No idea really, but looks to be bigger then 55ft

It sort of reminds me of Lion New Zealand, so id guess in the 70ft range

Yup - that's what it is. The owner apparently had it shipped from the west coast. It was in Port Credit for a while but has been in Hamilton for a few years now. I've never seen it leave the dock...

In to:
Who took that photo of the Soverel? Is it your's? I may like to use it if that's OK in an upcoming article in GOB on the IOR. That stern is a perfect example of the AGS/AIGS distortion. If you pass that way again could you get a close up of the stern. I will give photo credit. GOB can't run pics without getting an Ok from the photographer.

Oh boy, that brings back memories. We won the 84 Kenwood "Hate the State Race" (and the Kenwood too, as part of the US Blue team) on that one, with Mark S and The Whale and a crowd of disreputables. A seriously loaded-up rig. There are some good pix of her in the SF Big Boat Series later that summer which I'll try to dig out and scan.

Yeah, a 55-footer wearing a 4-spreader in-line fractional rig with runners of Death and possibly a textbook example of contorted sterns ?

If that's not the answer to "Why IOR Needed to Die" I don't know what is.

Before you answer, ask yourself if you'd rather sail this or a TP52.

The TP 52 would be fast and fun...... But it wouldn't give you the same rush as cheating death on that Sov.

prolly not. But then Swiftsure wound up with a cool rebuild in time for Transpac thanks to those rocks

uhhhh - no!

hard enough to keep a J-105 off the rocks. Fun to transit the North Channel with it though, just don't try to go into the anchorages.

We saw a C&C51 in the back back bay of Croker Island once. Had to rub my eyes first before it sank in.

I dare say this thing draws a shitload more water though.

Nevermind. Someone said "cruiser" and N Channel popped in brain.

Looks like the "new cruising interior" consists of canvas covers over the cubbies. The rest is original (although I think the cushions used to be red. Maybe new covers on those is part of the new cruising interiior too)

Oh, man. Those vertical paneled genoas...Sobstad's worst contribution to sail design, I believe. Wire sheet with the splice right in the turning block? And a quarter wake that might scare Laird Hamilton.

So little time...so much to forget.

The leech cut genoas were North "innovations", from the Schnack. The draft was reduced for Transpac, but the cut off portion was reattached later that summer before the BBS in SF. She carried a unique winch handle custom made for the runners. 18" long, double grip with a ratchet. It was barely enough to get the runner up to sailing load. And the runners, sheets, guys and halyards were 7 x 19 plow steel wire rope. Loops and brummel splices are child's play compared to a wire rope splice.
