What can I say youngstar you have really captured the close racing that I tried to verbalise even made BT look good. Super job once again, that's racing in Sydney Harbour

Another panoramic shot of racing on Sydney harbour captured by SASC's roving photographer (JS) from Bradleys Head

nice report kelly....it's starting to sound like yer typical Sydney/Hobart media release.

rumour has it that Youngstars success was due to the expert strategy and tactics called by young Will the 10 yr old opti sailor who is 12 years old when he's talking about girls and was often calling instruction from the nav table....time and again he made the faster boats aware that there was a correct way to sail Sydney harbour and an incorrect way to sail Sydney harbour.

"They are on the wrong side of the course upwind and they gybe too much downwind" he said when interviewed after the race

Well done young Will....we know there will many more podiums for such a talent. Finally Youngstar actually has a young star. :)

where are the pics?

no dogsballs were harmed in the making of this parody

The Doc thinks its only heat rash....it should go away
but I am worried it could have something to do with that old musty stained cushion that Gaz keeps below.
Thanks Simon for a great effort

I was on starboard - see a RSYS Div 1 boat bearing away behind me on port, but at the last moment she turns back into me - rides up over the rail and my boom gets caught on his forestay so we do the dance for 30 secs or so and then they break free and it's time to head back for a rum or three...

Bit of a worry with the bow of a 38 footer a few inches from your nose! I was amazed at how it just severed the toe rail.

Still she is repairable, just don't know how long it will take - big bummer when I was leading the Long series..with four of us very close on points.

One thing I will say is in a busy harbour on a gusty day it is surely more sensible to do big early ducks, rather than trying to shave the stern of right of way boats - anything goes wrong and you've ruined two boats' day.

Well done Young Star. Interesting day out there. I was surprised when they sent us to Manly given the grey skies but ended up a relatively quick race

The congrats should go to Jet for a great scratch result. On corrected there was only 42 secs in it and you would have got the HCP as well.

Jet and the Taste were so far out........ I couldnt get a snap !

(just a few photos soon - we were busy !)

Ps I liked the "ballast" you had evenly balanced on your wings when you left the Watto Bay Hotel the other Sunday ! If only I had a camera at the time :P

Yeah saw and heard that, was a big hit, we were on our way out to play F40's and were not far away. Pity after all the work you did to the boat.

Bummer! So if you are looking for a sail in the SHR, we've finally got around to entering Esprit in a Super 30 event, so we can get a good smacking and learn how much we have to learn. But we've had a few crew drop out for the Saturday, so Peter, you, your crew or any other super 30 event aware folk listening are welcome to join us. http://esprit.wiltel.org . We rate 0.889 under AMS and hope to pick up a bit more after being weighed yesterday, so we have a little on handicap and hope not to be last on the water also.

Actually I have used gaffer and spreader patches...see attached. Not sure it is a good idea to test it in a race though!

And thanks Rawhide and Greg for your posts! How was the F40 versus the Sydney 38?

Greg I was already doing this weekend on a classic (Tanami) rather than Torquil- so not available, but thanks for the offer!

I should add that I have found out that just as they were bearing away behind me their steering exploded - a 5/16" bottlescrew under the quadrant sheered off and they lost all steering.

What odds that it happen exactly then? A few seconds earlier she may have taken out the rig and sunk me, a few seconds later she would have missed me completely.

So all in the hands of insurance now - no questions at the hearing tomorrow night as to blame.

P,

Dont even think of dipping out of the remaining couple of races in the season, just because you've got a massive gaping hole in the side of Torquil (& which was completely not you fault).

There are probably those (ie read me) that might like to see you a bit further down the ladder at the moment; BUT NOT UNDER THESE CIRCUMSTANCES !

I'm not much good with boat repair materials, but I'm a fairly dab hand with form ply, reo, and concrete. So get onto it and get her fixed............ or you'll find her ready........... but cement rendered ! (paint is pushing it !)

See you on the track on the 17th & 24th and good luck with everything.

Was an almighty bang - we were just to windward and saw the whole thing. glad all are OK

Thought there must have been something going on because the guys on Equiknox are not usually aggressive sailors and they play by the rules. Was very surprised when it happened.

So now Very Tasty has been taken out as well - sad end to a great season.

Update on Torquil is I am awaiting assessor - hopefully start repair next week - 159 hours estimated, so may be a while before she's back! Luckily no other delamination - damage is contained.

Good luck to Youngstar and Hotspur on Saturday.

Congrats to GP26 Rapid Transit for the double.
A close race and you guys extended well on those seemingly patchy downhill puffs. (A little more pressure would have suited us).
Season grand final next week will be an interesting one !

All Super 30 competitors should have got an email today telling them that past-Commodore Vic Dibben has donated a prize for Saturday's last race of the season - a model boat and a gift voucher - but you have to come back to SASC to be eligible.

Regardless of that I would like to see as many of you as possible for a beverage after the race.

Hopefully Torquil is being assessed as I post and the repair can start immediately.

Good luck on Saturday and hopefully see you at SASC afterwards - I am sailing in the Classics fleet so will keep an eye out.

We were off Palm Beach on Sunday in the Melges 32's. 8 boats, 20 to 25 knots gusting higher, we peaked at 20 knots boat speed down a wave. Whilst the beats were a test the rides were as good as you get in these boats. 3 blown spinnakers and anyone of three boats could have won the Nationals in the last race. 5 different boats won races.
We only had one broach which was pretty good going in the conditions and that was in the first race where us Lake sailors were still finding our feet in a 2 metre swell.

forgot to mention
first tiger on scratch (one drop) gets a very large bottle of rum (from Tigger:-autographed )and their bottom cleaned by the crew of their choice
bring it bitches!

so the tally as it stands!

Please note: race 11 is omitted from the tally as there was only one tiger on the course, namely us,
and while I'd like to give everyone 7 points for a DNC it's possibly not the fairest thing to do considering you were all doing the states

Share Khan 1 1 (7R)1 2 1 7R 3 1 1 x 1 1 20

Tigger (3) 3 1 2 3 3 1 1 2 2 x 2 2 22

Brandy (4) 4 2 3 1 2 2 4 3 3 x 4 3 31

Balmain Tiger 2 2 3 4 4 5 4 2 4 (7C)x 3 7C 40

Sophia 5 (7C)4 5 5 4 5 7C 7C 7C x 7C 7C 58

Ten8cious 6 5 5 6 (7C)7C 3 7C 7C 7C x 7C 7C 67

So it all comes down to the last race
see you in the morning!

bad luck to oldstar a great surging run to the finish fell just short Posted Image
tasty in ER still gets the third
if we can only work out how to get a rating of 0.982 for the start of next season we'll be in with a shot

oh and SK got the rum tonight, well done
tigger was close but not not close enough today, too much bad luck and not enough making our own luck

thanks all for sharing a top time in a great fleet in a great place
Till next year!

Top shot though the main trim looks pretty ordinary....
Looking like it was the gust of the day. Our PB for the day was around 13.4 IIRC

Nothing says Rock Star like a - UMMM - model boat - well done Jet crew. We really do shine when there is all to play for!! If only there was a boat on offer every week we may have done a little better in the series.

You will be pleased to know that the skipper and I cleaned the bottom of Shear Khan last week (badly needed it - see photo below) - now whiter than white and even faster for the winter series.

Most of the SYD Farr30's have migrated out of Sydney. London Calling left a few years back to SA - never to be heard of again. Optimum 1 (ex Kato) went to Tas. Optimum 2 went to Geelong in March. Yandoo went to Singapore around a year ago. Clandestine got smashed by an out of control Rosman Ferry at Noakes. What ever happened to the Bitter and Twisted lads? 2-Excess - if still called that sails up MH way. Awarua?? Tow Truck/Don't Tell Mum/whatever-it's-called-now - sailing with another fleet. That's about it. Shame, as you say - one of the GREAT super30 boats and well sailed, would still be WAY up the pointy end of the S30 fleet.

Richie
Clandestine is now on a mooring in Watsons Bay sitting infront of my club with a For Sale sign on it
Dont know how good the repair was.
We still drool at it..Farr 30 has got to be the best boat(leaving skiffs aside)that Ive ever sailed.
Fast in the light, and stiff in a blow

I like the look of the Soto 30 on their website...should be very hard to beat.
Just hope its got a tall enough rig,and not too much lead on it.

And do the Chinese sail the same as they drive cars?

Anyone know more about the Clandestine incident? How extensive was the damage? Did the boat stay afloat? Rig damaged? Any idea who did the repairs? My apologies for hijacking the thread!

It was a 'fixable right off'. Still be a cool club racer. Would unlikely win a one design regatta. It didn't sink, if that's the question.
