So we get the rudder back in time & it went back in with no problems at all. But the bottom bearing is leaking, just enough to be annoying. I reckon most Sydney yachts have the same bearing design done by private parts, and maybe the same leak. So you Sydney yacht owners, has anyone come up with a sensible solution?
leak is between the fixed (hull) outer & inner (stock), through the sealing faces & o-rings. Leaks more on stbd tack than port. Leaks a lot through the tack, as the boat sits up with littel rudder load.
We had the seals replaced & bearings serviced. Bearings in good nick. I can't see the point in doing this again if it did not work the first time. Fit thicker o-rings - probably just wear through them? Drill & install a grease nipple between two of the o-rings & fill it with some grease?
Constructive suggestions welcomed

Michael Bartley Shipwrights, Woolwich Marina - 02 9879 4223i fixed one a couple of years ago which had a similar problem. We pulled the bearing assuming it was leaky seals but found the moulding (in which the whole bearing is fastened) had cracked loose from the hull grid moulding. they pre fasten/seal the bearing into the moulding then (probably with a dummy shaft) spooge the whole lot into the grid. fix involved getting rid
They did the above fix and it hasn't leaked a drop since, sent everyone mad as to where the water was coming from

I know you Sydney36 tragics have been gagging to hear what happened in S2H this year! “Local Hero” & “This Way Up” both did a fine job smashing their way south to Hobart. Me & the boys on TWU managed to beat the Silver fox’s boys in by about ½ hour or so – We were pretty chuffed with that, particularly given the experience on board LH versus TWU – All 1st timers.
It was on the nose most of the way, and we got absolutely smashed across Bass Strait – No.4 & two reefs for two days. You feel very insignificant & isolated in the middle of Bass Strait on a 36” boat. I heard a few of the other small boats had the storm sails out – Just another typical Bass Strait crossing??? Third night out the rudder bearing failed (again!) which resulted in us getting pretty heavy flooding, eventually knocking out all our electrics. We managed to find our way to Hobart the last few days with a hand held GPS, and still made every sked using sat phone.
Hobart welcome was fantastic. We tried to catch up with the LH boys to say hello, but always missed them.
We replaced the lower rudder bearing (again) in Hobart. Two days out on the way back to Geelong the boys threw a prop blade, so no choice but to sail back to Hobart. That scuppered Geelong Week & SA. New prop should be fitted this week, plan now is to lay TWU up in Hobart for a bit, and then look at doing some more stuff along the east coast later in the year. Stay tuned punters.
I’m sure the boys on LH have a few stories to tell as well, I’ll leave that to them. As always, we prefer pictures to words, link below to how we did it....

Local Hero crew here
This is what really confused me:

So, finish time for TWU = 7:14:59pm - 45mins = 6:30pm
This is what the website is currently showing.
BUT, in the drunken haze that is the usual after the finish, When I checked the website I'm sure I saw you guys ahead of us, by about 15-20mins?
I did have far more reason than usual to get very very very drunk as well:

The online results for us are pharqued. We finished in 4d, 4H & 44m (ie: ~5.45pm in Hobart), and saw you guys come in about 30 min later - We gave you three cheers. We were totally gutted copping that penalty, it was very unfair. But we had no luck with the iNternational Jury, so we all decided we don't give a flying ferk about what is published as official results - They are wrong, we are over it. Given that only 6 months previous, the toughest thing we had ever done was an overnight Cat 3 race, we are very happy with everything we have achieved, including minor sailing celebrity status back here in Perth. And we have had the best time in Sydney & Hobart.
If all goes well, we should be able to see you guys for a sail &/or beer later in the year

This year she met me down there and I popped the question as the boat came in. It was bloody funny, walking into the Jewellers and having the following conversation:
Me: "I want an engagement ring"
Sales girl, eyes lighting up with the thought of a big sale: "Oh yes, we can help you there.."
Me: "BUT... I want one, that if I lose it.. it won't be a big deal"
Sales Girl, confused: "What? Why would it get lost? How? Huh?"
Me: "Well, I'm going to be on a boat for a few days, carrying the ring with me"
Girl: "uhhh, wha? Isn't there somewhere on the boat you can put it that's safe? Like a lockbox or safe??"
Me: "No... not that kind of boat. These boats eat small things like a ring, and if the boat sinks, I don't want to have to swim after it... So I want something nice.. but ok if it gets lost"
Girl: "uhhhh.. what type of boat IS this?"
Carried the ring down, paranoid the entire time it would fall out of my bag and get packed into a spinnaker or something. Had nightmares of launching the kite and seeing the ringbox go flying off into Bass Straight. All went well though, made it down and put together the sign in the photos as we were coming up the Derwent.
Rum followed, in vast quantities.
For the Hero, we hadn't all sailed together until ~3 months ago. The first time that the entire crew had sailed together was on the day of the race, so likewise, we were pretty chuffed with the result in our division. We slacked off on the last day - we really should have had you guys over the line :)/>, but we got a bit lazy that morning and through the day. Majority of the crew were on their first Hobart... I've found that the sight of Tasman Island makes people relax and think that they've already finished.
It's quite impressive to see two 36ft boats beating boats that were much bigger! Congrats on your first Hobart, I hope you come back this year. What exactly happened to get the penalty time? Missed radio scheds was what we heard?
Edit: Nice Video. 1:03 - We were just on the other side of that stupid fucking spectator boat. They were well inside the marked racing channel. We came very close to being pushed out of the course because of those fuckwits blocking everyone. They copped a mouthful from us and several other boats.

you need to be approx 3x longer to get any traction there.
Skipper on the hero was certainly happy...

Glad you liked the vid - I had to include some footage of that wuckfit that cruised into the course after the start.
Capt Gumby - I only followed the plots for the 1st time a few days ago, and noticed we only passed you guys, and a lot of others near the end. Everyone taking their foot of the gas at sight of land..??
One thing I couldnt figure was why everyone turned right at Tasman Is into that bay - DJ & I looked at it and thought "no way!" Left has to be better, even though it means more hours of bashing into it. Maybe when tired you perceive that right turn as heading to Hobart & getting out of the bashing on the nose..?? I think we passed 5 or 6 boats heading up storm bay in a few hours.
Glad you guys had a good one, I'll let you know when we get TWU back on the war path

If you are doing hamo this year remember that the Brisbane to Kepple race is on just before it and if you need crew let us know. The last few years we have had 3 x 36's doing the race.

We made every sked - But had to use the sat phone & VHF after we "nearly sank" - All electrics gone. Rule requires you MUST use HF. I believe the rule has it's genesis in the "3x longer" incident a few Hobarts back. Ill bight my tongue now.
Poods.. I don't know any details about your situation, but my superficial reading of the SI's says you were dudded:
40.7 All boats shall report their positions in
accordance with SI 41. Failure to comply on HF radio without reasonable cause will result in the
imposition of a penalty as below at the discretion of the race committee having regard to the circumstances
(amends RRS 60.2)
Surely flooding and dead electrics are 'reasonable cause'.. and as you say, you didn't miss any skeds.
Like I said.. need to be ~100ft, then you're off... ref. the start line incident.

put this in perspective..............the Farr 40 molds are available for free...........Fred Eaton chain sawed the molds for his C Cats after no takers at zero $...........all part of the inevitable slide to dinghy oblivion of racing.........other than in Europe, no one cares anymore. The moulds for the Sydney 36 pocket rocket are up for grabs. They can be yours for little over $5K.......
