You probably won’t find bigger fans of ultra light racing cats than us, but modern cats are starting to get pretty monotonous to look at. In everything from A-Class to F-18s to the ‘super beach cats’ and all the way up to the AC-45, designers seem to have settled in on a common look, and as sexy as it is, we’re getting a bit snoozy about the whole thing.

Still, they’re all gorgeous, especially the new M&M designed/Hakes NZ built SL-33 – and here’s boat number 1, just out of the shed a couple of weeks ago. Eventually (like every raceboat is marketed nowadays) the SL-33 is meant to be a one-design class, but an ‘ocean’ rig and the absolute ease of hauling the less-than-600kg package around might make this the world’s ultimate coastal race record-breaker.

Pete Melvin is proud of the work they’ve put into the new 33, and points out that focusing on similarities to other new designs ignores how refined the 33 is. “We think the SL33 has some features that set it clearly apart from these other boats, such as sexy (and very functional) curved beams and very clean connections to the hulls, hulls designed specifically to work with the standard curved lifting foils,” said Melvin. “There are lots of other details that you don’t notice until you look closely, and it’s worth looking!”

This one goes to Lake Constance in Germany, while Hakes says that one boat is already committed to San Francisco and two winged versions are heading to an AC syndicate – possibly ETNZ, just down the road…Specs are here and a composite pic is here

Yo K38......

This boat originally hit the SA Forums back in January in this thread.

Very cool boat. I wonder who the S.F. Bay owner is.

ursus....is it you???

Missed that then. Did do a search and didn't see a thread specific to what I think is/will be an important boat for multiple reasons.
One reason is that it can be AC configured boat- and just small enough to avoid being a surrogate yacht in the protocol.
I'm curious about the bay boat too..

I spoke to Pete Melvin today. He said one of the SL-33's was being trucked from Wellington to Auckland and will be sailing on the harbour in the next week or so. I told him I would like one in my Christmas stocking this year.:)

They are very sexy looking boats, I had a look over one in the Oven at Hakes on Friday.

Why let the paid AC professionals have all the fun for themselves?

PM me if you are interested in a full of partial ownership of an SL33 on SF Bay…

It comes with a smaller 'ocean rig', perfect for SF Bay and is better reefable then the AC45 hardwings, too ;-)
Cost is roughly 1/4 of an AC45 and 1/2 of an Extreme 40

Boat #4 is currently being built:
http://www.hakesmarine.co.nz/home.html

Yes, this is a sockpuppet account, but I have no commercial interests in the SL33.

This "thing," for lack of a better term, sure looks awesome! More reasonable and manageable than the rigid-wing AC45, much less the yet-to-be-sailed AC72. I wonder if any of these SL-33's will go to Lake Geneva, which is arguably the hottest scene for developmental multihulls. The Bol d'Or is just a few weeks away, isn't it?

The etnz boat just sailed past my house. Leeward hull looks nearly submerged as the windward hull is just leaving the water, quite a strange attitude. Looked to be having a few issues getting it going.

They broke the spreader below the front beam, so that they have had to secure the mast. Heard also some more other little problems, but this is still normal with such kind of boats, built that close at the limit of weight. Boat looks stunning and will be a rocket in mid/light winds for sure!

This cat is close to pitchpole in less than 15 knots of wind on flat water, even with curved foils... :D

U R welcome TC

SW Update:
"Unfortunately the video we posted has been withdrawn by the user as Emirates Team NZs designers saw something in the video they did not want on public release. We are hoping that the video will be replaced. Otherwise we will have a report up on Wednesday (weather permitting) of the SL33's on the water.
In the video the leeward hull of the SL33 was showing a propensity to lift out of the water, as it is beginning to do in this picture. The leeward foil is only half lowered, and the windward foil is not fully retracted either. Prior to the video being taken down the SL33 was using curved foils of the type shown in the photo above. "

Ok, the unveiling of ALEPH AC45 today got me thinking. If I won the lottery and was going to buy an SL33 for use in SF Bay... what would I do for cool colors and graphics?
Try and mimic an OR scheme? go for something USA patriotic? or what? Pics would be nice to illustrate your ideas. I think the beams and spar are clearcoat carbon fiber.

Nobody wants to fantasize about cool paint job graphics for an SL33 (w clear coat carbon beams/spars)?

I'm still thinking ALEPH is a good start.

Black or dark colour's seem to be the colour of choice

maybe dark colours say Bad, Outa control, Wicked

Does ferrari red work on the water, is white a little common

Maybe a few bright colours for each like the wiggles

Seems to be Bank Pop has taken over blue, green has gone to Groupama, red is all over Crepes Wahoo

Yellow and Pink are still available go for it, own those colours, make them your own

Thanks SL33 sf for posting these nice pics,

I am very curious about 2 questions:

1-the connection beween the cross-beam and the hulls, I understood the ccross-beams come into "sleeves", but it is not mentionned wether it is a "conical plug" or not ?

2-Does the curved cross-beams create some "extra-moment" with regard to twisting loads and does it make the sitffness issue more challenging ?

Beach cat with similar cross-beam could be much safer and faster in the chop, at least it is what I guess (as long as the box rules allow such cross-beam solutions)

Best regards

W

Quick question-attaching the traveller track to carbon beam (and alloy rudder gudgeons)- what do you do to stop electrolysis? It looks like a great fit but what do the stainless bolts go into and is there a barrier over the carbon?
Thanks,

Oso Oro

Gold Bear in Spanish, I think this not grammatically correct, but looks cooler than Oso de Oro.
Plays on the California Bear on our flag, the Golden Gate, the owner's first name, and the fact that it'll be a brute in SF Bay.

Thanks for all the cool name proposals!

Boat is on track to be delivered late next week or the week after. PM me if you want to help unbox it (@ Alameda, CA, USA).

Any novel ideas on insurance? I have a good quote from Markel (through an SA advertiser) but would prefer more than one option.
Most 'normal' insurances seem to bail because they don't cover racing cats, don't know the builder, don't want to get involved with stuff they don't understand, etc...

Now that I know whose boat this is, the name "Ursus" seems the best choice. Ursus Horibilis is the latin for a Grizzly Bear. Since the 45's and 72's will rule next year maybe Ursa Minor might work. (BTW if you pick one of these, I get to go for a ride : ). Pete
