Went and checked out the J70 this weekend. They told me 200 sold so far--fact or fiction?
Customers or dealers?
There are still two of them sitting in the water at Sail California SF. I think they are a little slow gaining traction in this area.

One of them is sold, the other is available with a trailer for just under 53K.

53K??
$52,745 to be exact...that includes the sails, trailer, and outboard (ie the stuff you'll need anyway) but does not include our calif sales tax and DMV reg, etc.
It is a slick looking boat, to be sure. It looks a bit more modern than my Ultimate 20 but it essentially the same type of boat, just with a smaller cabin and longer cockpit.

Sounds like quite a dealer markup! As has been mentioned before, the fleet price with trailer and sails is $44,900. Motor is an additional $1K for a Honda 4-stroke

Dealer markup is one possiblility,
Transportation to West Coast maybe more?
Extra set of sails? (why I don't know)
Full set of boat covers etc?
Extra gear on the trailer (gear box, etc?)
Could be alot of things...

new viper retails for 35k with sails and trailer (since you asked).
Actually it's $33,245 right now (Naptown Boat Show and Long Beach Strictly Sail price) and oh yeah, includes YOUR choice or North, Ullman or Doyle/Boston Sails and trailer too :-)
Come by and check out the US built Viper, the UK built K6 and YES our new K1 (singlehanded sporty) at Annapolis.
We also have US built Viper at the upcoming Strictly Sail Show in Long Beach.

200 J-70s means 400 winches.
That's an awful lot of winches for a "sport boat" fleet.

Wow !
Viper at $34k winter special
U20 under $40k
J/70 at $54k
Its interesting how many times the J-70 price has been quoted at $45K, yet people still come up with this odd ball numbers?

The PNW dealer, Sail Northwest, is having a demo weekend at Shilshole Marina this Saturday and Sunday 11am - 3:30pm...I'm hoping to slip away from some weekend commitments to get in a sail.

Jerryd - nice try, but Im going to call BS on your last post. "odd ball numberss" I doubt that. Show us a pricing sheet for the J70 with the total being 45K and then I'll agree with you. I think its pretty safe to say that probably the base price with no sails, motor, and trailer is 45K. Can anyone fact check this?
I have ordered one in the last month at that is the correct number for the boat, base trailer, and sails. I added a few small options to the trailer and will get the motor on my own this winter.
The high price may reflect the dealer trying to get a premium for a boat that is there and waiting to be taken home immediately.
I know that I am scheduled for a spring delivery, so if someone does not want to wait, then pay the premium.

That is good that you are getting the boat for that price. I think then the issue becomes why is there such a variation in price between dealers, where you dont get this say with the viper or melges. To me I have always felt the dealer way of selling boats, especially sportboats is a little old school. Anyone else feel that way?
i don't think we have confirmation of anyone selling the boats for anything other than the $44.9k price - do we?

The price range is exactly related to the concept of a third party ie Dealer being involved. This is also why smaller boats with far far smaller opportunity for sales profit are almost ALWAYS handled in more of a direct sales type model vs dealer sales. Talk to any yacht broker and they will tell you selling a 20ft trailer sailor takes just as long as it does for them to sell a 40ft First B-boat which has many thousands of dollars profit for them vs what $1200 or maybe even $500 in the J/70 pending what the dealer was able to get the buyer to bite on.

I have the price sheet: $52,745, but yes that does include sails, trailer, "deliver" to the left coast, and an outboard.
