So I thought I'd start a thread about the final boat configs vs training configs & what performance impacts the differences may make.

DogZilla
  • 223'/68M wing
  • 113' amas
  • 90' beam
  • Skin friction gunk dispensing slots are removed (not filled in, they were stuck to the outside of the hull)
  • Shallow curvature C boards rather than the J boards (despite what the OTWA guys said)
  • 10 crew

CheeZilla
  • ~60M/195' mast (anyone got confirmation on the size of the Alinghi mast?)
  • 3DL sails
  • 110' hulls
  • 80' beam (PJM seemed pretty sure of that but have seen 75' & 85' suggested)
  • Straight boards (the ludicrous big curvature S boards are on display in the team base & the shallow S ones are apparently similar failures)
  • 14 crew

CZ freeboard is much bigger, looks nearly double at extreme.
To me CZ seemed to be pitching more in the slop.
CZ has definitely cleaned up a bunch of their bits hanging out in the wind.
DZs bow & bowsprit are looking pretty chunky & relatively draggy to me.

I too noticed the chunky DZ bowsprit and that it was a desegn upgrade.

Remember we were blaming the bowsprit for the loss of the mast in SD. So I think conservative beefing up.

CZ was making big rear wake in the slop, at one point it looked like a powerboat wake, so I still worry about her dragging her ass.

Overall that extra 8 metres plus of mast height has to be a winner in the light stuff.

I was meaning more a relative chunkiness rather than a recent increase for the bowsprit.

I mention this before but when did A5 get rid of their hydraulic main-sheet?

Good thread hoom :)

Its been that way since they've been in Valencia by my understanding.
Presumably there is a single ram inside the boom performing essentially the same function as before.

Ooh, hadn't noticed those transparent fairings under tramp on the diagonal braces before.

Kind of surprised they don't have a something for an endplate on the Main. Wide boom, shelf, something to stop the vortex shedding at the bottom.

Thanks. Seems like they have fairings everywhere now on the platform. Good detail for the small bits.

Yeah, both batwings have their ends sealed off now too.

When I see pics like this I can't help but be reminded of something...

Any rumours on what the tarp was covering. Now that the batwings are back on the area is covered anyway.

New high tech satellite dishes that link directly to the base, like these.

I was thinking earlier, say the 15th century and Leonardo da Vinci.

Nope, DZ is faster than both of them. Try again. B)

After all the pics, I don' think the tarp was covering anything of significance.

DZ's bows may have something to do with that. Instead of riding up and down the waves, they punch through the waves. A5 has similar bows, but the hulls have a lot more volume up front and would produce a lot more buoyancy immediately after penetrating a wave. The pitching moment as the buoyancy increased would be lower for DZ than A5 and she should therefore ride more smoothly.

The more pronounced rocker on Alinghi should be at least part of that too.

Sail world shows Alinghi has switched back to the shallow S foils, seems the straight ones are better in light, shallow S in stronger wind.

I wonder if DZ might have similar switchover between their shallow C & the J boards?
