Quick re-cap of SD NOOD this past weekend:

3 Big Dogs won the J/24 fleet.

YES - my very bad - apologies. They had a good weekend and I think I was told it came down to the wire in the final race between them and Chris Snow. Memory may be fuzzy after long trek home and being re-directed from PCH part way to SB due to mudslide. Had to go back through Santa Monica and get over to the 405 for a partial do-over.

There is already a thread going on about this event which apparently has been on nationwide news for some reason. The people involved are clearly morons. The parents should be held for child endangerment; two little babies and a dog living on a squalid, derelick sailboat, anchored in Fool's Anchorage with a widely publicized giant storm approaching. The Coast Guard did not actually rescue them. They put a man in the water to go over and chit chat with Mr. Moron until the HP could get a decent boat to pick them up.

After yesterday's 3 races two local San Diego boats were in the lead, followed by Bandit, AWB, and Lounge Act in 3rd, 4th and 5th. Go teams! Looked light and bumpy.

It was one of those nights...Blowing 15 to 25 in the afternoon and by the time Wet Weds was about to start the white caps were definitely getting bigger but the wind calmed long enough for folks to think about going out. About 15 boats turned back when the puffs were getting into the 30's. Made for some great bar watching. Couple of pics by B. Bench

It was pretty gnarly out there last night.

Good luck to all the SBYC racers in the Ensenada Race! Despite last night's conditions I think Ensenada will be light, but at least the destination really sucks, which is probably why the entries are down by 50%. I know the SBYC teams will make their own party. B)

SBYC is actively seeking a full time race director. Sadly our current director Dana Jones is leaving soon to pursue a more lucrative career. Position includes all race/regatta management, budgeting, reporting to various committees including the Board of Directors. leadership skills. Please respond to Craig@sbyc.org with resume.

It's going to be very hard to replace Dana. He's been awesome.

Bummer, Dana is awesome. I don't recall a single notable race committee error in the three years I've been racing in SB, pretty much unheard of in this game.

B.t.w. looks like Rush Street demolished their class in the N2E again, good job lads.

A fleet is dead and has been for many, many years.

If you want to actually "race" boats, you need to get in another class.

Have fun tonight, hopefully the sun will be out by the time the race starts.

So, how about a real discussion of the racing scene in SB and how we can get more boats out.

A fleet is dying, no matter Taxi coming out most weeks
The other PHRF classes have been combined in one (rating from 80 to 175....)

Here's a few ideas:
  • Move the starts a little earlier (1st start at 5.00pm) only 5 minutes between class starts so that we can finish before the breeze dies
  • (almost) always do a twice around course, don't be afraid to score from the first lap if the breeze dies before say 50% of the fleet finishes
  • Encourage (enforce) people to move from H class into the racing classes, especially the season winners, maybe H class should be dacron sails only and no legs over the side. Maybe crew from some of the more serious racing boats (who may be in town but the boat is not) could be asked to help with getting people up to speed.
  • Have a logical start sequence, either fastest first or slowest first, (why do Harbor 20's start so early, and J24's so late)
  • Maybe split the starts out to the gate mark so that 2 classes can start at once. (like Harbor 20's and J24's, Melges and J105) so that we can all get in a good race before the breeze dies
  • Try scoring with time on time system (fairer when the breeze is dropping and there is a large spread between boat ratings)
Just my 2c, after sitting around for almost all of the races so far this year waiting to see if we will even finish as the breeze gradually dies......and our time becomes impossible to save

Limey,
You are welcome to attend a Sail Policy Meeting (first Thursday of every month)where we have had "real" discussions for years as to how to best serve the racers in the ever changing fleet dynamics.

Regarding your ideas: Starting at 5 is difficult as most of us work. The starts are already 5 minutes apart. The new Harbor 20 fleet was put in the gap between H Fleet and A.
Putting restrictions on H fleet boats (dacron sails and no hiking) ridiculous. Forcing H Fleet boats into other classes. Ha! You'd see total anarchy with that idea. We have already tried starting 2 classes at once. It's too hard to see the outside line. Always do a twice around course? I think not.

Any other ideas? Please come to a meeting. It's impossible to keep everyone happy, but we try.

Sailboat racing as a sport is in decline, as discussed ad-nauseum elsewhere, for all kinds of reasons. It shouldn't be surprising that the Wet Weds PHRF fleets aren't what they used to be.

I don't know why the H class racers don't race PHRF, presumably they prefer a more laid-back attitude. A small, informal survey might shed some light. But I don't think there's anything intrinsically "better" about racing PHRF vs any other system. The H fleet is very successful, and gets tons of people out on the water, why mess with it?

Nope, Max wasn't there. Nobody's fault - (well maybe the monkey's...) I think it was best described by Tony that a using repaired boom is like recycling condoms, might seem like a good idea at the time - but inevitably disaster's going to strike.

We had what started out as a great first race, by the time we rounded the leeward mark we had conservatively a two minute lead on corrected time. Unfortunately, the headboard sheered on the main after coming down hard on a wave. By the time we jury rigged the main and got it back up the best we could do was finish. Then on the second race at about 1:40 to the gun, a little vang was added and the boom gave out. (the boom repair kit didn't work well either - see pic.)

It was a real bummer, the crew Tom had put together were working well together and the conditions were perfect for Taxi. We all made the best of it the rest of the weekend ponying up to the bar and hot tubbing...

Barry Schuyler was a true lover of the ocean and spent his life as an environmentalist and sailor.
He had a special place in his heart for female sailors and contributed to their efforts in many ways. His Cal 40 Antera was used by the 1999 Women's Transpac team with Linda Elias and Camille Daniels of Long Beach. He also contributed funds to help the Santa Barbara team travel to racing events. More recently he gave his Cal 40 to Liz Clark who is singlehandedly sailing and surfing around the world. Women sailors salute you Barry! You always had confidence in us and we thank you.

T.I.
That is correct. A wake for Clark this Saturday at SBYC. Barry's memorial will be on June 4th at UCSB. Sadly, as our sailing community ages, we end up keeping track of funerals. :(

Reflecting back on Key West a few years ago when we over used the joke that started with:
"Did you blow bubbles when you were a kid?" Yeah, then JAG had to wear the t-shirt.

The question today is "Is the new boat Katana blowing bubbles?"

Hmmmm, stay tuned. :o

Sounds like Katana set a new course record for the Hardway Race-- finished at 6pm. Nice afternoon tour around Santa Cruz Island. I believe Prevail and Skian Dhu corrected on them and also finished before sunset. Waiting for the official results.

Hardway was a good ride. Plenty of breeze all day - varied from about 6 - 7 in the early going then built the rest of the day. Other than a bit of light stuff in the Santa Cruz / Anacapa gap it was mostly in the high teens / low twenties down the island with solid 18 - 28 from the east end to Ventura.

Was a bit of crap shoot getting around the east end - Katana and Prevail tended to play it more toward the west end of Anacapa. By the time we had Skian Dhu there the breeze held closer to the east end of Santa Cruz allowing us to take a better line for Ventura with only minimal light going (6 - 10 kts).

We were third to cross behind Katana and Prevail. Katana set a new record but wasn't going to correct for the podium. Prevail finished just after 7:00 pm and we were about 20 - 25 minutes behind them. Early results had Prevail winning, Skian Dhu correcting to 2nd (about 4 min. off 1st) and the modified 1D 35 in 3rd missing our second by just a minute or so.

Thoughts were that it was likely going to come down to how Larry and his Rush Streeters or maybe some other smaller boat was going to finish.

Haven't been able to find final placings yet.

Thanks, Dirk - good day.

Bernie's new boat is still on schedule for a Sept. arrival.

Tonight was the last race of the Wet Wednesday Spring Series, a light turn out due to high winds but those who went out had a great ride. The Melges 24 Thumper had an epic down wind ride as witnessed by all on the deck. Most aggresive start goes to the J/105 fleet, that was scarey.

Final results:
PHRF A: Bebe 1st, Skian Dhu 2nd
PHRF B: Misbehavin 1st, Rush Street 2nd
H Fleet: Second Wind 1st, Tranquility 2nd
Harbor 20: Fling 1st, Cardemmian 2nd
J/105: Rockin & Groovin 1st, Free Enterprise 2nd
J/24: 3 Big Dogs 1st, Svenja 2nd
Melges 24: Average White Boat 1st, Thumper 2nd

A great weekend of racing, however I would like to take a couple of seasoned sailors to school.
1. When you finish a race with only 2 classes you should not sail off to la la land to eat sandwiches and then realize that your class is in sequence for the next race; power up pedal to the metal and shut off your engine within one minute of the start and do a 360 and think you have exonerated yourself ;)
2. It is not cool to run the line when a class is in starting sequence and it's not your class.

Jezz. Just sayin'

Janer:

Two new boats in the mix - Twisted came down from SF representing StFYC and we have an all new boat - Viva la Vida (formerly Goombay Smash) - hailing out of LBYC. The team from Acapulco is coming up for LBRW. I too wish we had Barking Mad to line up against!

Pros include include Morgan Larson, Marty Kullman, Eric Arndt, Eric Doyle, Chad Hough, Scott Dickson, Norman Davant, Don Teakell and more.

More new boats on the immediate horizon. Local fleet now numbers 14 active boats racing.

As for entry fee - included are all social events including high class dinner for entire crew and spouses Friday night. International Jury flying in, etc. etc.

I think when it's all over you will think it was a value!

Best,
Dave

Low? If they sail it normally I would suspect low will not be in their lingo, more like "Drive it like it's hot".
