It's prolly a good thing Burnham YC's webcam shut down in 2010. I'd have sat here all day. Shouting at the screen, "Look out! Here comes a big wave!"

Thanks, Stewie. IdiotBoy over here (*waves* ) went and bought a sailboat lying Burnham YC late last week. Poor thing's been mewed up ever since, unable to move as Lake Michigan decided to go kookoo. I've been anxious ever since, imagining Adler Planetarium rolling down and squashing it.

Actually, I saw the boat on Saturday sitting quitely in front of the YC. It's in a rather safe place. As long as it was secured reasonably, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

One of the dangers of the internet -- besides midget clown porn -- is finding new shit to scare yourself with. While looking for Lake Michigan storm info, I stumbled across the tale of Chicago's 1954 seiche event. That seemed to involve T-storms, tho. Not just hard north winds. Don't mind me....

Wonder if Red will be back in town then
And no, Red won't be here yet
That's good news, ChiGuy. I spoke with Burnham today & they seemed pretty blaise about the whole "30' waves eroding the breakwaters, woe, woe" thing. This may be a weekly occurance in Chicago, I dunno. And they've kindly extended the season thru Saturday on account of the weather. So all is well.

Oh yeah, if we are going to have "sponsors" or door prizes let them have their say and feel as if they got their $$'s worth. If they don't have a voice then they should not be there. I, personally, don't need to wake up in the am with miscellaneous chatchkis in my pockets. That's just me, promoting SA, nasty girl, lip balm etc is not what I go for, it to see you jerks. How hard is it to find a back room with a $25 or $35 special where we can all get together and have a laugh

Harder than you think, I think. When we were looking for the Fake Yacht Prom, people are hesitant to rent a room with out a deposit. I didn't have any deposit.

- Downtown location (400 N McClurg) right on the river. A bit off the beaten path in a good way, so we shouldn't get in too much trouble!
- Parking - come in for the show, short walk to/from Navy Pier, Lizzie's will validate parking for $8! Got that? $8 for 24 hour parking.
- CTA - depends on what bus you typically take, 7min walk from the 151
- Space - they're willing to reserve most of the bar for us 75%
- Bar - the bar itself is similar to WM, but it was packed when I arrived, I got a beer in less than 10s
- cover charge - so long as sponsors cooperate, you're going to only pay $10!!! Or at least til the included booze runs dry
- you say you don't like 312 or Mount Gay? We'll have our own drink specials and well drinks start at about $5
How does this all sound???

The lake is 307 miles long by 118 miles wide, with 1,640 mile of shoreline. When you step back and take a look, we (the collective "we" of all of the parts of sailing) are not coordinated. The clubs, schools, sailors, shipyards, chandelries, marinas, dealers, brokers, lenders, etc. all operate independently. It sure seems if we all could get on the same page and work together to grow sailboat racing again, there would be a better chance of success. So if we get to know just a little about you, it becomes much easier to bring the various constituents together.
We stuck our neck out by offering the newsletter to all sailors on Lake Michigan, not just those who pay dues (by the way, this has actually turned into a benefit for those who do pay dues which will be described in a later newsletter). By attempting to pull all racing sailors on Lake Michigan together, we can do a better job of communicating and growing.
So when we talk to the marine business in Manitowoc and report that we have 400 sailors in a 75 mile radius, we get their attention. Because they don't have a list of 400 sailors on their own.
The sport needs to integrate and stop working as separate pieces. How do we know? Because the current business model is failing!

So you are looking to get a list to sell to advertisers?

Back when we had a printed yearbook, we sold ads in the book. We would accept ads today for the newsletter or the website. We also have to remain within the confines of not-for-profit tax laws and will be keen to keep our UBI in check which means that advertising would be limited as a result. But to be clear, those ads would only show up in the newsletter or on the website. There would be no direct for-profit single piece marketing to anyone.
And if you remember the book, there weren't that many ads to begin with. Look at the homepage of this website and the sponsored forums. To accomplish that you have to have readership in the tens and hundreds of thousands. Lake Michigan just doesn't have that kind of readership available due to its regional territory. Just trying to be realistic.

I may have been imagining this but I thought I saw someone write on this page or another SA forum page that the Park District was considering waiving the 25% surcharge for non-residents in order to encourage boats back into the harbors. That apparently didn't happen as my invoice included the surcharge.
That only applies to 31st St.
