Just happened across this thread. Know nothing about this guy. Certainly this Reid Stowe seems to be an eccentric - void hoo etc.... , 1000 days at sea. However is there more to him than this? There appears to be suggestions of chicanery and run ins with the law. Has he ever actually done anything wrong? Does he read these posts I wonder? If he does and they are untrue, if I were him I would be well pissed.....

I forget where, but I think it's linked in the main (now closed) thread toward the end.

Basically, it was a thread in which they were tracking his position, but only by reference to his number. Using names or terms that would bring the thread up in any kind of Hovian related search was prohibited. Pretty funny. I found out about it at the end and scanned it a bit, but didn't read the whole thing, so I'm not really sure what's in there.

Weido's been home for quite a bit and still doesn't seem to have made any significant repairs to the sproutship. Bet nothing besides the replacement of a few shackles and lines gets done.. Totally depends on what people give, I mean donate to him. All this talk of overhauling gear prior to leaving for Guyana is probably just to allay the concerns of the newbies.

Was sad to see someone give Weid that lovely sailing dinghy. Could have been donated to the kids in the Rock The Boat program in the Bronx and used for something worthwhile.

I thought about that today whilst driving, and I'm willing to cut Reid some slack on this trip. He's not asking the public for donations. I'd wager that his passengers are paying passengers (not so much cash, but provisioning and some gifts in kind) and am excited that he's going to get the sat phone going. There will probably be more than a few laptops and digital cameras on the Lido Deck.

I've never been to Guyana, but my mother's cousin (twice removed) took her kids down there with some guru from Cali to start a new life in the early 70's after a bad divorce . Last letter my Mom got in the mid 70's, things were going well. We haven't heard from her in 30 years, but assume she and the kids are doing well.

I'll drop Reid an E-mail and ask him to track the family down when he arrives. My dear aging Mother would love to know how the kids turned out.

Day Five

Wind - Quite windy but not as windy as it gets sometimes when it is very windy.



As our departure looms I, as a man of the sea and a seaman, am aware of the perils that may lie ahead. The sea is my friend but my friend has many moods and so I must prepare the schooner for my friends’ bad moods. The schooner is strong but there is much work to be done. I must stow the ship well for in past voyages to these waters, my ship was not stowed well enough and so I had to remain ashore for some months to reflect on my poor stowage. The lesson this taught me is that it is just as important to stow the ship for entering new ports than it is to put to sea.
We shall make the schooner stronger so that my crew of sirens is safe from perils and that they trust and understand my seamanship as Soy does. I look forward to the tests ahead and hope that at some stage of the journey each of the sirens will have an opportunity to bring out the seaman from within me.

What about Reid don't you understand. A proper semen leaves home with as much force as possible, propelled it knows not where and into whatever conditions exist. If there is no barrier to exiting the harbor then the journey commences, the route unknown, the destination unclear- hopefully a tight harbor and a snug fit.

bugger, i am not much of a navigator, being mostly content just to pinpoint my location rather than plan ahead too far.
but i have heard a little bit about that passage from other sailors and yeah, it's a zig zag.
he will have to go east first, that's correct.
it is actually fortunate that he is starting so far north, it gives him a lot more favorable angle.
i would guess he will basically head over spain wise then south along africa far enough to slide in low on the hellish north bound current along the sa coast north of brazil. no way he can buck it in the scow, it would break up in the relentless chop. he will probably follow his catamaran track to the letter, he doesn't actually like to change a once successful event..he likes to replicate it and is very predictable that way much as he tries to come off as a risk taker.
i read an article by i think its redshoes on cruising world one time where he describes sailing the other way, direct, down from the antilles. i never forgot his story. if you can find that article, it's a really good read.
he can get out of winter in just three days and the boisterous winds will actually help him move along reefed waay down sloppy hauled.
Reid doesn't overthink it, he uses the passage charts and follows the windroses on there, regardless of current conditions so if you look at those charts, you will have his route precisely.
the only drawback in that plan is his crew. he might be thinking he should follow the u.s. coast down to nc to temper his crew and dump the sea sickies who want off. he can't do that in the middle of the atlantic. but he might pick up some spare change hustling the docks offering tours of the schooner and some family might give him some groceries.
the angle from there is much harder though. due east to clear the bahamas i think.
i predict he will first head to the place where they drifted and did repairs for months and remenisce with a blog entry. (swami pip). i also think one of the girls might suddenly discover other commitments and can't go..

Explains the source of the rigging bring utilized in the preparation for the next great voyage.

Yeah. That was fun, K-I-S, but after a couple grand in therapy, I'm able to keep this little jaunt at arm's length. Hell, I'm not even doing the virtual Volvo race this time around. I've found an antiquated form of entertainment called a "book", and there's a business in my town called "The Library" that let's you borrow them without paying. I have no idea how they stay in business. Perhaps late fees or revenue from the copying machine. Whatever it is, they had some major financing. The inventory is incredible.

The second crew member to move aboard, Alex Sanford, came ready for heavy duty work and he has not been disappointed. In his flame resistant pants and ipod in tow, he fired up the cutting torch and sparks began to fly. A few weeks ago as we attempted to put on the graciously donated turnbuckles, we found that 3 years at sea had corroded them to inoperable, immovable, masses of rust. They had to be torched off. We now float with the old rigging dangling from the mast head and the new rigging being prepped for installation.

This week we focused on freeing the old bowsprit, and retiring her to scrap metal. The jury rigged reminder of day 15 of the 1000 Days voyage when a collision with a freighter severely damaged our bowsprit is finally being laid to rest. The little stub is being replaced with a new proud bowsprit and bow pulpit before we leave for Guyana. Alex's welding skills are being put to good use as the schooner Anne gets ready to sail again.

We now float with the old rigging dangling from the mast head and the new rigging being prepped for installation.

This week we focused on freeing the old bowsprit, and retiring her to scrap metal. The jury rigged reminder of day 15 of the 1000 Days voyage when a collision with a freighter severely damaged our bowsprit is finally being laid to rest. The little stub is being replaced with a new proud bowsprit and bow pulpit before we leave for Guyana. Alex's welding skills are being put to good use as the schooner Anne gets ready to sail again.

Where's that old vid of Reid talking about how he's always maintaining the schooner and keeping her in good condition? You know the one about him being such a great con... I mean seaman.

If you have any problems with that, I've still got the DOS bible and we can do a config.sys command, identify the hardware, ping the server, and concatenate the file and reduce the size by 10% using a 1996 version of Win-Zip. Or I could just send you a 9 track tape. I think LexisNexis still has some of that technology up at their Dayton campus, but since Reed Elsevier took over the campus, they've gotten all "modern". I hear they use high speed internet connections, but am not sure if they do that with DOS commands.

Stowe will recount the amazing voyage at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wilbur Cross High School Auditorium, 181 Mitchell Drive. Tickets are $10 at the door and $7 in advance at the New Haven Department of Parks, Recreation & Trees office at 720 Edgewood Ave.

If anyone shows up and pays the ten bucks, I would say it's proof that the Ed should charge admission for the old 1,000 days thread. Has to be worth $20 at least.

I think Soanya caught a few drips on a few occasions where she called it to my attention.

It could be the stuffing box, where the propeller goes out at the back of the boat, or the stern gland, where the rudder goes out the back of the boat. It could be any seacocks to the toilets. You have to know what is in various rooms that are possibilities for leaking. You have to get your rest.


We had winds in Antarctica that blew so hard you couldn’t do anything. They didn’t last that long, luckily. But when we were in the Roaring 40s, when the storm came, the wind was coming [at] 50 to 70 knots. I had some extra holes in the steelwork that I did from bolting the solar panels. When the wind starts blowing like that, I thought I was in a train station; I couldn’t stop the noise with pillows over my head. So definitely after that storm, I went out and stuffed rags in the holes that I could find anywhere.

Pulling, pulling so hard. When I wasn’t sailing, I was sewing ’til I had chronic pain in my hands. And I would fall asleep and the pain in my hands would wake me up.

So I called on God, [whom] I imagined as those great Italian paintings: a sixty-five-year-old, well-muscled, bald man with a long beard. I said, “God, tell Jesus to heal this arm.” And then I felt Jesus take my arm and start massaging it. I saw his soft, beautiful face. I said, “God, tell Buddha to heal this arm.” Then I saw Buddha come and take this arm, start massaging it and healing it. Then the three of them came closer to heal me together. And they bumped heads. They started laughing together, and Buddha looked at me and winked.

The hatches in the boat have slides. They’re homemade and they’re not watertight. So if the boat’s going under water, water’s squirting in. [I] got completely drenched by the water, and the water woke me up.

A Visit to the Sail Loft Friday, 04 November 2011



Reid and crew went to the sail loft at City Island, NY to re-cut the sails that were donated to us. Our friend Sequoia, who graciously gave us a good portion of the equipment from his former 90 ft sailboat, also gave us his sails which needed to be customized to fit the schooner Anne. Paul the sail maker from Doyle Sails, was kind enough to allow us to use the sail loft with an industrial sewing machine and lend his expertise to the process of designing, cutting, shaping, and sewing the sails. After some initial drawings, measurements, taking into consideration usage (cruising, not racing) and areas of likely wear and chafe the sails were ready to be cut and reworked. Rachel operated the machine while Reid and Alex wrestled the many feet of Dacron material into position.





In one exhausting day, a new foresail and staysail was made. Reid was satisfied that we took full advantage of the short time we had at the sail loft. However, we would have to go with our old mainsail. The mainsail from the other boat was tall but not wide enough for the Anne and so it became our foresail. We continue our preparations….
