Rachel has a lot to learn. She writes:
Soanya leads the charge for a new kind of sailor. Standing on the shoulder's of great feminist cruisers and circumnavigators, she upped the ante for female ocean voyagers with her record breaking 306 days without resupply at sea....[I] have been lucky enough to have had Soanya by my side as I learn about sailing...
Crikey, mate, didn't the 1000 Days log say (I would have to look it up) that Soanya spent most of her time below decks? There is no evidence Soanya knows how to sail or could manage the boat if she had to. Why is it that suddenly Soanya "I don't like the dampness of being outside and prefer to stay down below" (or words to that effect) is suddenly now the teacher?
TFR.
Rachel has drunk deeply of Reids Kool Aid. Soanya was merely a passenger hiding below, cerainly not much of a participant on the former cheese & sprout driftathon... Sure hope nothing happens to these untrained newbies once they get offshore and into some weather...

I hope nothing untoward happens, but maybe they will learn to sail? Best case is that they actually learn something about sailing, seamanship and sailboat maintenance. Maybe bring along some books.
Well, that is what we can hope for. And we know hope floats, so they will all be ok

Spooky!
The similarities between Carly and Weid are astounding! Is Carly Weid's secret love child? Look at the similarities:
- operate by the grace and gifts of others.
- a narcissistic blog complete with spelling mistakes.
- art that reminds me of the immortal words of Homer Simpson: "If I can do it, it's not art.".
- reflect poor planning skills.
If these two aren't related, they are certainly cut from the same cloth. They are made for each other.

This one reminds me of this horrible joke:
A guy calls a bordello and asks for the skinniest girl they have. He insists, her ribs must be sticking out, she must have no ass: a crack addict would be best.
The girl comes to his house: he tells her to strip, get on the floor, and get on her hands and knees.
Then he brings in his German Shepherd...
And says, "Look boy, this is what happens if you don't eat your food!!"
OK, about the worst joke ever.

Day Four
40° 45' 21" north 73° 59' 11" west
Wind -windy but not as windy as yesterday windyness.
As the Schooners crew swells with yet another new member, I feel myself swelling also.
Our newest crew has made me grow as she is an artist as am I and together we can throw away the limits of society and explore the boundaries of creativity within our new world.
A world with only a horizon and sky as its boundaries and no one can see us and we can't see them.
Like me, Carly does not confine her creativity to a canvas, but, like me she paints on the things about her. What most people call junk, we call art.
As the schooner and I and my coven prepare, I reflect on how most people prefer to leave behind clues as to their future, but not I.
I am completely clueless.
The preparations continue.

Wow, just wow. Those are 10 min of my life I'll never get back, but it was worth every second of it. Personal favorite:
The captain of the boat, Reid Stowe, is an accomplished sailor holding two world records so I am definitely in good hands. Also coming along will be his girlfriend, Soanya who is also an incredibly accomplished mariner, possibly the most experienced female sailor [...] Reid’s schooner, Anne, is a beautiful beast.[...] The fiberglass on the deck is rusted and on the hull the sea has painted a beautiful abstract scene of green splotches speckled with barnacles.

Replacing the old shackle with the new.
Soanya's View:
We haven't set an exact date on when we're leaving for our Voyage to the Mystic Jungles of Guyana, but it's roughly one month away. The energy onboard is stepping up woven with excitement, anticipation, preparations, hard work, and lots of people coming and going. We just got our charts for Guyana and are planning ways to navigate into the biggest jungle river in the country, the Essequibo river. Reid and I are getting items we won't be using in the next six months off the boat. That means most of the winter clothes we would have worn had we stayed in New York, stacks of art work, some of the special sculptures, toys Darshen is no longer playing with, old notebooks, 1000 Days promo materials, foul weather gear suitable for Antarctica, etc. We're tweaking our electrical systems, and getting our satellite iridium telephone working again. We're looking at our food lists and getting our staples for the next months.
The crew is looking into immunizations where applicable, mosquito netting, bug repellents, and rain gear. They are also slowly moving onboard one by one. We tell them the sooner the better because it takes time to get use to living on a boat. There are always things you think you need that you really don't and things you wish you had and realize would be good to get before leaving. It it an ongoing process as we discover what we can and can not live without.
We have some major boat work planned before departure including replacing the rigging, replacing the bowsprit, and fixing the main gaff. All the work will be done on the dock with Reid overseeing it every step of the way. Soon, the schooner will be ready for her next adventure.

So crew list is expanding. Hope someone steps up and provides a larger life raft. Someday Stowe's luck is going to run out. Boat needs more than a few shackles and bits of rigging.
Suspect Soanya's Guyanese family has provided much support and inspiration for the trip.

One has to truly worry about these new gals and their families. They beleive Stowe is a competent "world record setting" voyager, but that is hardly reality...
I had the same thought after having a bit of a laugh at Soy being "possibly the most experienced female mariner."
That rusty fiberglass makes me wonder how the ferrosprout construction is holding up. I'm guessing there is not as much metal holding it all together as there once was...
I wonder... if you took some liquid fertilizer and laced it with a bit of molasses to make it sticky, could you then coat the whole boat and cover it with sprout seeds, letting them take root in the rusty cracks? Sort of a Chia boat, but edible and with the added bonus that roots will help hold the concrete together.

So what did you do for Columbus Day?
EarthImage had a dockside visit with a modern-day Christopher Columbus. Capt. Reid Stowe and family, aboard their ship The Anne, have set the world's longest sail record, 1152 days without landing or re-supply.
A remarkable story, indeed, the website 1000 Days with many links to articles.
Reid and family are preparing to depart for Guiana about November 1. In the meantime, he's docked at 44th Drive in Long Island City, Queens. (link)

I am sure they would be happy with a tip&roll job...
Maybe Home Depot will donate some Behrs exterior latex??
Rustoleum would be better.
......too late

Found this on some blog --
From EarthImage:
So what did you do for Columbus Day?
EarthImage had a dockside visit with a modern-day Christopher Columbus. Capt. Reid Stowe and family, aboard their ship The Anne, have set the world's longest sail record, 1152 days without landing or re-supply.
A remarkable story, indeed, the website 1000 Days with many links to articles.
Reid and family are preparing to depart for Guiana about November 1. In the meantime, he's docked at 44th Drive in Long Island City, Queens. (link)
Replace a couple shackles and she'll be good as new.
"Modern day Christopher Columbus", indeed.
WTF is that thing on the port side of the mizzen mast?

One of his giant sculptures??
Could be - maybe it's what he uses to store his slack rigging.

Replacing the old shackle with the new.
Soanya's View:
The crew is looking into immunizations where applicable, mosquito netting, bug repellents, and rain gear.
By 'Rain gear' I hope she means condoms.

We have some major boat work planned before departure including replacing the rigging, replacing the bowsprit...
How long ago did he break off that freighter prodster again?

We're looking at our food lists and getting our staples for the next months.
I guess the staples should give them a good supply of iron in their diet....
But they might be better off using the staples for holding the hull and sails together...

Sorry, I am not seeing any down side to that strategy! No job, no money for housing or heat. So, con some nubile lasses for a sailing lark to warmer latitudes and tantric love fests.....

It's a schooner, so the aft mast is actually the main mast. . .
Mea Culpa - appreciate the correction.

Where am I? In a cube working for the man
What is he doing?
Spending his whole life getting laid by silly young chicks and not ever once having a "job".
The rust is just a cover to keep us from seeing the underlying brilliance I tell you.
