Great work and great progress!
What filler do you use with epoxy for making bog?

The last three days working on the hull cedar stripping, just need to tidy up a few points then the carbon wrap, such an easy build for the amateur i just need more time to play boat builder. I start on the keel next week.

The sides you can see in black are carbon over foam and I will be laying the carbon cloth over the timber to the sides, The panels you can see in the back ground for the deck , floor and internal stations etc are e-glass / foam, dramatic saving $$ over a small weight increase.
Cheers

A launch date has been set in Dunedin, Friday 25th at the Port Yacht Club. Will do the launch about 6pm, followed by BYO takeaways and then a talk by the designer Dan Leech - and of course some beers.

Attached photos - finishing the keel and bulb - picking up the hull to do the keel install - Graeme driving the 25T crane in the club shed thanks.

How goes the building in Oz?

Can I ask what the plan set for the 6.5 from Dan Leech costs? Maybe somebody can PM me the number. I'm curious as I think building something like this could be a lot of fun.

Thanks

Fitting the bulb seemed to go OK until I got home. Hmm do I chainsaw a bit off the fin or the carport.

Launching at the Port Yacht Club on Friday 25 is on at 6 - all welcome. Dan Leech the designer will be there if you're interested in one of his boats. Magnus Doole the designer of the sails is going to do a presentation after food and a beer. He's got plenty to talk about :-) has been a grinder on AC boats, done the Atlantic record on a 100' ketch and ...

Looks good sporty. Out project has stalled for a bit at the moment :-( we will be building an alloy trailer as well to keep the towing weight down and avoid having to have brakes on the trailer. They aren't heavy boats so they don't need a heavy duty trailer.

I got the trailer made locally - by the time you get a steel trailer galvanised there was no saving with steel. I don't have the skills to make trailer from either material whereas some people will be able to make a steel one themselves. Complete alloy trailer was $4300

Is that orange antifouling at the keel?
From what manufacturer?
I used some on my boat but when you touch it by hand it's leave a orange paint on a hand.
Don't to mentioned when you try to clean the keel with sponge.

Great progress, just a little more to go, I hope you are excited about launching.

Altex 2 pot. I am over antifouling paint. That's one of the reasons I built this thing.

First race over - the race was an unscheduled one so after a little persuasion the RO agreed to a Landfall Tower race. This is a favourite - a beat of 4 miles or so to the harbour heads and then a couple more miles to buoy off-shore and return. You can usual hope for a good spinnaker run on the way back as the afternoon sea breeze builds.

Designer Dan was on the boat and Magnus Doole the North Sails designer. Having never sailed a 1980's IOR 1/2 ton boat for the last few years the presence of these two was a very good thing. Big asymmetrics are a whole new thing to learn.

Mostly too many new things going on to process them all. Key things that struck me were
  • the boat was stable and easy to move around on in the tacks and gybes, I was expecting it to be twitchy
  • the difference between too high and too low downwind seemed small - but most of that I think I can learn with practice
  • similarly the tiller was very sensitive as speed increased - another thing to learn to do better
  • everything worked - all the fittings and layout were spot on - thanks Dan
  • Otago harbour gets real small sailing downwind
  • the 3DL sails looked amazing - no hooks, wrinkles or other nasties. I paid slightly more than I could have but I got the advantage of their designers using the data supplied by Southern Spars to make sure everything worked together
  • now that the rockstar crew have gone home we will put the big blue spinnaker away for a while and get the small one out
The result - a well sailed Young 88 beat us out to the buoy by 100m+. After the downwind run back we were well ahead, maybe 15 min or so. Some parts of the channel suited us - particularly the reachy bits. The Young caught up where they were able to go straight downwind and we had to gybe.

Thank you for all the kind comments plus thank you to all the numerous people to help along the way.

Let us know when you hit 35kts though ;)

"The lightweight 6.5m long vessel was designed by Dan Leech, of Christchurch, and is capable of reaching speeds of up to 35 knots - something he hopes to experience on Otago Harbour this weekend."

Don't believe everything you read in the papers I suppose

You should look at taking a trip up to the Port Nic regatta in Wellington next year. There are usually a couple of Shaw 650's and other similar sized boats racing there. Good regatta

If anyone out there is going to Oamaru this weekend and wants a ride come and ask - i'll try and fit a few in on Saturday after the racing.

Rob and the Te Waka crew

thanks for the Wellington tip - that's a bit more doable than a trip to Auckland.

Well we have finally finished planking the hull this weekend. W just need to fair the timber and bag our hull sides before we sheath the whole hull so we can pop it off the jig. Nearly everything else for our boat is sitting in my shed waiting for the hull to be flipped and carbon'd. should start to see some good progress once the hull is up the right way!

Really is a pity to cover up the timber work, torcher board and clear epoxy finish?

No idea what foil shape it is, I just got te 3d file and had the foil blanks machined.

It would look pretty sweet with a clear timber bottom and clear coat carbon sides, one day when I win the lotto that could be a reality..... Maybe....
