I'm hoping to be at the start in my center console photographing and videoing the start. Plz PM me if you'd like me to try to photo/video your boat. No charge, but no guarantees of quality either!

Can't do it on Samba unfortunately, no inboard engine.

Backwards. Pineapple is warm up for Bermuda, cause just about the time you are over it in the Pineapple, you make a right turn and blast down to Jamaica!

Looking for a ride as my usual boat will cruising in Newfoundland this year.
Is it doing the Route Halifax-St Pierre Race?
RHSP 2012
There's also the Ocean One Race after that.

Noob here... I would be interested.... however. Single handers not welcome? WTF. This is a typical east coat establishment race, low budget sailors need not apply. Evidently if I don't get down on my knees and service Yanmar I am not welcome. Totally lame, are you racing or not?
First of all, in keeping with SA tradition, fuck off noob and show us your girlfriend's tits.
Second of all, you are correct, the Newport-Bermuda race has no single handed division, as is the case for pretty much all the Bermuda races including Marion-Bermuda, Charleston-Bermuda and Annapolis-Bermuda. I'd recommend you take a look at Bermuda 1-2, in which you'll find a terrific group of Corinthian style racers, many on modest budgets and all serious short handed competitors. Run on odd years, the next start is slated for June 8, 2013 which will give you enough time to prepare if you begin now. The NOR probably won't be posted until the fall of 2012 but you can use the 2011 NOR as a starting point for required safety gear. The race organizer, Roy Guay, does a fantastic job running the race and periodically sends newsletters and updates to competitors so get on his email list if you're serious about entering. There are also 2x/year gatherings of past and prospective competitors in Newport if you're in the area. Look no further if you seek a worthy goal on which to set your sights. You will be challenged, I guarantee it. Hope to see you out there.

Thanks guys. My Express 27 is not welcome in the Bermuda 1-2, this is a common theme on the east coat. Seriously, an inboard required for a sailboat race? Looks like I will need to trailer my boat 3K miles... or maybe I should just do some pirate action.
Boy, you give up easy, don't you. If you would take the time to read the NOR, you'll see there's no mention of an inboard engine required. I know of at least five boats who entered this year whose auxiliary engine was an outboard. Your ineligibility lies in section 6.1 of this year's NOR where the minimum length is specified at 28 feet. Time for a 12" bowsprit. Get on it.

Have you ever done a BDA race? While you could get there on an E 27, this is not a downwind race like the TP. There are a handfull of races over the last several years that you would not wanted to have been crossing the Gulf Stream in an Express 27 with the wind on your nose. Thanks guys. My Express 27 is not welcome in the Bermuda 1-2, this is a common theme on the east coat. Seriously, an inboard required for a sailboat race? Sure you could do it. But why?
There is also limited space in BDA for dockage, and not usually a shortage of boats that want to go.
Is your Express 27 ready to satisfy all the safety requirements? That alone can run you more than $10k. On a 42 footer that had already sailed the race (under different owner), it cost nearly 20k to get her complient. You also need a percentage of race veterans in your crew, who have satisfied the SAS program.
Sorry you can't take your boat, but I think it is for your own safety. Whay don't you hitch a ride?

Outboards are fine for the Bermuda 1-2. I do the race and my boat has an outboard. Put a small fixed bowsprit or a little scoop on the stern and you're in. Awesome race!

Sorry, but you specifically said "My Express 27 is not welcome in the Bermuda 1-2" and then referenced the need for an inboard engine. That comment is not accurate with regard to the Bermuda 1-2. For the 1-2, you would simply need to do as a couple people have suggested - add a 12" sprit or sugar scoop.
As for the Newport Bermuda race, the organizers have exercised their perogative to have certain standards that they view as appropriate for safety. They are proud of their very, very long track record of safety and take some aggressive measures to make sure that it remains safe. It certainly can be argued that their standards are a bit of over kill, but it is their right. I have personally witnessed several situations in both races where in inboard engine was pretty valuable for an owner that was no longer able to race and needed to get back to shore, and I have seen negative consequences where an owner was not able to get back to shore under power for a variety of reasons.
Like others said - make the relatively minor modification to your boat to add 12"s and enter the Bermuda 1-2. It has the single handing you want, allows for an outboard and the people are great.

Of course Paladin is the boat to beat here as they took the division in 2010 and, as usual, did great in the DH events around Long Island Sound last year including winning the Double Handed Ocean Racing Trophy (DHORT).
It's great to see Lora Ann on the list as well. I thought Rich did some racing on Carina at Fastnet and Sydney-Hobart (or was that his son?) so I wasn't sure if he was going.
I'm not sure how many races Joe Harris has entered on his new (I think) Class 40 but I can only hope he hasn't figured out all its secrets yet, lest he crush us all.
Scott Miller on Resolute trounced me more than once last year so it's clear he'll be giving us some trouble.
My buddy Tom on Whisper claims to be in intensive training right now but I'm not buying it. I offered to lighten his boat up with my chainsaw over the winter months but he declined.
Any intel on the other entries would be helpful - I'm not familiar with them. One surprise was seeing the J35 Great Scott entered fully crewed. They took 2nd place DH in 2010 and I was hoping to face them again. What gives?

Rich kept the boat on the hard in 2011 to focus on racing with his family on Carina in their worldwide tour. Gloves are back off in 2012.

The real rule for inboards is actually in the ISAF OSR at 3.28.1(e). The mention of the inboard in the NOR is unnecessary.

Still trying to learn. I will read that document and keep practicing.
The NOR mentions a SI requirement of 115, which is an issue for my boat (107.2). There are a some boats that are borderline with that requirement that are entered (J-35 for example). Did the owners modify the boat or don't I understand something?
Thanks

Here are the Bermuda Race entries to date.
There appear to be about 90 boats entered to date. No Rambler or RAN yet or even an Avalanche or another 395. Avra is no longer identified as a modified J120 and she appears to be racing in Gibbs Hill. Is there a new boat and will George have pros on board? There are 5 J44s registered, which is another impressive turnout from that group.
Anything else interesting?

BORC prescribes that all competitors should attend the CCA Safety-at-Sea Seminar and Pre-Race briefing to be held in Newport March 17, 2012 (on March 18 there is a Race Preparations seminar, a First Aid and CPR Course, and a Hands On Training Course) or other sanctioned Safety-at-Sea Seminar.

"There is a new rule. A minimum of 30% of all crew members shall have attended a US SAILING-sanctioned safety-at-sea seminar within five years of the start of the race. The captain and either the navigator or a watch captain must be included in the required 30%. In addition, two members of each crew must hold a First-Aid/CPR certificate. For Double-Handed Division yachts, both crewmembers must attend a seminar"
Pretty sure MHOR and RHSP both require 30% for SAS as well, don't know when they put the requirement in, anyone know?

yes, the rule is 30% as LH stated.
The spirit is that all crew members are encouraged to attend, but not required to, other then the skipper, watch captain/navigator.
Thanks to all for raising the requirement issue.
We look forward to seeing all those who are able to make it to SUNY Maritime on April 14th, but obviously do also encourage participants to attend one of the SAS events if possible before this season gets underway.

Excellent. It would make my year to see the words "Fucking Seabiscuit" on this thread again so I'll do my best to torment.
I saw 40 Degrees and Bodacious Dream on there as yet undecided on division - do you know if they're thinking DH?
In 2010, we had a good warm up in the DH division of the Block Island Race, which included 8 Bermuda Race participants among the 16 boats entered. Seabiscuit's planning to be there again this year. (Note: I don't like to promote this race because historically they've excluded me from entering my boat but if I can face some good DH competition on my buddy's boat by posting this link, I suppose it's worth it.)

For the Class 40's, the warm up is going to be the Atlantic Cup. 645 miles from Charlston to NYC for the first leg, 180 miles from NYC to Newport for the second leg, and then in-shore racing in Newport on Memorial Day weekend. Its gonna be a kick ass fleet.

NOR is up as of 12/2/2011. Time to start planning. Who is in?
Can you climb into a life raft in your full inflated PFD with foulies and boots on, even in a swimming pool ? Try it at the Practical, Hands on Training Safety Seminar at the CCA SAS seminar in Newport RI.
The Newport Bermuda Race Safety at Sea Seminar on March 17-18 introducesa new approach to safety education. The seminar serves sailors in the 2012Newport Bermuda Race as well as delivery and crews returning from Bermuda and otheroffshore sailors. It is also perfect forskippers and crews on coastal racers plus ocean and coastal cruisers, too. ThisCruising Club of America seminar is at the Newport (RI) Hyatt Regency Hotel on Goat Island.
Register at http://www.bermudara...90/Default.aspx in advance. Orfor those who choose to register at the door in Newport, walk-ins are welcome.
On Saturday, March 17, the seminar offers two tracks. The morning 'refresher course' is for anybodywho has attended two or more US SAILING certified safety seminars since 2002.Participants may then do hands-on, in-water survival training in the afternoon. They will earn an ISAFApproved Certificate in one day. The other track is the All-day Safety atSea seminar for people who have not attended a safety seminar recently.
On Sunday, there are two all-day courses— the Practical, Hands on Training Safety Seminar that combines with Saturday's all day Safety at Sea Seminar to awardthe ISAF Approved Offshore Personal Survival Course certificate anda Red Cross First Aid and CPR training course. In addition, a Newport Bermuda Race Preparation Seminar aimedspecifically at Bermuda Race sailors will be held in the morning.
More information about the CCA Safety at Sea Seminar and a link to directregistration and details about the Newport Bermuda Race are at www.BermudaRace.com.

I have tons of highly competitive distance experience for my age and am a past winner of M2H, around BI, Vineyard (2x) and ALIR. Racked up 2300+ distance sailing miles just in the last year alone. Lots of offshore racing experience on boats of all sizes up to 66 feet and at the time of the race I'll be SAS, CPR, First Aid, AED certified. My calendar is wide open starting May 16th to help with any boat prep, measurement, practice (Edlu, Around Block, etc) or deliveries (to NPT, from BDA) that may be on your calendar.
I know that it's getting late but hopefully someone, somewhere, knows of something. This is a big bummer after having a major conflict come up last time around.
I have a full resume/reference list if anyone wants to hear more.
THANKS!

Well the plan as of a while ago was that I would go to Bermuda on my regular ride. This however became impossible when my regular ride recently decided not to compete in the race - major bummer but understandable. So SA community, I'm left with a problem. I've already cleared out late June, signed up for a SAS course in April and no longer have a boat to go south on. This leaves me asking... does anyone know of a boat with space for a fun, competitive, versatile, dedicated, hearty college sailor?
THANKS!

Does that resume include the Cabin Boy duties?

where are you finding this? I just tried Kayak and orbitz. Unless I want to spend 9 hours traveling for what should be a 2 hr flight I cannot find anything that cheap.

I went through Kayak to Orbitz and bought the ticket - there were other decent fares, too, so I don't understand why you didn't find them.

I've seen a few people mentioning Dogsled in their posts, makes me wonder how many here will be racing on her come June
HW
However many can pay to sail without their check bouncing.
