All the 70's looked very powered up.
How come they have to race amongst the H fleet?
Max, now that they have an established fleet we will be giving them a class start albiet with the Melges 24's. Couldn't change the SI's for the Spring Series so starting May 22nd the Melges 24's and the J/70's will start at 5:30. The J/105 fleet is moved up to the 5:25 start. The Melges typically have 4 on the line for Wet Weds and we expect the same turnout weekly for the J/70's. So we'll see if everyone can all get along with this senario. Hopefully. ![]()

Steaming Pile,

B
Since you addressed your message to "Steaming Pile", I presume you mean for Janer to respond. Since she hasn't responded, I will do so in her stead.
1) The boat is named Armida, not Armita. Get your facts straight.
2) If you want to know how much damage was done to Armida, I recommend you consider speaking with those on board, witnesses, and/or people who were involved in fixing the damage. The boat is currently in the yard if you wish to examine its present state.
3) Not sure whose "sorry ass" you miss on Wednesdays and I'm not sure who you include in "we". I, for one, continue to enjoy sailing Wet Wednesdays and I hope you do too. I doubt, however, that anyone misses you based on the tenor of your comments.

We are hoping for 20 J/70's on the line at Fiesta Cup. Those who are coming South after the High Sierra Regatta (July 13-14) are welcome to leave their boats here for the week. Minimial dry storage available, but in the water docking available at SBYC guest dock.
On another note, we are excited about the news of hosting a major Farr 40 event next year. Stay tuned.

Ahmanson Series scoring this year includes a third race on May 4 (NHYC Opening Day race). I believe Rock n Roll will be at Yachting Cup in San Diego that weekend.

We've changed plans. We're going to complete Ahmanson and see if we can win it on the water. The last race is from Long Beach to Newport so we expect to be able to let R&R spread her wings and take off. Fun to beat the sleds boat for boat with a 38 footer. Will also be special because Windward Passage is signed up to race.
Plus, the final race is part of opening day for NHYC which we're told it's quite the party.
Last wekend was a lot of fun - not only because of the results but because it was good days on the water. We felt we were handling the boat well. Still lots to learn but we're making good progress.
And, this may be our second Ahmnason win - took it in '05 w/ the 105.

Rough weather in SB for the second day of the SBSC Cinco de Mayo Regatta caused the RC to eliminate non self bailing boats (Mercury and Harbor 20's) from racing. There was a big turn out of Mercurys, Harbor 20's and J/24's for the event with 4 races on Saturday. Nice work by the Sailing Club in race management and party time! Too bad that today was so gnarly!
Quite a bit of carnage down at San Diego Yacht Club also. Several boats DNS today due to gear failure yesterday. Locals on Crockett's Rocket did not sail in today's races after locking rigs with another big boat, the other boat lost steerage at the start. Rush Street finished in the middle of their class.
Someone chime in on details!

Strange day for the final of Ahmanson. The downwind blast from Long Beach to Newport Beach was fully cloaked as an upwind beat in the standard (although larger than usual) slop off that part of the SoCal coast. Major challenge for drivers and main trimmers with minimal jib adjustment tossed in to occasionally wake the rail weight up - four intentional tacks and one of the crash variety (see below). Breeze 15 - 20 all day and never further aft than about 45.
Great to see Windward Passage and Ragtime come at us from behind. Passage finished just in front of us (after first hitting the beach near the line ahead and to leeward) and Rags didn't quite get by. As we were about to finish a large cruising boat (NHYC opening day racer) went into irons right at the committee boat in our path. Crash tack onto port got us over the line and away from the mess.
Bottom line, in spite of our 1, 2, 16 record, we managed to maintain a one point lead over Amante (Choate 48) and clinch the 2013 Ahmanson Cup. For those interested Fletch was on Amante yesterday and, as usual, entertaining after racing.

Southerlies are our friend.
Nice trip home from San Diego. 15-20 knots S and SE Sunday night, swinging to SW 6-10 on Monday, all the way into SB harbor. Had the main out on the same side for the whole trip.
Best trip home from SD ever. 25 hours slip to slip for a 30 footer.
Congrats to Rock and Roll. Amante is a tough one anytime. Way to go.

Hearing that the virtual on line sailor Mr. Max will be driving tonight, I believe he may meet his match on the water with this old salt.

A team from Perth gave me that shirt when I raced in Adelaide back in '84. DC had just lost the AC Cup a few months earlier. It depicts the Western Australian Black Swan taking the America's Cup from a Bald Eagle. Not very patriotic on my part. Though I did name my charter boat "We Lent You The Cup." That name plus winning 6 out of 7 races in their NACRA Championships got me a lot of press. I was on their national TV news labeled as this "Brash Young American" who came down under and "Pinched" their trophy. DC won back the "BIG One" a couple years later in Perth.

Somehow I think you probably don't look the same as your picture on Twink.com. Now don't get your panties in a bunch. I'm kidding. I think our rate of physical deterioration is almost at the same pace. As I remember, however, you may be a couple hours ahead. That difference is definitely starting to show.Danger Zone, yeah give that one a wide berth.

Nothing really. Unless you are duking it out in the 1-2 positions of a one design race!
Second lap at weather mark, we were 5-6 boatlengths shy of Port layline on Starboard and Escapade (Kenny helming) was 2 boatlengths shy on our windward hip. It was really close between us and we were not quite sure we could tack to port and cross him for the mark (reverse course starboard roundings race). The 52 drove right between us both from behind and wedged between us both, so that we were all side by side approaching the port layline on starboard tack. It was really nip and tuck whether we could tack onto port and cross em both, but the 52 was hard to judge due to their speed. When we tacked to port, we sailed for 2-3 boatlengths and realised it 'aint gonna happen' so we had a situation where we had to luff and wait for the 52 to tack for the mark as we approached them on port. Kenny was inside and this alllowed him to sneak around in front of us. If the 52 was not there we maaaaybe could have crossed him on port.
Escapade ironically had a tight situation cross identical to this on us on the first lap, but they crossed and led around the weather mark.
Really fun race and it was a great tight 105 race. Lead went back and forth between the 2 of us 2-3 times during the race. Hand to hand combat...room at the mark situations, port starboards...just really good clean tight racing.
Hats off to Kenny and the Escapade crew for a clean good tight race.

Muddy,
I totally agree and have already spoken to the Race Director about that. Plus you can't send one fleet around the marks in one direction and then give other fleets a reverse course! Like magnets, they will all come together at some mark rounding and then what you have is CHAOS,
