I guess Stowe is still bobbing around, people continue to give him enough stuff to get by and he manages to lure in another young thing.

So it's off to Guyana? Away from the "yachties", lawyers and bill collectors.

Still amazed he can sail around NY harbor without being impounded.

Wednesday, 07 September 2011 Posted Image

After a year of boat living in the protected waters of New York Harbor, Soanya and I are feeling the call of the wild wide open sea again. We think our three year old son Darshen is ready to go too. When a storm wind blows between the buildings that line the waterfront, Darshen stands in the wind with his arms stretched out to the sides and shouts over and over again, “I love the breeze!” Soanya’s family is from Guyana and we have been thinking of sailing there for many reasons. We want to sail to a faraway place where we won’t tourists or “yachties.” We will leave NY be leaving NY and the cold North Atlantic and enter warmer waters and trade winds. As we sail into warm tropical winds we will make our landfall on a jungle coast and begin our exploration of Guyana’s rivers.

A friend of ours had to abandon his 90 ft. sailboat. As a result, he gave us all the gear like the anchor, chain, sails, rigging, turnbuckles, ropes and pulleys. This gift freed us up to imagine we could go to sea again. We have quite a few friends who have been telling us that they want to go with us when we go again. So we are already taking crew onboard and are interviewing others. Rachel has already moved on the schooner and more are coming.

Of course we will have to work on the schooner as we go. Seamanship comes first. As we explore the outer reaches of nature where few people go. We will share our story live as we did on our previous “longest non-stop continuous sea voyage in history.”

Go the Stowe!

As long as no one gets hurt (or pregnant again?), I find the tales of Reid (and the outrageously funny commentary provided by this group) hugely entertaining.

He is a scammer, a con artist and dishonest (I am pretty sure those allegations are true, and there may be more). But he is a character. And he has probably done less harm to the world than the average Wall Street banker.

I look forward to hearing more about his 'adventures' and following the play-by-play commentary provided here.

Hope Rachel is over 16.....but then I guess that none of that applies in international waters B)

Finally worked out who he reminds me of - a later day L Ron Hubbard, floating around on a ship full of "willing" acolytes. all he has to do is invent a religion!.

OK, let the mocking begin:

- who is Rachel and what is her interest in all this?
- it looks like the sails are still on the boom. Have they been there since he returned from his circumnavigation? Did he really leave them on when the hurricane went by?
- the hull of the boat looks a mess. Is it really bad structurally or just cosmetic?
- I am surprised that the boat was able to motor up and down the river. What's he doing to keep off the marine growth?

Oh good. I miss Wei®d.

I am also way into threesomes. Perhaps he will provide home videos for pay per play downloading.

"Of course we'll work on the schooner as we go." 'Cuz you haven't done anything since you came back except for the acquisition of free gear from a 90 footer and a free sailing dinghy! Seriously, good seamanship does come first, but do you know what comes before that? A well found vessel.

Will Rachel stand her watches? Or will they all be below ringing each others bell? We need intel on Rachel. Where's Regatta Dog when we need him? Pip?

how the hell did a felon drug smuggler get a passport?
convicted drug traffickers are denied entry in all Caribbean islands and Guyana too.. 'course entry will prove a cinch since he doesn't have to follow rules, he's special.
how he gets away with direct discharge (and gets lauded as a greenie activist!), still takes out large parties on broken down anne without even jackets for each passenger and not even six pack cert..etc etc etc....must be divine assistance. anyone else would have the marine patrol, coast guard, water police/sherrifs on his ass 24/7.
i forsee conflicts. Stowe isn't going to like this girl stealing his wheel halo in photo ops.

DAY ONE
40° 45' 21" north 73° 59' 11" west
Wind Calm before the storm.

God has smiled on me again and given me a gift of youth. I will thank God and take this gift with me on a journey of discovery. For both the youth and me.
I will feel the youth as I have felt youth in the past. Upon the sea, far from help, I will feel youth completely and youth will feel me flow through youth.
The South Seas are calling again and I will continue to be at one with myself, whenever youth is busy. The ship, my beautiful ship is strong and ready to carry my new found youth and me
along with my youth of the past and the fruit of my labors. God, Buddha and the great Pumpkin have blessed me again and are with me on my voyage to keep me focused.
But most of all I will focus on my new youth

really ?

not sure i understand your question but:
yeah, really. they've spent trillions of bucks cleaning up the hudson river, (it could be a protected area for all i know) and the U.S. is super strict about having a holding tank. my question is literal, not necessarily judgemental: 'how does he get away with it?'

when i sailed in the U.S. and lived aboard at anchor (maybe 6 years altogether), i was hassled nonstop by the authorities. i had to retrofit and put in a holding tank on one boat, on another i wasted precious space carrying a porta potty for show, i actually bucket and chucked it.
perhaps you were not aware that Stowe was honored as an enviromental activist by his sheeple who gave him an award from one of their dicey 501s ironically named after one of his ex wives.
i got a $60 ticket one time from some bubba with a badge for speeding in a row boat with a 2 hp tohatsu FFS..yet Stowe flaunts his floating trash barge and seems not only untouchable but you tell me..how many convicted drug traffickers get escorted welcomes from the coast guard? the whole story is preposterous and it just goes to show what favors can be pulled in when you 'know' the right people i guess?
his huffington post 'travel' blog has not had a single comment in over a year, yet he it is still being published because the editor must be his pal. how many talented kids are out there that actually do travel and write blogs could do a better job?
none of it makes any sense.

Surely you've been here long enough to know that mocking is part of the culture here, and in the sailing world in general. We can call the Editor a cunt knuckle and tell Clean that his OTWA productions are the result of a blind guy who has Parkinson's, turrets and showed up a half hour after the methadone clinic closed. Nothing says I *ever* have to 'fit in' with every aspect of the culture here. Nothing.

I see it as different levels of mocking. Sure, I poke fun at my friends, to their face. I'll accept it to my face from my friends. The distinction here is intent and motive. I'll do it because it's not building me up by tearing them down.

I see that as quite different then spending a lot of energy mocking someone I don't know. It does me no good, serves no purpose for me.

For. Me.

If you or someone else wants to, have at it.

As for me, I spend my energy on other things.

See the difference?

And hard enough, thank you. No reason to sharpen my edge on someone I don't know.

I'm interested in the story, hence my following it. I just won't waste my time (I consider it a waste for me -- that doesn't mean it doesn't entertain others) mocking him.

There are plenty of weird/insane/oddballs in the world. Some of them are what make this place interesting.

Mocking them for being weird serves no purpose for me.

Dawg, however, is a stand up guy.

HTFU, Stephan

I poked fun at him via e-mail and poked fun at his shore team in person. He's well loved, has some incredibly good friends, and Soanya is not the idiot some make her out to be. She's no Abby Sunderland, but she's no naive idiot attention whore either; or not that....either.

I, like most of the other idiots here, spend a lot of time sailing and no one here, except for maybe Espo, lauds their talents publicly.

If one wants to be a part of the sailing fraternity (which I am currently pledging) , he/she should do something other than nautical pole sitting.

I appreciate your position, Blackjenner. I have a soft spot in my heart for Reid Stowe as well. But when sponsorship dollars for sailing ventures are so hard to come by, this bull shit "Mars Mission" fucks the rest of the pooches' dollars.

Night, mate. Check his website and toss it over a bit.

Sorry I used the word "idiot" so much. Makes me feel normal.

What happened to the book, the movie, the motivational speaking tours, the massively valauble art collection stored in the barn, the Hovian spin machine ??

Please dont tell me his Hovian hopes and plans have been DARSHED !

Tired of the Mirth and thirsting for another free birth to freeload from ?

I was waiting for the tshirt, but it looks like the WORM has turned.

A remote jungle coastline of guyana (will we see the same tree in the background of this photo ?)

Out of the reaches of home schooling authorities, lawyers, parents, but still in range of dysentry and cholera and malaria, and home birth advice by radio....

Um what about the high infant mortality rate, and low life expectancy ?

Im sure the natives will be enormously impressed at his ability to invert his internal organs while drawing with excrement on scraps of cloth...

What an ambassador this man is. Just dont drink the koolaid people..

Anyway, I get the resentment on the part of some. I also understand, all too well, the path of making this guy a hobby. I've seen the websites mocking him to no end but, ya know, I don't know if he cares.

He's living some part of some dream that is his. So he drifted/sailed for 1000 days around the oceans of the world, navigating a heart in one ocean with his positions and a whale in another. He did that in a boat of his own creation. Slow and odd that his trip may have been, he did, apparently sail (slowly) at sea for a thousand days.

He's apparently in the company of a beautiful wife and a cute little kid, who he seems, from what I've read, to love very much.

Yeah, he's a weirdo to many, and he rubs some folks the wrong way. He's an artist and his art isn't to everyone's taste. I've had a lot of artist friends in my time and, I'll tell you, I've spent more than one moment looking at them a little sideways and accepting that their art is not quite my cup of tea, if not downright weird. And to that I say, "so what. it's their art. I don't have to like it."

Oh, I get what you are saying, especially him getting the attention/dollars that some of us think we deserve. It's kind of like that douche in high school or college who gets all the girls when all we one is one, maybe two. I mean, we aren't greedy. :)

It's tough when we know we are talented, deserving, and some other guy gets the promotion/sponsorship/role. There have been times in my life when I haven't gotten that promotion. That hurt. I auditioned and didn't get the role I was perfect for, dammit. That was hard too. But other times, I've had my day in the sun, gotten some attention I damn well deserved, and I'll be happy with that.

Back to the original point, I see no benefit to me, or anyone else in spending any real energy mocking the man.

He seems to be happy. He's sailed the seas of the world.

That's more than some.

Reid Stowe is a consumate con man and a charlatan. That is why we make fun of him. He sold the unsuspecting public a bill of false goods about his scientifically important Mars Analagous mission which was a bunch of baloney, to con money and supplies out of naive non-sailors. His so called "record" is the equivalent of nautical pole sitting, as Regatta Dog has already pointed out.

I have no argument with anything you say above. Nothing in my words defends the man because that isn't what I'm doing. My only point in responding earlier is I'm not interested in spending any time mocking him. That was it. My only point.

Others are entitled to so do. They don't need my permission or agreement to do that.

I just care not to.

Do you think some of the fascination comes from the man's relative successes? I mean, the guy is absolutely ridiculous, reminds you of every other 'spiritual' slimebag who sucks at the teat of society and private ignorance, is obsessed with his own self-assessed brilliance, etc.

But he also:
1. Astonishingly survived 1000 days at sea
2. Seems to have maintained a decent relationship with a beautiful, (relatively) sane woman
3. Somehow or other has not devolved into a fireball of failure like so many like him do (see "Irene, Stupidity During")

And now, he's seemingly convinced a second woman (underage?) to join him on another trip, which his first lady seems fine with. If nothing else, at least his relative successes sustain the entertainment?

Speaking of sustaining entertainment:

You might want to limit your view to 13:30 to 16:00

As they say in these parts,"You really can't make this shit up".

I think the SA Stowe phenomenon has been less about mockery and more about simply observing and expressing amazement at his sheer audacity.

i think Stowe's pattern of behaviors is fascinating. like all malignant narcissistic sociopaths, his repetoire is very limited. i actually don't believe he is capable of modifying his behavior. (faulty wiring).
before SA shined the spotlight on him, he got away with some real whoppers.

soanya sees strawberry blonde, just like wife 2. or was it three?
the facts are simple.
the money his buddies gave him for dockage has run out and neither of them want to get a job. there is no book, no movie, no nothing.
i believe Stowe will revert to criminal behavior, (the easy way), rather than 'step up' and support his family legitimately. the most accurate indicator of future behavior is past behavior. Reid has already admitted the last time he went to South America was for the purpose of smuggling. what's changed?
hucksters are forever.

what is the title for this 'adventure'? Reid has shouted every voyage he makes has a title.
Stowe has declared himself a public figure. speculating on his actions is as fair game as any celebrity gossip or political forum.

Jesus F. Christ, what the hell have I been doing? Here I am, not more than a couple of miles from physical embodiment of the second immaculate conception known to man, and I haven't dropped by for a visit. I should have paid better attention in Sunday school or something. Have they left yet? Maybe I should pick up some myrrh or something first.

Gouv, I must take the time to congratulate you on the cross thread you have going on.

Is truly inspirational, and some of the best I have ever seen.

What is a cross thread??

Single helical thread on ground cone is easy to install without cross thread; accepts variations in raceway diameters and convolution pitch, thusly --

Wait for it....

Tis were you quote or reference between threads. Can be particularly confusing for someone not up to speed on what is going on.

Stowe is a polarizing character, to say the least. I personally don't have a problem with his lifestyle, taking off sailing for years on end sure beats working for a living, and he has managed to talk young females into accompanying him. I just find his pseudo spiritual hippie throwback claptrap and grandiose proclamations about all the things he is doing for mankind hysterically funny. His "art" looks like something Bull Gator would bang out with a sawsall on an extended meth bender. Anyone that could come up with Void Ho as a serious expression just screams to be mocked.

His attempts to get people to fund his lifestyle have been something less than completely above board, and as stated above do hurt other people trying to raise funds for their projects. Stowe is about Stowe, plain and simple. Nothing wrong with that, as long as you are upfront about it.
