Endurance. Roger Derusha, M&M.  C&C 43.  Chicago to Mackinac Race, MHS Section 1, rated 551.6.

Data above from 1983 scratch sheet booklet.

Roger's gone now, but the last I heard, his family was still sailing the boat.

That looks like the Heritage One Ton version. I recall from the late 70's

One in the same.  Charley Morgan sent me that pic, he said it was taken during a match race series he put on between two of his one tons.  One with a standard keel and the other with a new design that he had done testing wind tunnel testing at Witchita State.  The new keel trounced the standard one.

Beautiful shot Larry!

It's been a while since I've been on a boat with a blooper but I don't remember ever having the tack set from the windward rail like that. Any benefit to this?

Anyone with a cool quarter million for a restored (and upgraded) Cold Molded Peterson 41?

3856722_20120223120549_1_LARGE.jpg&w=600

That boat is freaking gorgeous. Wish I had that kind of scratch to give it a good home. wub.gif

I've got a lot of history on that boat. I raced on it with the third owner. Affectionately called the "Cedar Speeder". A lot of fun. Pretty boat - ugly crew! wink.gif It was used as a liveaboard in the Gulf Islands for awhile when one of the owners built a house in the Gulf Islands. It was reno'd by the son/family of the original owner in '80. I see it's got a carbon rig now and the third owner & their crew painted the mast "guard rail yellow" in keeping with the original theme and colour.

Sorry for the hi-jack Larry put while we are talking about cold mold and Jesperson builds:

http://www.jespersen...r_imagepage.htm

Peterson 37 "Distant Drummer". A work of art really and I sailed against her in my Ganbare days. A lot of history with her too but I'll shut up now.

That boat is still on the market, down to $150K asking - probably what the keel & carbon rig cost. Definitely in the running for the most beautiful boat ever in these waters.

Must be nice to be rich!

My recollection of DD was at PITCH in 1979.  Massive broach.  Owner over the side hanging on the tiller extension.  We rounded windward mark in first and stayed wing on wing with the gusts coming through so the carnage was behind us.  Good choice.  Crew shouts something along the lines of "holy fuck" followed by "don't look" when 3 or 4  more went down.

Oh the good old days!

A couple of things will be remembered for at PITCH in 1979 but I wasn't there for the Saturday when the trouble started. No wind on Sunday if I remember. I have a pic of DD somewhere and a lot of history but it's over 6ish on a Friday and I'm moving barward!

I can no longer remember the year but it was in the early to mid 90s during the Bayview Mackinaw race we were racing in 60 miles from the finish on the Ben 1ton Toscana, x-poltergeist going almost dead down in 25 to 40 kt with kites when we caught Endurance with kite and we said to ourselves we are not doing that well if they are still in front of us (we were right about that).  But we caught them and shortly thereafter they broached and took the kite down which was the end of our contact. We had everyone on deck, in the stern, except by partner in the boat, at the time.  Shortly after leaving Endurance we buried the bow with blue water covering the forward hatch and the most of the doghouse as far back as pit (when she poped out with out pitchpoling my partner promptly joined us in the back of the boat.  We also set the all time high score (for us) on that boat of 26 kt when she came out leaving Endurance behind (even though she was crushing us on handicap).  Great memories, Great times.  I love sail boat racing.

Big Foot.  P. Save, Stockholm, Sweden.  Norlin 40. 1984 SORC, rated IOR 31.0. St. Petersburg to Ft. Lauderdale Race.

In response to a request from Markus Norlin, I found another photo of Big Foot.

Markus is planning a memorial for his father, Peter Norlin.

Photos of many boats of Peter Norlin design will be displayed.

I'm glad to be of help.

I remember that race, too.  Though not sure of the year, either.  Sailed on Soverel 39 from Green Bay.  Turned the corner at the buoy and the wind howling from behind.  We had everybody behind the driver, too.  Think we hit 20.

Pokey.

That was a while ago, wasn't it?
He retired, moved to FL, modified the keel on that boat and took it down there.
Saw him in Door County 2 years ago.
Ran into another former crew last summer who is also retired and living in FL.

The C&C Crusader hull #1 lives next to me on the Chesapeake. I am told she came from the Lakes, but moved here to the Chesapeake. She raced for a good long time. Her name is Old Blue now, but this is not original. Does anyone remember this boat? She is very nice.

I was racing with Chuck. We never seemed to beat you guys when I was on the boat.

I remember finishing on Fancy Free's transom in the 1999 Q-Cup. I think that was the last match-up for the Soverel Cup .

Good times!

Because we won 1-Ton in 1979 (I'm looking at the trophy) my memory is pretty sharp.  Friday and Saturday were good wind days, but no real issues.  Sunday was the day of carnage.  We had the numbers to be conservative and hold on.  Let a couple Ganbare's go by, but never had our closest competitor (Shorret in a Heritage 1-Tonner) get past.

Good times

Maybe it was '78 then. I just remember the no wind Sunday.

Pic of DD but I think it's already posted somewhere here.

In Swiftsure '77 we had a match race with DD on one of the Peterson 35's from Sheringham to the finish. When it finally filled in in the morning it go up to 30 I think and we blew out 3 kites in a hour & half. Rolly-polly bitches that for certain and we had the crew standing on the pulpit trying to stop the cavitation and wipe out. This boat had bow down for the IOR trim. Great in 12 knots upwind. Over 15 knots downwind it was a full on broach coach - yikes!

there's one down here on the ms. gulf coast...
the original owner was the late jack haviland....
i used to crew on it from time to time...
jack died and the boat sat in the slip going to hell and even sank a few times.
an attorney contacted me a few weeks ago because he needed some info on the boat for the new owner....

Endurance. Roger Derusha, M&M.  C&C 43.  Chicago to Mackinac Race, MHS Section 1, rated 551.6.

Data above from 1983 scratch sheet booklet.

Roger's gone now, but the last I heard, his family was still sailing the boat.

The hulls were different?.

The June 1971 magazine article/review stated: The accommodations of the "43" may be varied within the standard hull and deck moldings.

From the September 1971 magazine C&C advertisement  ...'Limited editions' (with custom designed and custom built interiors) and "one off" yachts... "Built by Bruckmann".

Our 1970 C&C 43 is hull #1 of the Limited Edition series 43's.  Launched as "Arieto", the interior is significantly different than the other 43's I have seen or seen pictures off.  The hull, deck, and keel are similar to the early 43's however I have read that some of the 43's completed in the late 70's (maybe hull # 14 or 15) had updated keels and rudders.

In the mid 70's hulls # 1 and 2 ("Arieto" and "Destination") had their sterns bobbed (looked like a C&C 39 stern) to help with the IOR ratings.  To my knowledge these were the only two hulls bobbed.  Hull #2 has since had its stern mostly restored with the addition of a swim step.  Hull #1 is still bobbed.

There are a few full custom 43's with different hull and deck designs.  There is also a Landfall 43 that was designed and built for longer range cruising. Some of these newer 43's were built in the 80's.

I was going to say: Not a X-1 ton. The primary winches are in the wrong place. On the 1 tonner they were consolidated in the forward end of the cockpit tub near the companionway. A lot of the "features" on Shiftless is pure X-Yachts. but I had to look at it for awhile. Lots of similarities on a DB.

Thanks. I had thought the 15 43-1s had the same hull, foils and rigs with different interiors. Apparently not quite true.

Well, the "speed wrinkle" along the luff of the main don't look to good to my eye; but the spar & rigging is state of the art for 'way back then

And Larry, thanks again for making the best thread on whole internet!

Another nice shot Larry!

The 1984 SORC results show Golden Eagle as a S&S 52 (40.3ft IOR) though - which make sense as she does have that heavier and high-wooded S&S look about her. She finished 9th in Class B and 46th overall.

Finally!!!!! Larry, you rock!  I've been waiting to see if you would ever find a picture of her since the thread started.  Its a shame though, Sandy may have claimed her.  She sits sans keel, rudder, and rig.
