Of course preference will be given to boats racing SASC S30 Cups.

Philc, understand that 2Xcess is weighed but not measured. Each time I offer your owner the chance to be measured he is unwilling to be part of the activity. YV/AMS stipulates that the owner be involved and in Vic they would charge $40 per hour. How about you chaps enter the SASC S30 series? In any case come over to RANSA when we weigh and measure and get 2Xcess done.

Super30 Gold Cup 14 races (3 discards)

As in previous years, entry in the Super30 Cup gives automatic entry to Gold Cup series.
Gold, Silver and Bronze medal winners from both Cup series are eligible for the SASC Club Championship.

First pointscore race for Super30 Cup and Gold Cup is Saturday 17 September.

Scoring will be done using TopYacht, as will the PHS handicapping.
(As per SASC General SIs, please advise any modifications that may have been done since last series)

Racing will also be scored using AMS and SMS for those yachts that have current certificates.

Compulsory Race Briefings are on at SASC this week on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th at 7:30pm. Hope to see lots of S30 skippers and/or crew!

NSW Maritime will be there to talk about their requirements, and otherwise there will be talk about changes to SIs and courses for this season, and plenty of time for a beverage afterwards!

As for the last couple of years, all SASC entrants will need to attend the briefing at SASC, or a briefing at MHYC, RSYS or other club.

Is it possible for boats to get SMS measurements done while we are doing AMS or are different measurers required
Just a thought cause there might be a broader net to cast here

If you have AMS measurements you can get an SMS, there are a few more measurements taken for AMS but both systems use the same input spreadsheet

and you'll find that it's the nsw S measurer that will be doing the A measuring !

WHAT the issue is here is that the two ( that were the same once, gen1 sms was ams) are now deliberately on a different number range so they can't be mixed,
i.e. SMS .880 is not the same as AMS .880

at the time of the change the .880 sportsboats converted to around SMS .815

as SASC is using AMS, the sms sportsboats will need an AMS number if they want to compete outside of PHS
there is a precedent from one of the other states where a sportsboat has an AMS number

sportsboats at SASC will arguably need an AMS tcf from YVic, even if its semi-official

SASC will run pointscores for both AMS and SMS within the S30 this year.
Misunderstanding by club last year scored them together.

My error in not spelling out measure/weigh day for AMS and SMS will happen around season start.

Still need a few more boats to commit before its a viable day for everyone.

Raced out of Mooloolaba to Cat 2 IRC (and PHRF), this Flying Tiger is just about as well equipped as is possible. PM me for owners number if interested!

What is the story? Anyone here know what went on?

What happened? Like lemmings off a cliff, that’s what happened.

Clearly few paid much attention to the SI’s. They were explicit that the start for Div 2 would happen as soon as possible after the start of Div 1. So, Div 1 gun goes, and they are away bang on 1000 (Shoulda seen that Kerr40 go - faark me..) Clearly, many thought starting gun for Div 1, signalled the start sequence for Div 2. (which happens in plenty of regattas BTW). However, the Div 2 flag had NOT gone up on the start boat. The Div 2 starting sequence had not actually commenced.

It just so happened that the RC hoisted the Div 2 flag and blew the horn, right on what would have been the 1-minute warning signal, SHOULD the start have been five minutes after Div 1 had departed. So all the lemmings lined up in the frisky 20 knots of west and went hell for leather at the line thinking it was 60 seconds to go.

I had started my countdown when the flag had gone up (5 minutes) and we were lolling around towards the back thinking we have four minutes to go, and thought, ‘hang on, all these buggers are going for the line, what’s going on here?” As 90% of the fleet had gone, it was a fair (but stupid) assumption that they were all correct, and we’d be out the door if we didn't go too. You look around and see virtually no one else behind you, excpet the few mulit hulls which were set to start after, and think "bugger it, we better go".

Five and a half hours later, we find out we should have erred on the side of caution – as three or four boats did. Lesson to all – read you SI’s CLEARLY prior to the commencement of the race. Good blast up the coast, too tight to hold a kite, so two sail reach. Beast of a trip home. Great race that Lion Island trip - should be a few more of them over the season.

There wasn't one, that we heard anyway. (Didn't have a hand held in the cockpit, but radio was on downstairs).

I thought they could have, should have signalled a general recall, but how do you recall a race that hadn't started?

In hindsight, the RC perhaps should not have blown ANY horns within five minutes of Div 1 departing. As I said, lesson to all involved in the 'cruise' up to Lion Island.

but even easier you Postpone or Abandon

before the 5 min, AP & 1 sound

after you set your watch, easy too, you just abandon, flag 'N', optional 3 sounds, race had started technically

at Starters discretion, may have opened the door to howling from the correct starters tho

next question is would they have come back!

and yeah look for the 4 & 1 Prep flag cycle next time, that would have confirmed

We started 10-15 secs after main bunch, did not see #2 flag, (div. warning flag, to be taken down at start) but there was a #6 flag flying at the stern. ???

The Div 2 flag DID go up at approximately 1004 (leading the herd to figure it was the one minute horn, prior to race start at 1005) - is my best guess at what transpired.

Yes GS, they should have AP'd immediately following the start of DIV 1. THEN gone into sequence on the drop of the AP.

It's no excuse, but the wind was whooping in around Watson Bay 20-25 gusting 30 - with a lively downhill start so a bit on on most of the boats I expect. It really was a herd mentality for sure.

WHAT the issue is here is that the two ( that were the same once, gen1 sms was ams) are now deliberately on a different number range so they can't be mixed,
i.e. SMS .880 is not the same as AMS .880

at the time of the change the .880 sportsboats converted to around SMS .815

as SASC is using AMS, the sms sportsboats will need an AMS number if they want to compete outside of PHS
there is a precedent from one of the other states where a sportsboat has an AMS number

sportsboats at SASC will arguably need an AMS tcf from YVic, even if its semi-official

I wanted an AMS rating so I could race mixed fleet here at home while retaining my SMS rating for ASBA events. YV flat out said no way. I had a sportsboat so SMS was all I could have.

Let me know how you go with this. I have sailed no weekly pennant races in the T7 in Hobart as I'm not going to sail with the PHS shitters.

the issue here was avoided by the clubs intention to conduct SMS & AMS racing.

bit of a shame that it resulted in splitting up the fleet, unless you have strong numbers in both of course
otherwise they are still combined

as there is both an Elliot 7 and a 770 with a AMS rating it seems maybe they are mutually exclusive ?, get your club to write them requesting one for club events only ???????

Great race on Saturday for the first of the SASC Super 30 Series. As expected the light conditions made it a benefit for the Tigers in terms line honors with Tigers 1,2 &3 ahead of a close bunch of “Tasty” , the casual entry “So What “ and a fourth Tiger, “Flying Brandy” only seconds apart.
Super result for Marco Tapia and his crew on FT10 “ Flying Brandy” to take first on PHS by 3 mins . The surprise was the second and third placing of the Young 88, “Agent 88” and the Sydney 32 “ Larrikin”. The very generous handicaps will make these guys hard to beat when the wind blows a bit harder.
As usual the Taste Machine got a great start and made the most of the fresh breeze just heading the pack of hunting Tigers,” Balmain Tiger” , “Shere Khan” , “Tigger” and “ Flying Brandy” to the first mark. “ Merlin” , “Monkey Magic” and “Rapid Transit” were also in the bunch . With the breeze still holding on the Green Kite on “Tasty” could not be run down in the leg to Garden Island via Shark Mark. “Rapid Transit” made the most of the breeze to work their way into 3rd place as they rounded into Rose Bay but going high to keep their speed was always going to end in tears as they fell into the inevitable hole under the ladies college. “Monkey Magic” the trap less Magic 25 was also looking good at this stage and was keeping the Tigers honest. As the pressure begun to ease the Tigers begun to take control, with Shere Khan closing in the second work and easily taking Tasty on the second run. Balmain Tiger and Tigger had a neck and neck battle as they also closed on Tasty who Gybed out in search of more pressure only to loose several places by the time they begun the third work back to the Sow and Pigs.
“So What “ kept the bunch of Tigers honest for most of the day, being able to plane in the light conditions and running surprisingly deep and “ Flying Brandy” would just not go away.
The last downwind leg saw “Shere Khan” consolidate its lead to about 2 mins with “Balmain Tiger” leading “Tigger”,” Flying Brandy” and “So What” into the bottom mark for the last time. A poor kite drop by “So What” put an end to their chance of glory while “Tigger” and “Flying Brandy” argued about the quality of each others mark roundings. Meanwhile Balmain Tiger was able to sail away in a forlorn chase of Shere Khan only to fall short by 2 minutes and some change. Congratulations to the Shere Khan team, super effort.
I have no doubt the results will be different in different wind ranges but with 6 Tigers out there for the series and a couple more planning to make guest appearances there should be some great racing this year at the pointy end of the field and no doubt some very competitive performances by the PHS competitors in the bulk of the field. Keep and eye out for Bill Ure in Hickup, he is carrying a Kite this year and with a very generous handicap for this speed machine, his fifth this week will not be his worst result for the year.

Pretty accurate summary of the race; a perfect day for the FT10s, and a cracking start to the Amateurs Super30 series by any account.
Once Shere Khan got by us they sailed really well and deserved their win. I think BT was lucky to hang on to be within 3 minutes at the finish.

My personal congrats go to Ten8ious, the newest FT10 on Sydney Harbour. Its a credit to MJ to throw his boat into such a competitive fleet and have a go.

The Sydney FT fleet have a few owners who could take note and get their boat racing in the best game in town. You know who you are......

Don't be too harsh on boats like Agent88 (listed in SMH results as Ancient88!) and Larrikin....they are the heart and soul of the Super30 fleet; its not just about the drag boats.

Guys... I did not mean to be hard on Agent 88 and Larrikin, just pointing out that these guys and many more back in the body of the fleet will be even harder to beat when the wind suites them. 5 to 8 Knots is Tiger territory and we need to take advantage of those conditions , when the 15 to 20 knots come on, we can have lots of fun but not much cream...

Actually Bryce drove last weekend and he did a great job, I did give him plenty of encouragement , not that he took any notice, Clouds did a great job of mostly putting us in the right place. The photo of us going behind Krackers was to show where we started... not really Kracks was well and truely in it in the early stages but did not appreciate the fall in pressure , same for Merlin.

The Super 30 fleet is now very interesting with lots of variety , the wind and wind angles will determine many of the races but in a long series that's fine , can't wait to have Zippier and Jet back, "So What? " showed what a light weight flyer can do in 7 to 10 knots, the rest of us keep plugging , they get up and boogie.

Have a great race next week for the Long Series, will see you all after the Heaven Can Wait... anyone who wants to contribute to this great charity event, do a search on Heaven Can Wait, Bryce and I will be on the Spider 22... SASC Super 30 Sat Oct 8 For those who could not be there, by one who did not get much chance to look behind. Breeze from the SE at around 12 Knots for the Start. Line was slightly skewed to favour the Boat end, the overexcited fleet of 23 boats were generally early leaving a great starting opportunity at the boat which Balmain Tiger ( BT ) close to boat and Rapid Transit slightly below shared with glee all over their faces. The clean air gave BT the opportunity to cross all the fleet on the first two tacks but was closely followed by Zippier, Very Tasty , Monkey Magic, Hickup, Shere Khan and Tigger. I am sure there were many more in the mix on that first Leg but did not have time to look around with Very Tasty closing and eventually taking the lead with an adept use of Shark Island to get the lift to the first mark 20 seconds ahead of BT and Zippier. Zippier and Tasty went high to set up their Kite Runs to Kirribilli while BT popped the Kite early and had to struggle to stay off Shark Island , particularly when the Kite Halyard let go at the most inopportune time.

Zippier rounded Kirribilli first and by this time had been almost joined by Jet. BT rounded inside of Tasty with a delayed drop but Tasty’s better gear handling out of the mark got them away from the mark fist, of the group which included Shere Khan, Tigger and Monkey Magic which would not lie down and kept pushing all day. Flying Brandy was not far behind showing their ever improving skills , Ten8ious were also hanging in showing that they are starting to work out their new boat.

The Shark Island light house rounding was interesting with Shere Khan pushing up on Tasty who in turn almost put BT on to the Light House reef, I swear there was only 1 Metre below the boat as I glanced down and could count the oysters . Good lesson , keep well clear of that light house. The Shark Mark saw the 5 leaders within a few boat lengths of one another. The run to Chowder Bay saw Shere Khan pick up her heels sailing past BT and closing very close to Very Tasty but Zippier and Jet got a small break. The work back to Shark Mark saw the front of the fleet close up to the point where BT earned a penalty in a Port / Starboard issue close bye the Island. Shere Khan got passed Very Tasty before the Shark Mark and really picked up her skirts with a great run to Neutral Bay. BT was now in a close race with Tigger and Monkey Magic not far behind. The work to Pots Point in a breeze building to 14 knots saw Shere Khan close on Jet and Zippier and further open the gap on Very Tasty , while Tigger passed BT and both closed on Tasty. The kite run back to Neutral Bay saw a great duel between Tigger and Tasty ( Read this as Tasty made sure Tigger could not get bye ) which gave BT the chance to use as couple of good blasts to close up on both leaving a close run for the three to fight for 4th to 6th placings. In the end Tigger decided to try the Garden Island route into the finish. BT and Tasty went Left and took out almost a minute on Tigger , weird but another good lesson.

So it was Zippier First home but only 48 seconds ahead of Shere Khan who was almost a minute ahead of Jet in third place. Very Tasty were 25 seconds ahead of BT who were 47 seconds ahead of Tigger and Monkey Magic a further 1.5 minutes behind a further 1.5 mins ahead of Flying Brandy.
The light to medium conditions saw the front runners take most of the Handicap Glory, 1st to Rod Gibbs and his crew on Shere Khan , Second to the ever present Very Tasty and third to that Magic 25 that would not go away , well done John and Crew. Big improver from my vantage point was Ten8ious who got 8th on handicap and 12th across the line. Watch out for these guys and my tip from last race Hickup got a 5th. These guys will be on the podium soon. The front of the fleet saw some very close racing in a 5 Kite Run race, just goes to show how team work and picking the sides can make a huge difference.

That said, I know that a few boats are yet to front including;

Pistol Dawn; undergoing major refit and should be up for R3
Blue Peter; owner OS and will be back for R3 or R4
Sabre; plan was for a casual entry but have not seen entry as yet.
Quikstix; has always planned to enter.

Have an enquiry from prospective SB3 owner, which may lead to more players still.

I'm pretty chuffed with fleet as it stands and cannot wait for a significant milestone of 30 boats on the line together!

For a chap that reckons he had little time to look about you have reported the race sweetly.

Cracker day for the Gold Cup fleet; shortish start line and plenty of snakes and ladders on every beat.

Great racing between front running boats, and from each glance I had back to the fleet it looked v v busy in the mid fleet.

Unfortunate that breeze began to fade later in the day which gifted results to early finishers.

A glance through corrected times suggests that TopYacht is doing a solid job.....

And no problem with BT pushing the cross; credit to you for taking turns promptly.

How expereinced are the crew?

Couple of gratuitous comments:
For light weather, a small crew (but very busy crew) and a bit of pre tack planning they should be able to figure it out so the boat does not come to a complete halt.

Runners: in the light stuff with the main centred and on hard do they need to get to hung up about runners?. It should be possible to loosely trim the leeward runner pre tack. Same with the main being centred and on before the tack.
Heady: no option but to trim whilst tacking (as usual).
Traveller: centre pre tack? Eae or pull up after the tack.
Main: trim pre tack so the mast doesn't fall down if both runners eased at the same time.
Keel: ease to center pre tack then wind up post tack.

Will be fun watching them get to grips with a complex boat as the season progresses.

i'm sorry guys but have to call this
how can you expect a boat that is fairly complex and so new to the owner to be easy to sail fast all the time. and it is a hard boat to sail 3 up, having done it already (note evil's pic). the keel doesn't self centre very easily at all, takes what seems like a fair while for it to come close to centre and by then you loose a lot of speed (as phil stated). i wasn't onboard this weekend due to food poisoning (from seafood at wedding on fri night ). its not the easiest boat to sail round the cans..
anyway, it will be interesting to see how the boat goes as we get used to it.
