Time for the fake imitation guy to start a new fake imitation thread.....

Long live the real Motorcycle

I guess Stowe is still bobbing around, people continue to give him enough stuff to get by and he manages to lure in another young thing.

So it's off to Guyana? Away from the "yachties", lawyers and bill collectors.

Still amazed he can sail around NY harbor without being impounded.

Wednesday, 07 September 2011 Posted Image

After a year of boat living in the protected waters of New York Harbor, Soanya and I are feeling the call of the wild wide open sea again. We think our three year old son Darshen is ready to go too. When a storm wind blows between the buildings that line the waterfront, Darshen stands in the wind with his arms stretched out to the sides and shouts over and over again, “I love the breeze!” Soanya’s family is from Guyana and we have been thinking of sailing there for many reasons. We want to sail to a faraway place where we won’t tourists or “yachties.” We will leave NY be leaving NY and the cold North Atlantic and enter warmer waters and trade winds. As we sail into warm tropical winds we will make our landfall on a jungle coast and begin our exploration of Guyana’s rivers.

A friend of ours had to abandon his 90 ft. sailboat. As a result, he gave us all the gear like the anchor, chain, sails, rigging, turnbuckles, ropes and pulleys. This gift freed us up to imagine we could go to sea again. We have quite a few friends who have been telling us that they want to go with us when we go again. So we are already taking crew onboard and are interviewing others. Rachel has already moved on the schooner and more are coming.

Of course we will have to work on the schooner as we go. Seamanship comes first. As we explore the outer reaches of nature where few people go. We will share our story live as we did on our previous “longest non-stop continuous sea voyage in history.”

the truth is somewhere in between the sycophants and the sardonic critics (the latter being much more humorous though to be sure). He has sailed around the world at about two knots. He did jury-rig his headstays and foresails after losing his bowsprit in a collision with a containership, and it lasted for three years. He did manage to stay alive without restocking food or water from shore. He did round both of the Capes. And he didn't seem to end up significantly crazier than when he started out.

Then again, the jury rig was needed because he failed to see the containership coming on a clear night, some of his reports make one's head want to explode, the Anne is kind of a piece of lead, and, uh, then there's the Soanya story, the kid, and all the rest.

Could also be that a lot of people go out and go cruising the old fashioned way - they save their shekels for years and/or work along the way to afford it. Rather than creating some highly publicized "Magical Mystery Tour" where you try to get people to sponsor you for some pseudo-scientific art project thingy. Which, on the whole seems easier especially if you aren't too fastidious about things like boat maintenance or watching where you are going.

I'm wondering if I can find a way to re-purpose our family cruise next year to some sort of pseudo-scientific psychedelic art experiment so I can put a Paypal button on my blog for the betterment of humanity too.

Or not.

So I'm curious. I that that Reid is one odd guy.

So, aside from that, what is the heartburn, specifically, that some of you have with him?

Not defending him. Just curious.

And no, I'm not trolling.

The story is sailing related.

Yeah, it is, as far as I can tell. They guy sails, and does other stuff that, apparently, pushes some buttons.

However, he does sail. Right?

Anyway, I asked a straight question. Let's see if I get a straight answer.

His fastidious obsession with maintenance, the ridiculously high standards he sets for crew selection, and his humility.

</sarcasm>

Don't forget his provisioning...

Sponsor links from the first trip ---

Parmigiano Reggiano -- I do love the product, myself, and would never have known the strict production requirements or how long that shit would last without the 1000 Days Space Oddity.

Posted Image

Sprout seeds came from that NY guy who owns Kadouri International, who was concerned at one point that the head aquanaut wasn't what he appeared to be, but only expressed his misgivings once in the NYDN. I gotta say, if this guy's sprouts are still sprouting after 1000 days of damp, he's the go-to guy for seeds. He also had dried fruit aboard the Schooner and the nuts he supplied had a higher sanity factor than the Skipper.

Posted Image

The sponsor who deserves the most credit, IMO, is Optima Battery. The most important system on the boat that didn't shit the bed. These guys could have gotten their money's worth if the space cadet had mentioned them more than 3 times over 1100 days.

Nothing says I *ever* have to 'fit in' with every aspect of the culture here. Nothing.

I see it as different levels of mocking. Sure, I poke fun at my friends, to their face. I'll accept it to my face from my friends. The distinction here is intent and motive. I'll do it because it's not building me up by tearing them down.

I see that as quite different then spending a lot of energy mocking someone I don't know. It does me no good, serves no purpose for me.

For. Me.

If you or someone else wants to, have at it.

As for me, I spend my energy on other things.

See the difference?

And hard enough, thank you. No reason to sharpen my edge on someone I don't know.

I poked fun at him via e-mail and poked fun at his shore team in person. He's well loved, has some incredibly good friends, and Soanya is not the idiot some make her out to be. She's no Abby Sunderland, but she's no naive idiot attention whore either; or not that....either.

I, like most of the other idiots here, spend a lot of time sailing and no one here, except for maybe Espo, lauds their talents publicly.

If one wants to be a part of the sailing fraternity (which I am currently pledging) , he/she should do something other than nautical pole sitting.

I appreciate your position, Blackjenner. I have a soft spot in my heart for Reid Stowe as well. But when sponsorship dollars for sailing ventures are so hard to come by, this bull shit "Mars Mission" fucks the rest of the pooches' dollars.

Night, mate. Check his website and toss it over a bit.

Sorry I used the word "idiot" so much. Makes me feel normal.

Anyway, I get the resentment on the part of some. I also understand, all too well, the path of making this guy a hobby. I've seen the websites mocking him to no end but, ya know, I don't know if he cares.

He's living some part of some dream that is his. So he drifted/sailed for 1000 days around the oceans of the world, navigating a heart in one ocean with his positions and a whale in another. He did that in a boat of his own creation. Slow and odd that his trip may have been, he did, apparently sail (slowly) at sea for a thousand days.

He's apparently in the company of a beautiful wife and a cute little kid, who he seems, from what I've read, to love very much.

Yeah, he's a weirdo to many, and he rubs some folks the wrong way. He's an artist and his art isn't to everyone's taste. I've had a lot of artist friends in my time and, I'll tell you, I've spent more than one moment looking at them a little sideways and accepting that their art is not quite my cup of tea, if not downright weird. And to that I say, "so what. it's their art. I don't have to like it."

Oh, I get what you are saying, especially him getting the attention/dollars that some of us think we deserve. It's kind of like that douche in high school or college who gets all the girls when all we one is one, maybe two. I mean, we aren't greedy. :)

It's tough when we know we are talented, deserving, and some other guy gets the promotion/sponsorship/role. There have been times in my life when I haven't gotten that promotion. That hurt. I auditioned and didn't get the role I was perfect for, dammit. That was hard too. But other times, I've had my day in the sun, gotten some attention I damn well deserved, and I'll be happy with that.

Back to the original point, I see no benefit to me, or anyone else in spending any real energy mocking the man.

He seems to be happy. He's sailed the seas of the world.

That's more than some.

Reid Stowe is a consumate con man and a charlatan. That is why we make fun of him. He sold the unsuspecting public a bill of false goods about his scientifically important Mars Analagous mission which was a bunch of baloney, to con money and supplies out of naive non-sailors. His so called "record" is the equivalent of nautical pole sitting, as Regatta Dog has already pointed out.

So you Like him??

Others are entitled to so do. They don't need my permission or agreement to do that.

I just care not to.

I may have missed: had someone posted a request that you mock him?

It was in response to a comment someone else made.

http://forums.sailin...dpost&p=3409826

Let me guess....you're another one of those uptight libby Seattle pot smoking coffee-sucking fuk-wits who live under a pile of moss, hasn't seen the sun since JFK's funeral, willfully pay more taxes so that junkies can run free with needles stuck in their arms, thinks an idea of a good date is going umbrella shopping, is pissed that tofu will never taste like venison, owns three de-clawed cats, has spent ten years perfecting a hemp condom, owns a 63 year gaff-rigged woody that looks like a g-damn Chia pet, stands in line at the Apple store eight months before a new product has even passed the third test stage, thinks Sideways was the best f'ng movie since Ishtar, drives a Toyota Hi-Lux that runs on used vegetable and love, holds a candle light vigil on the day that Kurt failed shot gun 101 and has three adopted redwoods named Al, Mikey and Carbon Credit?.......

Nice rant

i think Stowe's pattern of behaviors is fascinating. like all malignant narcissistic sociopaths, his repetoire is very limited. i actually don't believe he is capable of modifying his behavior. (faulty wiring).
before SA shined the spotlight on him, he got away with some real whoppers.

soanya sees strawberry blonde, just like wife 2. or was it three?
the facts are simple.
the money his buddies gave him for dockage has run out and neither of them want to get a job. there is no book, no movie, no nothing.
i believe Stowe will revert to criminal behavior, (the easy way), rather than 'step up' and support his family legitimately. the most accurate indicator of future behavior is past behavior. Reid has already admitted the last time he went to South America was for the purpose of smuggling. what's changed?
hucksters are forever.

what is the title for this 'adventure'? Reid has shouted every voyage he makes has a title.
Stowe has declared himself a public figure. speculating on his actions is as fair game as any celebrity gossip or political forum.

Making this one is high praise??

DAY 2
40° 45' 21" north
73° 59' 11" west

Wind from the north and windy.

As the day approaches for the journeys start, my lust for my new found youth grows. I can not wait to be away again -
to be alone again drifting south - alone but yet with others. To share my knowledge with my fruit and to be at sea again with the fruit's mother and my new found youth. I can feel the closeness with God, Buddha and all, and with my ship, my wife and my youth I can again indulge, combine and consummate my 2 greatest passions.

Painting and cheese.
