalat 3.5G system set up, spend 4 hours on the phone with some of the most polite and useless people ever created and finally, they tell you "you must call back after noon when our system is updated." Meanwhile, you can't actually walk into a physical store and have them sort out whatever mobile issues you have - you can BUY the SIM cards and whatever, but you have to make all changes via SMS with a system of numbers that would confuse the NSA. "So why do you have this advanced system of SMS-only account administration if it is going to take 14 hours to update?" I asked.

I didn't expect an answer, I guess.

Anyways, the good news is that the 3.5G system is about 3 times faster than any internet we have found here yet. The bad news is that I burned through 200$ worth of air time in 8 minutes because the system hadn't updated my plan yet. "Calling back after noon" though.

IF I could explain the 28 hour saga that led to our FINALLY getting the internet we need, you wouldn't believe me.

Suffice to say, our little Internet For Boats setup with a Etisalat 3.5G card and about 600$ worth of bullshit is working about 15 times faster than the internet at the hotel or club. Hallefuckinglulah.

Slalom is tomorrow, interview will be up in the morning, and I understand that one of the RC boats has been commandeered by the powers that be for our OTWA broadcast starting Monday. Tomorrow we'll shoot some slalom action and then do our live Cocktail Hour, and then shoot some opening ceremony before coming back to the hotel to work.

Should be a hoot - especially if the wind gets up and blows this horrid dust out of the air.

I'd guess I'm not the only one to see that Mer has improved her craft yet again. There is a lot more variety and even higher quality in the images you are capturing. The new forum format is really nice. Instant hi-res slide show! It's an awesome upgrade.

Would you allow a request from a dedicated OTWA fan? If there was a separate thread dedicated to identifying each sailor and their boat right off the bat, it will help a lot when watching the rest of the action this week.

You've already captured many of their mugs it seems. Now if you could somehow put names to the faces and their boats and hopefully some background about who they are, it will be a lot easier to identify them later on. Maybe there's a social media way to link in their Facebook profiles or blogs in the thread.

Please bear in mind that not all of your viewers are mothie insiders. Hopefully there will be lots of newcomers to the show.

One final request: do you have the equivalent of a Peelman who can organize links and create sticky-worthy summaries about what's happening, when to tune in, links to video archives etc.? Y'all are too busy - maybe there's a mothie who's stuck at their computer and can pull stuff together for SA.

yep lighter than right at the end. Although it is really awesome sailing at Torbole it is probably better for the fleet to be at Campione, at Torbole it is survival a lot of the time for most.

Ok the race coverage is very Gonzo!! My comment about the great coverage was in respect to the collective coverage, pics, back stories, results and interviews.

As explained in one of the videos, in light conditions the horizontal foils are only 150mm or so under the water. Even a small boat wash on top of a small chop will cause them to cavitate and bring the boat off its foils - not a good look during a world championship. A fix would be to have two camera boats, one near the bottom and one at the top of the course so there was no need to travel the course and create a wake. Even if the boat at the top just called positions as the boats came around it would be better than the hap-hazard commentary we get at the moment.

There is no comparison with the coverage of the 18s on Sydney Harbour, there the camera boat wake would have been lost amongst the general chop of the harbour, particularly as many of the races were in 15~20kn. Also, 18' skiffs are far less affected by chop than a foiler in light air, but even they will avoid tacking or gybing in a wake if they can.

The haze is a real issue but that's the Gulf states.

The overall quality of race coverage is pretty average, the on shore interview are better but why interview the only Assassin driver and leave his boat under cover?

So how is the Skiff coverage funded? The camera work looks pretty professional and the commentators seem to know what they are talking about - most of the time. Are they professional tv people?
It's so much better than the SA coverage and would be good to know why/how.

I think for belmont if we can get hold of the Camera Cat it will help a lot. Also maybe something to help identify the leaders - eg big yellow dot for o'all leader.

So how is the Skiff coverage funded? The camera work looks pretty professional and the commentators seem to know what they are talking about - most of the time. Are they professional tv people?

it is funded by the 18s club but the camera cat is supplied free which helps a lot. No they are definately not pro tv people. There are three on the boat - a guy who does the filming - he also does a little editing before putting it up although it is basically just all done live. There are 2 others on the boat, Killo who is the Aussie voice commentating & also driving the boat plus Mark (english accent) commentating. I think they work well together and betweeen them have a good knowledge of the fleet, the sailors, the courses, the class and sailing in general.
It is easy to think of ways to make the SA coverage better (eg have another boat at the top mark) but if you have to make it better within the constraints of doing it in Dubai, short term & to a budget then suddenly it is not so clear.. what we are getting is a lot, lot better than nothing & I have enjoyed watching it.

Enoying the coverage very much. Especially today with the great finishes and hoping for Amac to fight back. If just the camera would not move all over the place most of the time. I know it is difficult, I know but maybe your good cameraman can train himself more to follow boats or packs of boats as long as possible for him, instead of jumping forth and back and from left to right and back, Sailing is a sport where things are developing only slowly. Give it a try maybe one day and see what the folks are saying.

Anyway, appreciate the ever developing OTWA very much and want to thank all folks who are doing it. Who are responsible and who are sponsoring it. THANKS.

I agree with Manfred's Post, instead of straight away jumping to getting the top 10 mark roundings called out again, could you focuss longer on the boats finishing/rounding the marks. So we can see how people are doing in the rest of the fleet(10-25th) and see how the battles, junior and woman fleet, develop. Otherwise really good coverage today, especially the first start.

You understand it exactly John, so thanks. Live is completely different than anything else, and the things that make the biggest impact on the quality of the coverage (besides cash) are 1) boat and 2) bandwidth. We would love to have another boat at the mark and two or three cams with transmitter packs on the race boats, but that's not happening for this one. For Belmont, I expect it will, plus our main stream will come off the deck of the club I suspect with a great big zoom lens and free beer all day.
