And what have we heard from jsmin...? Cricket, cricket, cricket. Thanks for the other side of the coin Titge. As well as your POV Doug. It all helps to make this thing come back from the dead. And I only feel this way since Bob took it over. Otherwise, it could/should die on the vine.

i am just like you (as you can see from all my previous posts) and want this regatta to keep rolling.
has been a good 2 years, bob shepard and his numerous crew have done a great job. can't wait to see what they have in for us next year.
j105 - had 5 boats signed up until very last minute
j120 - had 5 boats signed up way early (like 2-3 months ago, 1 boat bailed sometime ago and 2 boats bailed very late)
OD limits are very tough line and we all would have liked to have more boats in our classes. get your classes to sign up early and light fires under everybody to get there.
my guess is the housing was tough for some as the island is pretty much full up for every weekend during the summer.
On to the Falcon Cup this weekend - who is in?

big chicken - no problems, didn't mean to really blast you and hope you didn't take it that way. as i first read your post, i thought you were nit picking the regatta. not trying to protect a friend or anything like that (i am sure the pros can do that themselves). how one or another boat does shouldn't really matter as that could change on the weather and other circumstances.

It is too bad that no one from North Cape volunteered to be on the R/C boat as an adviser.
I know you didn't mean to imply that North Cape has just been on the sidelines with respect to Bay Week. The club has done our best to bring as many competitors as possible to Bay Week for many years and in addition to bringing over race marks, etc., we did provide the RC for the Casual Cruising course the last two years as well as a number of people on the organizing committee. Additionally Junior Race Week this year was chaired (and substantially staffed) by our club members.
On our boat we've done on-the-water RC too many times to begin to count at all sorts of events for a lot of years but have never had that pleasure at Bay Week. We do still get out and race because we enjoy it on Foghorn but our serious days of competition are largely behind us. Perhaps volunteering for that task may be something that we could think about for some year if the organizers have a need and would be interested in having us.

rating is a rating - that can be the main problem when peeps get a basically one off boat and race her. how do you know how to race her to the rating if you don't have another one to tune or figure it out with. can get lulled into thinking you don't have a chance or into the blame the rating game.
i say just sail as much as you can and keep on having the big smiles from how much fun it is to sail on those fast boats - anytime you want to switch boats for a regatta.......

I also have run many on water, after 40 Years racing. It is easy running good races at your home club. It is also easy running races at outside clubs when you have local knowledge people on the R/C Boat. AI PIB it is not easy because we do not see many locals with us who share their local knowledge. Almose everyone on both East and West courses were from Edgewater. Windward Leeward are just about the same all over but with the islands local knowledge is necessary. In the future I will welcome anyone who knows the islands to come aboard and share their knowledge. We will make sure they get the same food and water that we get.
It is too bad that no one from North Cape volunteered to be on the R/C boat as an adviser.

Wow. Miss a day miss a lot. At the risk of pouring gas on an almost out flame, I just saw this today.I want to be fair so let me start out by saying that the final day of racing on the West PHRF/JAM course was very well conducted. Communication from the Race Committee was generally good and informative, the race courses were well set, the change of weather mark during the last race was well done and signaled, and rolling starts for the second race of the day were well executed. All-in-all the race committee was on form on Sunday. Well done.
But that being said, there were problems that could have/should have been resolved prior to that point.
• The Sailing Instructions listed the wrong time for Sunday’s start. The Notice of Race intended for Sunday to have the first warning signal at 8:25 to provide more flexibility in getting in races on Sunday prior to the Noon cutoff. It appears you hadn’t read the NOR carefully enough to notice that intended change from the Friday/Saturday start time of 9:25 when you wrote the SIs for the West Course. An hour was lost on Sunday that could have been critical.
• The courses for both Race Courses J and K had fatal flaws that effectively allowed you to start, sail around either the Committee Boat or the Pin (on the respective course) and then finish without sailing “around” any of the marks. As I understand it the courses were designed by others but those errors weren’t caught until a competitor pointed it out on the water.
• I don’t believe that the SIs for the West Course were distributed to the regatta committee prior to the event (at least I didn’t receive a copy of same as I did of the East Course SIs by email). Had that been done, the above two mistakes may well have been caught by a committee member in time to correct the errors.
• On Friday, the RC made an unfortunate choice of courses for the first race for at minimum the JAM fleet.
o Using the G course around the islands for the first race of the day effectively negated the possibility in the Race Committee’s mind to get in a second race on Friday for that fleet. Ideally, the use of Course B (Windward/Leeward twice around) first would have completed Race #1 and allowed plenty of time to get in an around the islands Race #2 for both the PHRF and JAM fleets.
o Alternatively the RC could have chosen the H course (as it was designed) for the JAM fleet for the first race, thus shortening the distance and allowing the JAM fleet to return in time for the RC to allow the JAM boats to have a second race on the W/L course. Clearly a missed opportunity.
o Further, on what continued to develop into as nice a day for sailing as you ever see in the islands in early August, the decision to send the JAM fleet back to the dock prior to 1:00 PM while at the same time holding a W/L race for the PHRF fleet was incomprehensible. The race course was set up and operational, to not use it for the JAM fleet was another missed opportunity.
• That decision to not utilize the excellent conditions on Friday was further compounded by the ensuing Saturday conditions of effectively very little wind offshore. While kudos for managing to get in one shortened W/L race on Saturday when the East Course didn’t have conditions to even complete one race after two attempts, it is highly questionable why the RC decided to take the race course so far west of the islands in the first place on a day when breeze would be at a premium. Perhaps it was the RC’s unfamiliarity with local conditions around the islands that caused them to say over the radio that you wanted to get away from the influence of the islands, but it is common knowledge that there will be at least some breeze near the islands on days of that sort when there is nothing out on the lake. With a mark boat at the disposal of the RC it would have been a simple matter to send them back to the area between Green, Rattlesnake and South Bass to check the wind conditions. If that had been done, the RC could have relocated the race course for a second race of the day. I’m sure you encountered that wind as you returned to the dock. Yet another missed opportunity.
We do appreciate the fact that the West Course PRO and the Race Committee members were willing to conduct the races at Bay Week. But having agreed to do so, it is incumbent upon them to bring their “A” game. All entrants in the regatta deserve your best efforts, we are all devoting the same time and paying the same money to be able to participate in the races, and segments of the fleet should not be treated any less preferentially than others. Hopefully if you are once again in a position where you will be conducting the races at Bay Week, you will utilize all the resources available to provide the best regatta possible for those who have made substantial time and financial commitments to participate. The regatta suffered for way too many years from lax efforts on the part of the organizers and the competitor support consequently all but disappeared. The efforts of Bob Shepherd and his committee have gong a long way towards stemming the tide and hopefully restoring some of the former glory of Bay Week but it needs the full effort of all involved to continue the progress.

It should be fine on the Falcon... as long as there's enough water to dock at Mentor... not sure if that hydraulic keel lift is in working order.

Wow, last night was fricking gourgeous at North Cape. A steady 12-14 out of the northwest, flat water, pink lit cumulus clouds, an almost full moon, and very close racing on a perfect weather leg up the last beat. It just can't get any better. If we get another 20 weeks of Wednesdays just like that life will be okay.
Sounds pretty fantastic to me... I second that for 20 more weeks haha.

I didn't say anything like that. In fact, I'm sure I could hear DWB down the river last night hootin' it up on the Harbor 20's. Something about ditchin' the sled and getting a fleet of H20s...

my guess is the AWA will be somewhere around 100 degrees (depending on your speed)and AWS will be in the mid teens - sounds like a great day on the water
where are the keys for the farr36? when does it need to be back to the dock or can leave at MHYC and you can do Grand River Regatta the following weekend
Uh Ohh... Maybe 5 kts and shifty was right after all.

Kent,I know you didn't mean to imply that North Cape has just been on the sidelines with respect to Bay Week.
I don't have your e-mail. I sent you a PM so you can send it to me. We are going to have a recap about this years Bay in the next few weeks. I will make sure you get an invitation. The Committee can use all the volunteers it can get. You can be part of the solution or you can be....
Well I am now a stake holder, so I'll be there. I will be happy to discuss any concerns you have then in person.
Please review Rule 28.1 commonly referred to as the "string rule." Course "J" & "K" are valid courses, just not very good with the wind from the East.
See you in a few weeks,
Mike

Thanks for the assist, FarReach. what a sweet boat....almost makes me feel bad that shortly after taking the video, we took her up, causing her to rip her chute...then our sprit caught her back stay, and we brought down her mizzen...oh well, that's racing!

so what do i win for correctly guessing a t-10 (or should i say 6 t-10's could have) winning the Falcon Cup?
fun race - good day on the water
Maybe next year they can run the race the day before the rest of the fleet. Instead of 30 or 40 minutes earlier than their phrf class would have been. I still am not quite sure why they would start before all of the cruising boats and the double handed boats. Maybe I am crazy, but I was also surprised to see a stilleto cat in PHRF A.
Strage times at mentor.

That being said, it was great day of racing and the weather couldn't have been nicer. Congrats to the Alden 55 for their victory over the J-105s. The gollywobbler rules in those medium air reaches. I wish someone had a video of them gybing the spinnaker, gollywobbler, main, and mizzen sail all at the same time. That must be quite a feat.

This boat should have won the Falcon Cup many years back (late 70's I believe). But due to rules at the time was not given the win.
It is now for sale and can be yours for only $450 and some elbow grease.....My link.
Anyone remember the name. Hint....it was from Erie.

link to prelim scratch sheet and starting times - received in an email
zar - you gotta get this guy to do the stuff for crw, you get emails on everything that is going on and up to the minute info via email and website
my vote is a t-10 wins it and first to finish this year. they are starting 1st for some reason, way ahead of any of the phrf boats and something like an hour ahead of phrf A.
Well Predicted Jim

My prediction is a MacGregor 70 for cruising purposes (and since we already have established that 70 footers are TOTALLY practical for CYC...)
and a Melges 32 after the MacGregor 70 snaps in half.

Predictions for the next "horse". Mr. Ed is getting old. How about a Farr 40 named Stalking Horse (Watchout Bob Sled). TP 52- Horse with No Name, J-122 Horse for the Course, Tartan 27- Horse with No Game, Island Packet 42- Rocking Horse. The speculation begins.
Someone is going to get a pretty nice boat with Mr. Ed.
+1 for the F40 (-9)

What does Rambler rate in PHRF? It's draft should fit in the river now, right?

No Rambler won't fit in at CYC now. It's got more draft then ever. How deep IS the tip of that carbon rig nelow the water?

mr ed will getting bcak to his roots and want to go somewhat easier so he doesn't have to worry about finding so many drinkers, i mean crew - he will be getting a j105 and going OD so he doesn't have to worry about ratings or spin poles
Then he would go back to his real roots a "Star Boat"

I call bullshit -- there's plenty of drinking in the J105 fleet.
