thanks for the weather HC. if they put up a sail and can make use of that wind, they'll be in bare chested weather in 48-60 hours/4 knots.
which guy dropped out? i can't tell the scruffies apart.
was it the one leaking the iffy body language? or the guy in the back?
rachel has gone all out buying the tshirts and caps..very nice of her to promote unity. too bad it backfires and seperates god and godess from crew..

Dec. 12, 2011 Day 7
The Rudderless Schooner
Usually when we set off to sea on the schooner Anne we have quite a few adjustments to make before settling into the life aquatic. Sailing into the cold North Atlantic can be quite a test. After surviving our first storm with a green seasick crew getting dripped on from above and taking turns pumping the bilge through the night, there were very few who turned out for their breakfast oats. Having shredded our foresail the night before, we didn’t have any sail up to steady us. We decided to set our staysail and run off down wind in the storm. Alex, Dusty, and I heaved up the staysail and the schooner took off downwind. I turned the ship’s wheel to set a course but the schooner didn’t respond. I saw that in our current direction, the wind would get behind the staysail and flip her to the other side in a dangerous accidental jibe. I shouted “We are going to jibe!” and ran below to check the steering system. I opened the cabinet under the galley sink to check the steering quadrant.
The top of the rudder had broken off and the quadrant was lying on its side!! We were now without steerage! I stuck my finger in the rudder stuffing box to see if the rudder was still there. The top of the rudder shaft was moving in its bearing. I went outside and announced that we had lost steerage. We tried to steer off the wind with just the staysail but didn’t have much success. With all the other things that were happening to us, I was a bit daunted. How could we steer anywhere? At least we had enough food and water for a few months. The crew was still ready to ride out the adventure they began. We are not ready to call for help yet!

Due to the fact that we’re conserving our battery power and working hard to fix the Anne from the last gale as well as prepare ourselves for the next one, apparently tonight, I’m going to keep it brief and get to the highlights.
After a slow departure out of New York Harbor, we were quickly in jittery seas and overcast which haven’t as much ceased except for one peaceful sunny morning.
On the evening of Wednesday December 7th, a storm started to brew up from the south forcing us to lower our sails one by one with the exeption of the foresail. By early Thursday morning, the storm was at full gale force (40+ knots ~ 46+ mph). In addition, waves on the magnatude of 10-15′ height rocked us pretty good. It turned out to be quite an epic storm.
By the end, I had vomitted 7 times and declared myself bed ridden.
The toll on the Anne was bad too. We lost our headstay which holds the jib (fore most sail) in place. Next the foresail took a huge tare which took 6 of us to bring it down at about 1am fighting against the storm. Then, we lost our rudder which meant that we vurtally had no way to steer the boat for over 24hrs. And, a bunch of other things brokedown–just picture shit flying about like crazy, doors slamming..etc.
That’s all about fixed by now though. I had to dive in the open ocean and go under the boat to fix our rudder problem. That was fun and extremely cold. Saw some jelly fish. And everyone is alive and well.
Now we’re headed to the sweet, sweet Caribben (crossing the Gulf Stream today). Warm weather abound! Calm seas? We’ll see. Fingers crossed…stomach not.

The crew probably thinks that losing a head-stay, shredding a sail, being rained on in the cabin, taking shifts at the manual bilge pump throughout the night, and diving for a rudder repair is quite normal after going through 45 knots of breeze and 15 ' waves on a 70 foot schooner.
And to think, Mr. Doane referred to the people posting here as "the peanut gallery from SA".

I used the posit in Andy's note about everything breaking. Hard to imagine even Reid would head back NW. IIRC, the Spot posit is a couple of days old.
In any case, take them off and scuttle it. Norfolk already suffered this year from the "Hunter on the beach" during Irene.

That is what I thought would probably happen. But I guess it was no big deal to dive and place the rope around without explaining a bit more! Probably nobody wants the word to get out about how stupid it was to start with. Reid actually said that the quadrant and stock broke off! Sheesh!looking at the build pictures, the rudder has a removeable bottom gudgeon, attached to the keel. As long as its there, the rudder doesnt drop clean out of the boat. The quadrant would have been attached to the rudder shaft with a grub screw. Someone probably centred the quadrant to allow for the new bowsprit and headsail, and didnt do the grubscrew up tight enough. When the grubscrew slipped off the shaft, the quadrant fell off, and the rudder shaft dropped until it came up hard against the bottom gudgeon, and the top of the shaft disappeared into the ruddershaft hole. They would have solved it by throwing a rope under the rudder, and lifting it up, so that the shaft could be reattached to the quadrant. They had to dive down and position the rope under the rudder.
So he says he fixed the rudder. How?
Where are you reading Andys stuff? It's not on the 1000 days site???
http://acroninsails.wordpress.com/
Not difficult at all, easily repairable at sea (providing you dont strip the thread on the grubscrew), but makes for a dramatic story.

Yep, almost identical, except that reids prop is set more into the keel. so the rudder can be dropped out without taking the propellor off. The fact that the shaft drops at all, with the bottom gudgeon still attached, is testament to the wide tolerances (poor workmanship) in the hull. Those types of rudders, as your article says, are very unbalanced, meaning the torque on the quadrant is huge, especially if taken by a following sea. The relentless pull on the helm with those rudders usually mean that unless you have a very balanced sail plan to reduce it, the weather helm is significant, and you sail in heavy weather with the helm lashed. (a short length of rope which slides quickly off).
So, does anyone know how many posts it takes to reach "Anarchist" status? I hope it's not more than 1,000 or my "White Tiger" avatar may start to get restless. It's already purring menacingly, and I just had to throw it a mahi-mahi to calm it down.
Talking about gudgeons and rudders, 'Timmys_Trick_Turkey', is this what you are talking about? -- Full Keel Rudder .
Your article has the prop cut into the rudder, so that under heavy motoring, the helm lightens up. Reids doesnt. The advantage of the full keel with protected rudder is that if you take ground, or sail into a discarded fishing net, you are less likely to bend your ruddershaft or damage your rudder.
'Timmys_Trick_Turkey', very good answer! Now tell me -- would the tiller have been lashed to Leeward or Windward, in heavy weather? (I assume the answer is leeward, if the boat was suffering from Lee Helm during the storm.) If the Anne does not use a tiller then the rudder would be pointed in the opposite direction, naturally. At some point, the boat probably rounded up, as you pointed out earlier (Previous post), and the sails started flapping and were subjected to abnormal forces. I agree with this scenario.

the guy may be as off putting to some as newt gingrich to the PA, al gore to rush, michael savage to the queen of england, or obama to the repub right, still he continues to try to live his dream by hook or by crook, and is yet sailing a 70' schooner under his command for more thousands of sea miles offshore successfully, than i daresay any of you couchsitting posters 'ave e'er done.

My engine died this spring. Instead of going out anyway and complaining that no one would help me, I got some money together and bought another one. I did this with a "job". Weed could try that as well

truly too bad reid hasn't been the kind of guy to elicit the help of more sailors, instead of pissing them off royally. if a fraction of the time spent here on SA blasting the bugger, had instead been spent by a knowledgeable group of sailors to lend a hand to refitting what is so fondly referred to here as the cheese scow, i imagine that the group of passengers/crew/sailors for whom you all express such concern and sympathy for now, would be in much better stead. They'd be aboard a vessel more likely to sail into port in Guyana for inexpensive labor costs, than limp in at best at some time in the future.

Perhaps if Stowe came across as remotely humble and realistic about his goals and intentions, he might just get more support and less derision. But hey, we're just a bunch of chair warming vultures. What could we possibly offer?.

Pipsqueak, you must stop attempting to cleverly and falsely insert your high pitched squeal for my deep bass drone. Sounds like you musta missed me a lot more than I missed u. I guess I'll have to repeat, calmly in my deep voice- that if any of your concerns are real about Stowe's crew, then the immense time spent here throwing negativity his way, albeit in a sometimes highly creative and entertaining fashion, may have well been better spent actually getting to know the guy and perhaps even giving him a helping hand. For karma's sake alone, a helping hand is better than a vicious slapping down. It truly would be a shame if after the denizens of this obsessively devoted forum have spent years and years predicting his demise, calling for his demise, and actively seeking it, that after all those scores of thousands of offshore nautical miles, his schooner were actually to be severely compromised only now. Surely there would be a hue and cry from the gallery of we told you so, and surely like hyenas waiting to keen over a bloody kill, they're waiting in the wings to pounce.
...THEY WERE WARNED...surely I wasn't the only one to try and insert some perspective into their VERY creepy situation.
...sent to captain and crew.......... Nov 29
....as you prepare to depart into the northern atlantic in winter weather, many of the crew with little time sailing offshore,,let alone the conditions they are VERY likely to face.
HAVE YOU UPDATED THE LIFERAFT???
WILL YOU HAVE RELIABLE RADIO CONTACT??
DO YOU HAVE SUFFICIENT CLOTHING FOR WINTER CONDITIONS AT SEA???...ie survival suits??
..I feel VERY uneasy when I think of your prospects to survive anything but the most benign conditions............hopefully some kind of magic or FOOLS LUCK will keep you safe .

If you're referring to the "Dunedin" incident, I'm working on it. The working title is "The Story of Anne and Dunedin -- How Fate brought them together, but the Law of Physics drove them apart!" George Clooney - director (from The Men Who Stare at Goats), starring Robert De Niro as Dunedin's captain ("You talkin' to me?"), Leonardo DiCaprio (from Body of Lies) as Reid, Sonia Braga (from The Milagro Beanfield War) as Soanya and "moi" as producer. Give me another year, and it should be out in Theatres near you!

he's not a troll, really CS. i put him a notch above Charlie, Pete Mello, Tugster, Jesse, whatshisname and the rest of the gang..lurkers.
lucky for us RW has an anger management problem and can't keep it corked. (i relate).
RW's feeling guilty now that he didn't STEP UP even more.
that's what Stowe does..he makes his pals feel guilty until they give and give and give until they really can't justify giving any more. usually it's a family member or spouse who intervenes and says hey..enuff is enuff..when will your buddy be self sustaining and get off the hovian and state gravy train?
the sad part is during all that giving, Stowe has never ONCE reciprocated.
for all his grandiose talk about KARMA..he has NEVER done one nice thing for anyone but himself.
people are tools in his tool box. use them until they break and conjure up new ones.
RW's mad at himself, not us. and he is worried for the crew of the Anne. he knows first hand how dangly the anne is.
he can follow the timeline like any of us.
1. fog can't maneuver/slink around nefarious somethings going on
2. sails blown, crew half dead vomitus
3. bilge overflowing, low batt, everything is breaking, leaking and shitting the proverbial bucket
the natural progression is:
4. blub blub blub
we can cut him a break. at least he has the balls to come here, and speak his mind. (unlike some pot shotters who have access to the media like huffington post, ny mag, in flight magazine, explorers web, ny times, italian sailing press and i could go on..but why bother. we know who they are. phoneys to slam honest sailors.)
now that you bring it up couchsurfer, i too sent a note to a family member of the crew..begging them to check out Shaman Shithead and steering them to the appropriate facts. not myth, RW. facts.
you can lead a horse to water but you can't stop him from drowning i guess CS. yes, RW..my conscience is well fucking clear. and i don't support conmen, women beaters, dead beat daddies, jail birds, ex convicts, convicted felons, or fucktards..(*abbreviated list).
Reido's TRUE nature is evident to everyone but the poor fools he's duped and conned.
i did miss you a little bit RW. i don't mind your snarky bitch ass and i admire your (misplaced) loyalty. i only wish you might have fallen in with a real sailor not this cheap circus act fraud.
Reid Stowe's claim to being a great sailor is basically due to his sociopathy of being incapable of feeling fear. Casse Cou the french say, ask Laurence. He never even sails the boat..he just goes where the wind pushes him. if you were a sailor, you would know the 'art' is in going where YOU want.
i guess we can gather that RW didn't even get a nice goodbye from his 'pal' after all the hours he spent STEPPING UP.
hang around RW.. you might learn something against your best intentions. timmy's explanation of the rudder was tip top 4 ex.
quit with the 'called for his death crap' hon..you can do better than that.
and as far as i'm concerned, you're as close to an anarchist as a fucked up hovian can get.

Not a Jovian nor a hovian pipper. It did occur to me as you welcomed me back so joyously, that the devotion of this group to badmouthing Stowe so publicly for years, stalking every article appearing anywhere and any supporter to the point of character assassination being a step below what in actuality did happen- that it did have a cumulative impact. In part it had the effect of helping to dry up his sources of help (Help = people willing to give him free stuff he is too lazy-arsed to actually work for), and in essence eventually forced (I remember it well when the SA mob showed up armed and told him go to South America or we shoot) this ill-prepared (exactly right on that one) journey to South America in search of a place to put his ship where he might be able afford the very needed serious repairs after three long years at sea, for which he prepared well and at extreme length (by grifting and conning for all he was worth as opposed to actually fixing his POS boat).
guilty? Moi? No, my dear pip, not I.

when id i e'er request he be admired?
the criticism he's received is often quite understandable
he's certainly an odd duck, oozing charisma, a uniquely unforgettable character in his own drama.
at times i think i may have appealed for a bit of ....well, kindness and compassion instead of an overflowing of anger and what at times appeared to be real hate.
solidarity and perhaps some support for a fellow sailor upon the ocean, instead of constant condemnation, often of a type undeserving and uninformed, although i imagine this group would never consider themselves "uninformed" about anything under the sun.

That is just so much bull shit, RW. He is a comedic target because he invented his own caricature. He had his 5 minutes, but feels he's entitled to more - just like he feels entitled to everything else in life. You, RW, coming here and criticizing people for not stepping up and lending a hand to your favorite narcissist are an enabler. The people here and the world as a whole don't owe Reid Stowe a thing - not a dime, not a hand, and not fame. His boat is in disrepair because he allowed it to fall into disrepair.
His sources of help might have left him because he pulled a bait and switch. He was proclaiming a great scientific expedition to study the ozone hole and then posts on his page asking if anyone knows where it is. He's going to study the impact of global warming on the oceans of the world with daily measurments and the only thermometer he apparently has on board is built into a JC Penny wall clock. After he bilked people out of their money for this journey of exploration and science, he changes the entire focus from a "Mars analogous journey" to the "love voyage". You think his supporters might have been just a tad disappointed to see how the dollars they invested in this project to benefit all of mankind were spent?
"Voyage to the Mystic Jungles of Guyana", my ass. He found a bunch of naive kids with credit cards and strong backs to help him deliver a 2kt shit-box to a third-world boatyard.
Oh....and welcome back, RW, I've missed you.

This is the photo just before the launching of the then-named Tantra Schooner in 1978. I see what you mean about the prop. It seems to be built more into the keel, which has a semicircle cut out for it. The bottom of the rudder is attached to the keel as you can see. Just thought I would post this photo so we can all agree that the schooner looked seaworthy at one point in its lifetime.
