The fourth regatta in the 2011/12 America's Cup World Series is in
Naples, Italy, with racing on April 11-15. The event will feature nine
boats from seven countries, including: Luna Rossa Challenge (Italy) with
two boats, Artemis Racing (Sweden), China Team (China), Emirates Team New
Zealand (New Zealand), Energy Team (France), ORACLE Racing (USA) with two
boats, and Team Korea (Korea). Races can be viewed on the America's Cup
YouTube channel (youtube.com/user/AmericasCup), either live or replay. Here

Looking on the plus side of a shrinking AC there will be plenty of spare parts should anyone else pull a " Oracle " and T bone another boat. that kind of crash will have no quick fix but you could grab one of the other hulls laying around for instance. Quick paint job and off you go .

Have they paid for the first and if so can they afford a second ? Money is a real dark cloud for these guys at the moment unless the rumors of a decent sponsor come tru.

Crane Cam 1 was looking along the shoreline just now and then panned in to the distance, there must be ten thousand people along the waterfront. I suspect the area near Base Cam 1 (ETNZ boat in the foreground) is off limits to the public - although perhaps one can walk by the other side of it, behind where the camera is aimed.

Even if 99% of these people would have been there for Easter anyway, it sure is getting their attention. Good chance that many of them will follow the racing later this week, perhaps on TV, now that they have that 'I was there!' connection.

If it helps the Opening ceremony album, from last night (8th), is also dated 9th April - so that would be the upload date rather than the shooting date. Maybe someone can read the Exif data on the photos to be sure, but I believe the crowd shots are from yesterday during the three hours of sunshine that coincided with the afternoon training races. All good.

ORACLE Racing played Naples today: Easter Monday brought huge crowds to the America's Cup World Series Naples venue.

Despite this being practice day with most teams staying ashore, Darren Bundock was mobbed on his way to a live interview with Mediaset outside the village this morning.

Hard to know who's right, and there is big variability in how (at a time, or total visits) and how wide an area you count, etc, etc. At first glance I don't even see the 70k number anyway, but 15k for just the opening ceremony alone is a Lot. http://translate.goo...dnotizia=116223

What will be more interesting is if after Easter some people still turn out, go on the spec boats, buy T's, tune into the YT or TV channels, whatever.

No, I don't think so. The increased minimum for the wing applies in 'measurement condition' which does not include the extensions IIRC.

Gearing up


The ORACLE Racing Bundock crew, tied for fourth in the overall ACWS standings, says it's ready for ACWS Naples.

Darren Bundock: We just need to be consistent. We showed in San Diego that we can win a few races, but we also had a few disasters as well. We just have to get the disasters out of the playbook and be consistent; work on our communications on the boat and keep plugging away.

Tom Slingsby: It's very tricky the tactician's role because you're doing so much work. I've got to work well with Kyle (Langford, wing trimmer) and Bundy, paint the picture for them and tell them where the wind is. We'll swap roles on who makes decisions depending on if I have enough time. I'll do it or those guys will take it.

Kyle Langford: I've previously been trimming the mainsail, so it's not a big transition to the wingsail – it simplifies it to some terms. I'm looking forward to getting out with the wing; it's fun, cutting-edge technology. It's real exciting.

A PARADIGM SHIFT
It is hard to believe how much has occurred with the America's Cup in such
a compressed time. The AC45 was only launched just over a year ago. The
broadcast capabilities were first revealed last August. Both started well
and keep improving.

At each AC World Series event, the race format has been fine tuned. And
this week, at the fourth event in Naples, the format will reveal a paradigm
shift. Despite the America's Cup being a match race event, the race
schedule has reduced the match racing emphasis. Viewers prefer watching the
fleet races.

As the primary purpose of the AC World Series is to grow the America's Cup
brand, hopefully creating a hungry audience for the 34th America's Cup next
year, doesn't this present a problem? Regatta Director Iain Murray comments
on this revelation and its affect...

I think what is important is how the World Series is in 45-foot boats and
that it's not the America's Cup. What it does do, is present the
nationalities and the teams, and hopefully the super sailors - the "heroes"
- as identifiable characters that will emerge in the America's Cup.

If we were sailing in the same boats the whole time, whether it be AC72s or
if the America's Cup was in AC45s, we would have a different pallet to work
with. But we don't. And the America's Cup is and always will be match
racing.

What we have is these separate events in different boats, and not
necessarily the same teams in the World Series as in the America's Cup.
That in itself is confusing to people. What we are doing here is to
simplify what we are producing.

We must be very careful to keep the integrity of the America's Cup in one
piece. It could have been a very easy call some time ago to decide the
AC72s are too hard, and to carry on with the AC45s, and we would have all
these teams in the America's Cup. There was a conscious decision taken for
this not to happen. To me that was an important step. The America's Cup is
a grand event. It is not going to be something that everyone can do. And it
will be in match racing.

I think more the question is are we diluting the America's Cup with the AC
World Series. I hope not. I hope we are rebuilding the America's Cup with
awareness, and creating our heroes in sailing, and something that the young
kids can look forward to. And offering the competitors now, like Terry
Hutchinson, Jimmy Spithill, and the others, they are all clearly the up and
coming legends in our sport, and build them into the Ted Turners, Tom
Blackhallers, and Dennis Conners of the future.

It is a fine balance the whole time of what we do with the America's Cup.

Barker's crew will be his regulars - Ray Davies, Winston Macfarlane, James Dagg and Glenn Ashby. But some of the other countries have beefed up their crews with catamaran experts in the off-season and Barker expects the level of competition to be tougher than last year.

Q for LR: what language do you use on the boat, and what phrases do the non-speakers have to know best?

Guess we will get the LR feeds but it's an interesting question anyway.. Especially with Draper's French to add to the mix.
