As the weather gets tricky, my money is on Stan Honey to help the LOYAL guys a lot. What he did on the Round Britain leg of the VOR was astounding. One could have waterskied around Britain without a problem, there was never more than 8k of wind, and he beat the Farr boats boat-for-boat with that JuanK heavy air tank.

It'll be fun to watch how this turns out.

For me this has been terrific cos Spike is in 26 overall (Div 2 IRC 7) while the godson on Last Tango is 29 (Div 2 Orc 7). From the tracker they must have been within sight of each other all race.

Crapola .... Minerva looks like she has problem and with only 20 odd nms to go. She's slowed down to 3.5 knots and has been caught up and overtaken by a bunch of other boats she had been well clear of. Given her position amongst the other boats its not as if she might have fallen into a hole.

She has been reported under 4 knots SOG since early this morning, but the position reports are still progressing.
The Southerly sea breeze is in now, so we will be heading up to town soon to welcome the Burgee in.
I think they fell into a hole in the middle of the night around Tasman Island, a common enough story around here.

While Big Spike Burgee was on tour, the Small Spike did the Marion-Bermuda Race, the delivery back to Newport and Pawtuxet, was flown on the winning R Boat "Lady Van" in the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival's regatta (pics posted a few months back by BoomBoomVaroom), and has been aboard a CM1200 during a few regattas at the end of the season. It will be flown during the upcoming Hot Rum winter series starting next weekend, and more races in 2012.

Anyone interested in getting the JPG graphic file used for both Big Spike and Small Spike so they can get a local one made for their use, can pm me with their email address. Thanks to Sonadora for the artwork

Womby and Olaf - this is one friggen awesome picture!! It inspires smiles, goosebumps and a sense of pride that we are all part of pretty special commuity.

Even though I've already signed it, I'll be in Key West Race Week during 17-22 Jan 2012, and I am sure we could honorably fly the Spike burgee if it were back in the states then. It is pretty damn cool it did the Sydney-Hobart race.

This has been such a cool way to ``put a little Spike in our world`. The smaller burgees that WHL mentioned, are a great way to continue the idea. We can get photos of smaller SB`s in various regattas, series and offshore races, while preserving the larger one shown here, that started being signed at the wake. The one we flew to Bermuda, and in the R boat regatta in Port Townsend was a good size and easy to transport. Just my two cents : )

Gidday Guys.

It's been mental since the race and getting back to Sydney but I have been meaning to drop in here.

Thanks for the opportunity to carry the flag during the Hobart Race. It was a pleasure to meet Womby and Olaf. Many of our crew are Anarchists and it was great to help out.

I didn't fly the burgee on the backstay during the race, I was terrified that the 30 knot winds, spray and rain would clean it very effectively. We took some photographs of the pennant rounding Cape Raoul, which I will post when I can get hold of them.

We sailed with 12 crew in the race and we called Spike our 13th man. The race was a typical Hobart - there were moments where you questioned why you were doing it and other times that were pure sailing nirvana. Spike would have enjoyed the challenges, the competition and the good humoured banter that you always have on a race boat.

A lot of people followed us during the race. I appreciate the messages of support we got here and elsewhere. The first half of the race for us was about hanging in there because uphill in the fresh isn't our strong suit. On the 3rd day when it went aft and light it was our time to shine and we had a real ripper. We were optimistic we could get a good result but it became clear long before we got to Tasman Island that there was going to be a park-up there on the last night.

The final day was spectacular with dozens of boats running across Storm Bay and storming up the Derwent. I learned a long time ago that the result in this race can depend on a lot of luck! We knew things hadn't gone our way, but it was a great way to finish.

Having Spike's Burgee on board served as a reminder to myself and many of the others how lucky we are to do these things. You have experiences that stay with you for life, the friendships you make are fantastic - the pub at Hobart is always full of people we've sailed with and against for years. The names on the flag reflect that same paradigm - the names, the memories, places. I couldn't think of a more appropriate way to honour someone who had a passion for boats and the sea.

I have two young daughters who love to come sailing with me. I love sharing the experience with them and I hope that it is something we can share for a long time. I can't imagine what the agony of losing a child would be like - but I hope that the journey of the Pennant and the fact that Spike has lived on and touched so many people will give you some solace Bob. In New Zealand we say "Kia Kaha" or be strong.

Thanks for the opportunity again. I hope to cross paths with you all again.

Last Sunday, we flew the small Spike that went to Bermuda and back off the runner of Raven, a CM1200... we're in English Bay waiting for the wind to fill in, which it did later at 10 to 15knots.

For the Australians .... boat on the left is Caprice of Huon on the right Kintail. Anyone old enough needs no intro re Caprice, Kintail not so well known but she too was built in Tassie of Huon Pine and has a number of Hobarts to her credit beginning in 1947. What a top couple of boats to share an anchorage with. Good people as well. Other than one other boat that appeared in the middle of the night and was gone before dawn just three boats. Bob Perry .... they may have rooted parts of Port Stephens itself old friend, but the islands are superb.

Burgee safe and sound at Wombat Manor, need to catch up with Matt , Leka not here until next week. Will send the SB on its way asap.

Caprice was just on a summer jaunt. Went back to Sydney a few days before us. She is, I hear, likely to go to Tassie later in the year. The CYC is doing a cruise in company that is aiming to link up with the timber boat festival and the Hobart club's round Tassie cruise. She was a fine sight setting sail for Sydney in the early morn. One very cool boat, as is Kintail who I believe will also be in Hobart for the TBF. I'm hoping a certain Womboat will also be in Hobart around that time so you better be prepared to repel boarders.

Yep, forgot its real name. Magic spot!!

Had a funny experience there years ago.

We arrived around New Years to find a large stink boat parked on the rocks @ the NE corner of the bay. Apparently they had taken delivery of the new boat a few days before Xmas and immediately headed for Broughton for a big family Xmas. Unfortunately the boat was delivered with only a tiny emergency anchor and some string! Of course it blew up on Xmas eve and up on the bricks she went.

A dodgy salvage team had repaired the bottom with sheets of plywood and built a makeshift ramp under her. The buzz around the anchorage (6 boats) was that the team planned to pull her off on the big tide early the next morning. Everyone was up early enjoying coffee in their cockpits ready for the show.

They had a big ass tow boat waiting just outside the entrance and a smaller fishing boat inside to do the pull and maneuver her out to the big one. High tide comes and the fishing boat eventually manages to pull her off with much smoke and orible scraping sounds. I had assumed they would maybe nose her up on to the sandy beach to check things out but no they head straight for the tow boat.

Everything seems fine while they hook her up until we spot a guy in the doorway swinging a bucked like a mad man. Surely they will beach her now I tell the wife and kids. After a quick confab with lots of expletives we watch in horror as they head off to Pt Stephens at full speed with now two madmen on buckets!! Needless to say they only got less than half way when she went down like a stone in very deep water.

The globe trotting Spike Burgee has now completed a circumnavigation, flown on thousands of offshore and coastal, cruising and racing miles while visiting numerous Cruising Anarchists, all of whom have signed the burgee. It's traveled from Vancouver and Victoria, across Canada and the USA to Adelaide, Sydney, Hobart, Aukland, and back via Eastern Canada, Newport RI, Ohio, Texas, San Francisco, Santa Cruz and Vancouver.

A couple of us CA'ers will be taking it on its final leg to Bob and Jill in the next couple of weeks.

Many thanks to everyone for participating in showing our respect and also for the contributions to the scholarship fund.

While the large burgee has been traveling, the prototype small burgee has crossed the Pacific, been to Bermuda and back, and been flown in dozens of PNW regattas.

Many thanks to "Prestige Flag" and Krista Larson in San Diego for their support producing high quality small Spike burgees and making it easy for everyone to fly their own "Spike".

I have no pics, strangely enough. But since mine was one of the first I got to see it in all its pristine glory. I'm glad it has some history on it now.

I have saved all the pics posted of the burgee being flown. I keep them in my Spike Collection folder. I'm not sure what I will do with them but in time I will think of something. I am going to hang the two big signed burgees from the lam beam that runs down the middle of the office.

Yes, it was great to look at all the familiar names on the burgee. There are also a lot of unfamiliar names too. Now both large, signed burgees are home and will be hung from the beam in my office I guess. Although it would be nice to have them down at a level where you could read them. I need to ponder the placement a while.
Many thanks to Kim Susan and WHL for bringing the burgee and coordinating this. Thanks also to Booms who sent down probably the very best smoked salmon I have ever had and I have had a lot of smoked salmon. Her cookies were nice and the chocolate she sent is amazing. I did a Jamie Oliver recipe for lunch, Jool's Favorite Beef Stew,, Tim provided a great bottle of Italian Mazi wine and we had Booms treats for desert. I wil not be eating any dinner tonnight.

It was a very pleasant day.

Bob, in all seriousness, I am proud & honored to be a small link in the chain of the Spike burgee movement around the globe when it passed thru my home here in Southern Maryland, and to have contributed a few dollars to the scholarship fund.

I'm not normally a sentimental sort, but I have to admit, sailing to Bermuda and back with WHL and Booms, and that Spike flying from the starboard spreader, was really, really special. Thanks for letting Sparky play.

It certainly has traveled and thanks again to the CA group for participating! It was a good couple of days of chat about boats, rigging, Sliver, half models, music, great company, great eats and BoomBoom's treats !! Too bad she was out racing "Round The County" - she missed it - all the more for us !

Yeah, it's fun to see sommany familiar names on it. Adele's name jumps right off the burgee. She's got some chutzpah. I really like the one where Spike is the 13th crewmember on the Syd-Hob race.
