This is THE BEST pitcher of margaritas you will ever have.  I am bribed by my friends to make it for them at parties.

 

1.  Simple syrup

3/4 or 1 cup of regular sugar added to 1 cup of boiling water - stir until disolved and set aside to cool.  Vary the sugar depending on how sweet you want it to be.  I prefer 3/4 cup, its still plenty sweet.

 

2.  Lime Juice

Juice fresh limes to make 1 cup of lime juice.  Some pulp is desirable.  DO NOT USE store bought lime juice.  If you even think about doing so, choke yourself.

 

3.  Combine simple syrup with lime juice in a suitable pitcher

 

4.  Add 1 cup high quality tequila as desired.  It doesn't have to be huge $$ tequilla, just don't use rot gut crap.

 

5.  Add 1/2 cup Triple sec

 

6.  Add 1/2 cup Cointreau or Grand Marnier (whichever you prefer.  I like Cointreau the best, but both work equally well)

 

7.  Stir pitcher and then put in refridgerator to chill (sugar water may still be warm). 

 

8.  Serve over ice.  Salt rims if desired. 

 

These 'Ritas will blow.you.away!

 

 

Sounds good, but somewhat sweet.  I think I would like this if it was hot, but not scorching.

 

Wait till a really hot, scorching day, and try the margaritas recipe I posted.  That sour, salty taste is incredibly refreshing when it is really hot out.

Jeff would probably like this one. it's based on a joke, but there is a real cocktail version of it which is perfect for sailing because it uses saltwater / ocean water.

First the joke, a Bin Laden cocktail, mix two shots with a splash of saltwater.

Now the real cocktail, it's called a Zouk Machine, helpful on a boat when you want to give the illusion of conserving drinking water.

- 1 part rum
- 1 part coconut milk (the canned kind, not the soymilk kind)
- 1 part ocean water
- moisten rim of glass and dip in sugar, (similar to salting the rim of a margarita glass.)

VERY tasty. Since you use canned coconut milk, the seawater gives the drink a freshness if you don't have fresh fruit or fresh juice.

My fave! I just don't get to drink them often enough. A bottle of GG in Canada is 60.00. Three times the price of middle shelf Vodkas. I do treat myself every once in awhile.

Herbsaint: listen to the name, which is a play on the word 'absinthe.' Why, you may ask? Because Absinthe was made illegal many years ago (and is not now), and NOLA, being of a more European culture than the rest of the US, had an absinthe-drinking population, and thereby a demand for it, and Herbsaint was invented AS A REPLACEMENT.

 

Now that absinthe has now been re-legalized, you can use it in a Sazerac. I suggest LUCID, which is a decent cheaper brand, ergo for mixing and not only that, but is produced by a Louisiana fellow, a graduate of USL (Lafayette, Louisiana), Ted Breaux. LUCID has a nice bite that works well in mixed drinks.

 

a nice twist on the Mojito, the Mint Muse:

 

 

 

1 1/2 oz. Lucid Absinthe Superieure

2 oz. Pineapple Juice

Mint Leaves
1 wedge(s) Lime
Sprite or 7-Up

Muddle mint leaves with lime wedge and add Lucid. Add ice and pineapple juice and shake briefly. Top with Sprite or 7-UP and add mint sprig.

2pts white rum
1pt Maraschino liqueur
1pt grapefruit juice
1pt lime juice
1pt simple syrup

Can combine to taste. Serve on the rocks.

If you are where rum is cheap, decent fresh pineapple can usually be had as well.

An old classic from the '20s


Army and Navy Cocktail

1 shot lemon juice
2 shots of your favorite gin
1 t. orgeat syrup
1 - 2 t. simple syrup, to taste

Shake with ice, fine-strain into a chilled martini glass, garnish with lemon peel

A variation on an old standby

 

Panty-remover Mai Tai

 

3 oz Ron Zacapa rum

2 oz white rum (e.g. El Dorado or Ron M.)

1 oz Cointreau

3 oz lime juice

1 t simple syrup

1 t orgeat syrup

 

Shake well with ice, and strain into ice-filled double old fashioned glass, preferably one with kitchy decorations on it.  Garnish with fresh-crushed mint if available, or lime wedge with a little umbrella stuck in it, and 2 cocktail straws.

A really old one, updated

 

Bombo

 

3 oz. dark rum (or amber) e.g. demerara, or some mainland rum

 

2 t. demerara or turbinado or plain dark sugar

 

Place sugar in bottom of  old fashioned glass and fill with ice.   Add rum and stir for a long time to help dissolve sugar as much as possible and also to aid ice melt.      Generously grate fresh nutmeg over all, and serve.   Some also add cinnamon on top, but I don't like it.

Luksusowa Polish Potato Vodka from the freezer

Shaken with ice in a martini shaker

Chilled martini glass from the freezer

Rub lip of glass with lemon twist and drop in

Add 5 frozen blueberries

 

Drink and repeat

What you guys need to remember is there's two kinds of drinking.

 

Drinking to get drunk and

Drinking to get laid

 

There's a huge difference in the drink recipes depending on the assumptions

My favorite recipe is:

  • good scotch (Balvenie Caribbean cask is a fine place to start the evening)
  • maybe just a dash of spring water.
  • refill as needed

1 part Scotch
3 parts Rose's lime
serve over ice

Another delicious drink was the Paisley X-Ray ...

2 parts Drambuie
5 parts Irn-Bru
sprig of mint or grass, smashed
served over ice

Irn-Bru is hard to get outside of Scotland. Paisley X-Rays go great with an afternoon of golf.

Wait, a rusty nail usually has a little less Drambuie, I think 1:1 Drambuie and Scotch is too sweet for a Rusty Nail. More like 1:2 or 2:3 is good.

 

If you like a Rusty Nail though, the Roger Mellie is very good, you might try it, when I was there some folks added quinine to it, thus the Rose's lime, because there was a mild malaria going around Scotland. I never had it with quinine, but I tried it with aspirin powder, that was excellent, the bitter in the aspirin powder ate up some of the sweetness.

 

Drambuie is very delicious, maybe a little too sweet, but the sweetness balance with bitter, like 1:2 Drambuie and Stout. I wish I had one of those right now.

 

I make a very simple Drambuie cocktail, just Drambuie and aspirin powder, never ice, that's a winter drink. The aspirin powder balances the honey in the Drambuie. very delicious. it doesn't have a name.

That's a good idea to have them otw, for some reason I always think of rusty nails as a winter/holiday drink.
