Tom Ehman is the Vice Commodore of Golden Gate YC, and the Executive Director of America's Cup Properties, Inc.

The 34th America's Cup is the eleventh straight AC campaign for Tom Ehman. A consummate veteran of international yachting, he has been at the forefront of many of the changes and innovations that have transformed top-level sailing into the modern, professional and more media-friendly sport that it is today. Notably, Tom spearheaded on-the-water umpiring that has been used in the America's Cup since he instituted it for the 1992 Cup in San Diego.

A former collegiate and North American sailing champion, and winner of the 1976 Championship of Champions, at age 25 he became the youngest-ever Executive Director of the USA's national sailing association - indeed, the youngest of any
national governing body for an Olympic sport in America.

Since he started with the America's Cup in 1980, Tom has served in many roles including rules advisor, team executive, event manager, and chairman of the Challenger Commission. He is the only person of long-standing involvement in the Cup who has worked only for American campaigns - New York YC, San Diego YC, St. Francis YC, and now Golden Gate YC.

For the past three campaigns, Tom was Head of External Affairs for ORACLE Racing. He now serves as GGYC Vice Commodore and Managing Director of the GGYC America's Cup Committee, and is Executive Director of America's Cup Properties, Inc.

America's Cup Principal Race Officer to Speak at Southwestern YC, Nov. 8

SAN DIEGO -- John Craig -- the principal race officer responsible for conducting the America's Cup World Series, the Louis Vuitton Cup, the America's Cup Challenger Series and the America's Cup Finals -- will speak at a fundraising event at Southwestern Yacht Club Nov. 8.

He will discuss the first two America's Cup World Series events in Cascais, Portugal and Plymouth, England and will preview the upcoming America's Cup World Series in San Diego, describing how technology has changed the game of race management.

"The new look to the America's Cup -- with the wing-sailed catamarans, the new format and race course innovations, and the media integration -- will be incredible," Craig said. "As principal race officer, it will be a challenge to develop and implement all of this, but I think the result will be exciting racing on a scale we've never seen before."

Craig is a former Canadian Olympic team coach and a board member of US Sailing, with more than 10 years of race management experience. He has run approximately 300 regattas on San Francisco Bay.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. Nov. 8. The cost is $65 per person and includes appetizers and a dinner of top sirloin and scallops, salad, vegetables, rolls and butter. Part of this fee will support Southwestern YC Finn sailor and Alpha Graphics Team member Caleb Paine's quest to medal for the U.S. in the 2016 Olympic Games.

be open to the public on Wednesday, Nov 9th. Get an insider's look of the

Unveiling the trophy will be Tom Ehman, Vice Commodore of Golden Gate Yacht

Cupdate 2011Don't tell me people aren't interested in the "new look America's Cup." And don't try to sell that notion to any of the 200+ people who flooded our clubhouse last Tuesday. Yes, we opened the clubhouse on a Tuesday - a day the club is normally dark - specifically so our members and members of the Santa Monica Bay sailing community could hear the latest details about Cup competition and about the America's Cup World Series. The next ACWS regatta is November 12-20 in San Diego. No one left disappointed. Our speaker, Tom Ehman, Vice Comm. of the Cup-holder Golden Gate YC and Executive Director of America's Cup Properties Inc., was at the top of his game. For nearly two hours he dazzled the overflow audience with compelling stories, images and video of the new AC45 catamarans racing (and crashing) at venues around the globe. And you could hear a pin drop as he provided exclusive and insightful updates about the preparations for the "big show" on San Francisco Bay in 2013. The lure of the America's Cup is still very much alive, and Ehman's ability to satisfy - albeit charm - an audience seems to grow with each of his annual appearances at CYC. Tom Ehman dropped by Long Beach Yacht Club Thursday night to talk about the America's Cup.



Okay, you ask, "Who's Tom Ehman?"



He is the Vice Commodore of the Golden Gate Yacht Club in San Francisco. Yes, the very same club that currently has possession of the America's Cup and will defend that honor against all comers on San Francisco Bay in 2013.



Previously, he was Head of External Affairs for Oracle Racing for the past three America's Cup (AC) campaigns, so you can see he has a bit of experience with this historic yacht racing event.



Ehman is also a past member of LBYC and good friends with many of our staff commodores and members.



"We are coming up on 160 years and the 34th edition of the America's Cup in 2013." Ehman said, "and I've been involved in the America's Cup since 1980, but it's all new now and I believe we are at the pinnacle of our sport.


"It's great to see the young sailors with us tonight. You know, they are our future for the America's Cup."



He talked about the history of the America's Cup and how, in 1851, the Americans built a specially designed sailing yacht named "America" and sailed it across the Atlantic to compete in Great Britain's Annual Regatta around the Isle of Wight.



Ehman said the boat's design was so revolutionary that the Americans were far ahead of the rest of the fleet during the race. When they crossed the finish line winning the race, Queen Victoria was in attendance and asked who was second, at which the famous answer was given, "Your Majesty, there is no second."



The cup, known then as the R.Y.S. ₤100Cup because it was valued at 100 British pounds, was brought back to New York Yacht Club and renamed after the winning yacht "America."



Ehman covered the evolution of sailboat racing and the America's Cup over the years up to the 33rd America's Cup campaign in 2010 in Valencia, Spain when GGYC's trimaran "USA-17" won a decisive victory over Société Nautique de Genève's "Alinghi 5" and brought the cup back home to America.



"In the 2010 America's Cup," Ehman said, "with BMW Oracle's trimaran we were going 30 plus knots in only 7-8 knots of breeze. Those boats sail about two to three times the wind speed. The live coverage and the excitement that it generated was tremendous. People all over the world were watching.



"So, for 2013 we decided we will again be sailing multihulls. We created the America's Cup World Series which will be sailed in AC45s [catamarans]. These are all new, wing-sail boats in which all of them are identical."



He explained that the 2013 America's Cup will be sailed in the larger AC72 catamarans, basically the same wing-sail design as the AC45s, but larger… and faster.



"The AC45s have a crew of five," said Ehman, "and the AC72s have a crew of 11. It's a lot more boat and you need the extra crew."



He reviewed the America's Cup World Series schedule from 2011 through 2013 saying that there may be an opportunity for Long Beach to host an event in 2013.



LBYC member John Sangmeister and Ehman were recently together in Plymouth, England for a stop on the ACWS tour and Sangmeister talked about that experience and the possible opportunity for a date for Long Beach.



"We have been working very hard to bring this to Long Beach," Sangmeister said. "I had the privilege of going to Plymouth and saw the most exciting racing I've ever seen. We want to encourage everyone to go to San Diego [Nov. 12-20] to see this series."



Ehman added "We have a small opportunity in their calendar. We've been working with the City of Long Beach and the mayor. This would be a major event!"



Ehman talked about an idea the America's Cup World Series has been considering, "For the kids, we have something we are thinking of. Why can't we get a Junior America's Cup going? Maybe we can get them time on the AC45s to experience the excitement… to motivate them in this sport."



He then challenged the Junior Sailors in attendance to create their own America's Cup team, to set up the organization, the boats, the team and crew.



"It's all about getting the kids involved and keeping their interest," said Ehman.



"We think sailboat racing is the best sport to learn good sportsmanship, to keep physically fit and learn how to be good leaders."



Ehman ended his presentation by saying, "We've got to change the sport and we've got to do it together."

Lecture on America’s Cup technology at IYRS
On May 22, Stan Honey, the director of technology for the America’s Cup, will make a special appearance at International Yacht Restoration Center in Newport. He will discuss the technology behind the America’s Cup, including TV graphics, race operations and umpiring.

Honey is a two-time Emmy winner and a major figure in technological innovation in sports television. He is also a world-class competitor and a winning Volvo Ocean Race navigator, Rolex Yachtsman of the Year, and navigator onboard the Jules Verne Trophy record-setter, Groupama 3.

America's Cup racing is coming to San Francisco Bay on August 21, with a six-day America's Cup World Series event. John Craig, Principal Race Officer of the America's Cup, will join Sausalito YC AC34 committee members for a special briefing at SYC on Thursday, June 14 at 6 p.m. "If you have questions about the Cup," writes committee Chair Matthew Naythons, "or want to volunteer to help AC34 on land or at sea, this is a one-hour meeting you cannot miss." The meeting is open to the public, and reservations are not required.

Thank you to Tom Ehman for his entertaining and informative lecture on the quickly approaching America’s Cup World Series and the following America’s Cup races. Visitors came to the Museum this week to hear the “AC34 Cupdate” and watch amazing footage of the new catamarans. Tom, the Vice Commodore of the Golden Gate Yacht Club, wandered through the crowd introducing others involved with the Cup and entertaining guests with his sense of humor. The entertaining presentation was not without informing details of the history of the cup and fascinating information on the new technology being used in AC34. Tom introduced Stan Honey and the LiveLine team who are designing state of the art technology that will allow viewers to watch the races like never before -essentially allowing data to be overlaid on the real time footage of the races.

Our audience, prompted by Tom’s enthusiasm, left fully prepared for the amazing racing that will be taking place in Newport from June 26 to July 1 with trials from June 23 to 26. We are pleased to be exhibiting in the America’s Cup Village at Fort Adams. The exhibit will be in the Exploration Zone located at the center of the fort. The Exploration Zone is a place for visitors to gather to learn about the state of Rhode Island from technology and marine science to history and preservation. The Museum’s Hall of Fame plaques will be relocated to the Fort for this amazing display with our fellow organizations.

We are looking forward to the busy weeks ahead and we hope to see you at the Museum or down in Newport at Fort Adams!

There are full time paid people (supposed long time AC professionals) who have highlighted their name in lights continuously who are the appropriate individuals to address the negative ramifications of their actions that will unfold in the near future - like long-time sponsors suddenly leaving, but I hope I'm wrong.

Like the way the Kithcart situation was mishandled, look for the carpet to be raised, the brooms to come out, and the excuses to fly as this will be much more visible.

I can state first hand that some on the staff lack any sort of professionalism to those that actively support the event, and I can assure you they know very well of their immature actions that just recently took place, on Tinsley Island to be specific.

But I guess old man Farnsworth wanted to put a couple of hours on the new 7x, so hopped up there for a couple of days.

All he said upon return was "Son, what happens in Tinsley, stays in Tinsley."

You just don't ask a guy like old man Farnsworth anything else about the incident when he makes a statement like that, with such finality.

Agreed, however I will state I've been racing for ~ 30 years against a wide range of competitors, mostly very professional, and ~never~ have I seen an "apparent" adult > 50 stoop to the level of a 12 year old, maybe less, to express his opinion of another sailor based on purely political motives, without any provocation whatsoever, Tinsley island or not.

Be assured this will not rest, simply because the sport doesn't need this type of horseshit, at any level let alone at the AC level.
