When you first heard about the mini transat, did you immediately think "I. MUST. DO. THAT."? Well, I did ... and am looking for anyone sailing minis in Sydney. Tell me your stories!

There is one up here in Airlie but its not much chop.He has only sailed it a few times and I believe it has a bit of age on it.
Still at the end of the day it is one and he's havin a go.

I think for Oz the Class 950 could be a better alternative - still small (30ft) but much bigger on the creature comforts than a mini and capable of also being used fully crewed in some of the coastal races.
Lots of sail and a powerful hull form, so should be quick too

It's on its way to France now. Sitting at the docks ready to load onto Ital Maderna. It will take it to Singapore, then to Le Harve.

G´day fellows,

good to see that there´s at least a little bit of interest in the minis here in OZ!!
usually i´m spending my time on the water on a windsurfer, but there´s a new idea in my head...
time in OZ is running out for me, (the visa finishes soon) and i would like to return back to europe in style, sailing all the way in a mini 6.5!!
does someone here know a builder in Oz who´s got experience in building a mini?!

thank you for any help, hints or advise

lars

If you are in a hurry (visa-wise) why not buy a used, or new, series boat?
Half the price & half the time to get under-way.

You could probably pick up a bargain with this, It's been on the market for at least 12 months now.

you are assuming there are Minis in aus, as this thread is

might be one old one but it ain't gonna get to England

buy a S&S 34 if you are Fair-Dinkum about sailing 'home', .... but send it back when you are done, it's the downunder choice of successful single-hander trans-ocean journeys, anecdotal says it will get you there

g´day fellows,

thanks for your input...Krakatoa 2 still is a little bit over the budget i guess...second hand minis are not available in OZ, so importing one would be like buying the `cat in the sack`... not really beeing able to tell what you get for your bucks, or buying a series-production one and shipping that one to OZ: doesn´t help the local boat-building-people and the enviromental aspect, that is one of the reasons for myself to do this trip falls short too...
so maybe i should look for a different class of boat: like the S&S 34?!?

I'm looking for mates who want to build their own minis. I'll prepare all, a shipyard or industrial land near Sydney, industrialised production for 4-5 minis, prepeg technology. We need to find a designer to define hydrodynamics etc... Share expenses, help with production, share moulds...
Speak and manage with sailing clubs a participation in races all over Sydney harbour, and offshore races... Coordinate a squeduled race and training sessions...

hey Thomas,

i believe 'wings' was last raced as usa176 'reality'...be interesting how it found it's way all the way down under!!
it's a romanelli design and looking through the history of boatnumbers on the 'unofficial-mini-forum' -link you've posted, i found an image of it.
...'wings' still carrying a sail from the old sponsor with the number 176 on it...
guess the boys in qld can fill me in with the rest of the story...cya in feb!!

Or rather, used to, at times. Now it runs from Douarnenez via Lanzarote and ends in the Caribbean, namely in Pointe-à-Pietre on Guadeloupe. You're behind, my good Archie.
