I'm 5' 9" with a medium-light build. I'd go right up to 175, if I stopped consuming insane amounts of energy. 163 is OK for me and, at age 55, my main priority is preserving muscle, but I could go to the mid 150s without cutting into essentials.
I'm at about 163 after holiday binging and will try for 158 by bikini season, while adding a little upper body muscle.
I can't match you guys, but I am trying to get from 168 to 160.
How tall are you that 163 is too big.
I'm 5'10" at 168 and am trying to GAIN weight. I wish to be and have been trying to be 175 again for years now.

Add a morning dip at Sandshoes tidal pool and you're made.
Tried it last week, bracing in a southerly.

I always hated brussels sprouts. Then I met my (now) wife, and more to the point, my (now) sister-in-law.
omg! asparagas is the bomb!
tell ya what... i will trade all the oatmeal and corn for all the asparagas, lima beans (doghouse can have some), beets and brussel sprouts. what else do you guys not like?
Brocolli, and califlower. You can have those too. If I had not been forced to eat all of these as a kid, I might feel differently. But outside of a smoked brussel sprout I ate a couple years ago, I have not eaten any of it since, and god willing never will.
The secret is bacon. And caramelizing to a nice frilly light brown while not overcooking. And, I repeat, good bacon. What the French would call lardons.
I'm a convert.
Enough bacon to give your brussels sprouts a nice flavor is not a serious problem for any but the most extreme diet.
I've also gone from being merely ok with asparagus to being a fan. EVOO, sea salt and pepper, maybe a sprinkle of balsamic, and grill until barely crunchy. Or roast if it's too cold to fire up the grill.
I've also learned to appreciate greens - chard, kale, spinach, collards. Supposedly about the most healthful thing you can eat, and kale is still in season. I usually saute with a couple of cloves of sliced garlic and some EVOO. The SIL's collards with smoked ham hocks were outrageous this Thanksgiving, but too much work and way too much fat and salt.
No on the beets, oatmeal mush and lima beans. Even I have limits.
EVOO & Salt, roast the kale 'til a touch crunchy is also awesome.

At 6' I weighed 175 as a freshman in college. I still took a 44 jacket for my shoulders & chest, but had to take in the stomach and sides to make that jacket fit because you could stuff a basketball in the stomach area. Not a "heavy" build, but broad across the shoulders for sure. Had about a 30 inch waist, maybe 32.
175 is a distant memory though...

We need a regular weight time or this will last about as long as a New Years hang over.
I say we do Friday morning weigh ins. And we also need to post photos - before and after
shots. To break the ice, I'll go first beciuase I have no pride. Has to be a recent photo (or one of similar weight status), preferably bathing suit.

Hey, same to you evo.
You're up early for a young-un on NYD.
Back in Bris-venice.
Drove down on Xmas day;
stayed with rellos on Ewos, near 'shoes.
Had a good time with family including Mum in Stella Maris.
Concerned about low Brownie points,
we left Thursday, hopefully retaining the ability to acquire more.

That is kind of you, I will rememeber. Plenty of family about, so should be fine - we had dozens at Xmas lunch.
I also hit it around then, but not for the same reasons.
I saw the CSC Friday night last October, chockers. Clearly, you werent there.
Nothing like when I was an MJ lil tacker; then you needed to find the care-taker in a good mood if you wanted a sail.
Seems they have replaced most dinghies with a new class called 'Cougars'.
I went looking downstairs but couldnt find one in the racks.
Perhaps you could show a foreigner the ropes?

i suppose i need to go get a scale now.
Move the slider foreward to 3:35 and listen to a simply fabulous oatmeal story!!

Have to control the portions. That's how Jenny Craig works. You start only eating certain things, the cravings for the stuff your body is asking for will always getcha in the end. There is no substitute for working out either. There should be something that raises the metabolism for a solid 6-7 hours in there too, a couple times a month. Call them "pack a lunch" hikes or bike rides.
No soft drinks. The diet ones stimulate the appetite for sugary stuff. Bad juju. Consider it all candy for kids.

shhhh...don't tell Woody. Younger brother always goes....seems to catch a few of those dinghies and always puts them back in the rack so i don't know what's going on there.

Yeah i am biased, as a short legged stocky person i had to be taped after ever PT test back in the military (at 5'6 and 165....<14% body fat..), according to that chart i am bordering obese now at 172
IMO the most important things you can track are blood pressure, at rest heart rate and body fat %. Just eat like your ancestors, whole grain, meat, big breakfast, non processed foods, more often in smaller amounts and do physical work. Just takes a little HTFU and what ever you do don't buy a bottle of Delirium Noel, drink all of it AND THEN notice that it is 10% ABV, damn next time i shouldn't start in with a couple3 bottles of cider. BTW woodchuck "winter" is pretty tasty.

this is a wee bit wrong ms elle. well made beer won't make a difference. what you eat with it will. don't eat when drinking beer
easy to allow some beer in the diet...on a daily basis. diet sodas not so much....aspartamanes (sp)??
if you try to lose weight quickly you will bounce back just as fast.

you think 20 some odd lbs in 3.5 months is pushing it? i'd be happy with the 11 in that time and the rest 3 more mths...or something...but 1 way or another both the weight and cigarettes have got to go.

i think that it works like a snowball rolling downhill....the longer you stay at it the faster it happens.
setting dates for weight (sailing) was how i got on the yoyo in the first place but it's probably different for everyone.
after a few years on the bounce it was time to change. just don't do what my brother did and go too far. It's taken 6 months to get him looking normal as opposed to skeletor.
if it's done right the muscle stays and light exercise (half hour brisk walk) is enough to sustain it. If you like swimming that's better but the exercise is just for tone. you are what you eat...as said above...if you don't want to look like a hamburger bun don't eat hamburger buns.
fresh food cooked with a minimum of additives and eaten at the right time of day worked best for me.....30kgs later (60 odd pounds or a metric shit tonne) am here to tell ya it works. difficult at first...get's easier as you go and then becomes part of life. You'll wish you knew it earlier. i did.
unfortunately 250lbs at 6'3" is till obese according to the BMI chart. then not a lot of fellas are 58" in the chest or have the shoulder width

I quit smokin when I was 45. Completely changed my body. I didn't gain weight right away. Wasn't until I started biking that I packed it on my butt and thighs. Couldn't fit into my harness anymore but my waist was about the same and then over the years, I've put on that 7 Lbs per year until now. And I do have a gut.

For a person who is pushing 250 or more, 23 pounds in 3 months is not much. But if I have been hearing you properly, you weigh in at somewhere between one plenty and one plenty five. 23 pounds in 3.5 months might be a pretty big percentage of body weight to lose in 3.5 months. 5 months its probably pretty safe.
I am a very successful dieter. After I hit my peak weight I lost 75 pounds on my own. No health club and no program. Unfortunately I am terrible at keeping the weight off. I have to decide if I am joining in on this SA program or not, I know I need to do something.

Diet sodas are a whole lot less dangerous then carrying around an extra 50 pounds. If they don't affect your hunger, drink away.

2 months ago my 14 year old daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, for us old folks its what they used to call juvenile diabetes. The name is sort of confusing because the cause of it is nothing like the cause of Type 2 Diabetes, which is what us fat older folks usually get. She is literally the most fit person I know. She was the MVP of her track team last spring, plays volleyball, basketball and softball. She can do more pushups then I ever could do and the only time I have seen her stop doing situps its because after 300 or so she starts to get bored. I'm not saying she is the most fit person in the world or that no one here is fitter. I am just trying to illustrate that at 5'5" 112 lbs she is not one of the big kids who you read about in the news who have type 2. I also don't want to hear from anyone how she must be out of shape or it was her diet or any other ill informed ideas of how a kid can develop type 1. In a nutshell, its auto immune and her body basically attacked her pancreas until it can no longer make insulin. Unless and until medical science can regrow the beta cells, transplant or make an artificial pancreas she will be insulin dependant for the rest of her life. I could go on about how she has responded to this challenge but I will leave it at this. She was in the ICU on Wednesday morning, and the next Monday she was trying out for the basketball team. She did a weeks worth of school work in one weekend just prior to the 1st quarter grades and kept her perfect record of all As.
Diabetes is a motherfucker and I am tempting it by not keeping my weight under control. I know my daughter would run through a wall if it would make it go away. So I figure by not doing anything its like I am flaunting it to her that I am overweight and almost 50, and I don't have it, in fact it almost would seem that I take my health from granted when in front of my eyes is someone who from the outside is the picture of health, yet has this incidious disease. I always thought you had to lose weight for yourself. But I know now that I have to lose it for myself and her. If she could eat less and exercise more to make it go away, she would. Its what I should do to keep it from happening.

beg to differ china....diet sodas (for whatever reason) will keep the 50lbs on. Red Bull, V...any of that crap the same. Thirsty? Drink water
It depends on what you are replacing the diet soda for. If its water you drink now, keep drinking it. But if you are a coke a cola drinker and are drinking 2000 calories a day in soda (and there are a lot of people who do that) switching to diet is a better choice then not. Is water better, sure. But not everyone can switch from the addiction to coke with its sugar and caffeine straight to water.

Thats the most wishy washy report I have ever read. Did you read it. It might be the diet soda, it might be the food you eat along with pop. It might be the carmel coloring, it might not be... Its not enough info to make a decision on, but we hope other studys are more complete...
Thats the problem with the studies I have seen on diet pop and artificial sweetners. It seems like they want to find something but then they aren't really sure what they have found. But what we know for sure is. Weighing 50 pounds too much, is bad for you in a multitude of ways.

All the best to your daughter. My wife is quite ill, fortunately we've found that the reality is less horrifying than common knowledge makes it out to be. I'm hoping you and your daughter will find that treatment is far more effective than you are now aware.
We had a local kid with much the same story. She was treated (ongoing of course), continued to play sports though not at the same intensity, graduated, married and the last I saw of her she was a drop dead gorgeous 30 y.o.

Diabetes is a motherfucker. And its whats been on my mind and has been making me think about my health in a different way.

We keep the positive spin on everything. But when you read the books and learn the risks. Its a bitch. With type one, since you have to count every carb you eat and then treat with insulin you can't make a mistake, its not the high sugar that can cause the most damage in the short term its the lows. Ad in the fact that at this stage her pancreas is still trying to make insulin and probably every now and then can produce a "good" squirt of it, thats dangerous. Because now you can have way too much insulin in your body which can lower your sugar to a much too low number. Coma, brain damage, seizures... One night she woke up felt shaky and checked her blood sugar, it was 38. At that point the brain isn't working right and fortunately she got a juice bag and started to get some sugar into her body. Then the long term risks of the high sugar, losing toes, heart and kidney problems. Its a scary proposition. This is the first time I have really laid it all out. I have had the thoughts in my mind, but at home and talking with her. Its all about how we handle it, and how to keep her life as normal and it always has been.
Sorry to hear about your wife, I hope she can keep it in check and maybe make the changes necessary to lessen the risks.

Present weight: 123.9 kg
No wonder I was afraid to step on a scale.
Target weight: 100 kg
Target date: 16 July 2012 i.e. Day 197
Target loss per week: 0.85 kg (1.9 lbs/wk)
I've got a chart up on the fridge now with all dates, daily goal number and space for comment.
The good news is that in the last couple of years my eating, drinking, and exercise habits have gotten SO bad that I have a lot of 'low hanging fruit' or opportunities to improve.
My dad has diabetes so that should be some motivation, though I usually don't remember that when standing in the chips aisle of the supermarket.
Had oatmeal for breakfast and am heading out in an hour to do a hike. Tomorrow it is sail handling drill with the 1st. Lt.
Still, we're gonna need a montage.

Not quite as colorful as the real thing, but a reaction I dont care for anymore.
I know 3 or 4 other people that have the same reaction to aspertame.

How does cutting back on diet drinks make you loose weight? I have to have my diet coke in the morning, as in now, or I'll kill somebody. It's 0 calories and lots of caffeine!
Sweet tastes in the mouth, or even the sight of sweets, can cause insulin to spike, which is not a good thing and promotes weight gain. However, the data are mixed, not all sweeteners seem to do it, and I think it's possible that this effect would go away in habitual diet soda drinkers whose bodies have learned that the sensory stimuli aren't followed by a sugar load.
I'll look into it a little more or ask someone, if I have time.

Although 170 would be nice I haven't seen that weight since 1979 and don't even know if that weight is possible without cutting off a limb. So, I don't have a hard number goal or rate of loss goal but I do like to see how many down or steady days I can string together without having an up day.
Years ago I bought a graph paper tablet and whenever I decide it is time to diet, I get it out, label the columns and rows with dates and weights respectively and color in a square every day.
As this goes on I will post a photo of the chart every once in a while.

Don't get too hung up on just having down or steady days and don't lose faith when the up days do happen. It's the long term trend that's what counts. There will be occasional up days even within that overall trend.

Thus I don't see how I can invert this into the breakfast-king, lunch-prince, dinner-pauper ... dinner with the kids and wife is important to me.
But I'll do what I can, and I appreciate this chance to do it with some other folks.
Current weight 210, target weight 180. If I shaved off my moustache I would probably be halfway there already. And it isn't really the weight that bothers me, I feel pretty good at 200 lbs. But I have a few Brooks Brothers suits from my 180 lbs days that I can't currently afford to replace.

A week ago I was 240, finished the last of the holiday left overs and started the South Beach diet Wednesday or Thursday. I was a little jittery and hungry the first few days but felt fine all of yesterday (Sunday).
So, in five days I've lost 2 lbs and the jitters (I'm guessing that was a sugar craving). Reading the text of the diet helps. The diet was formulated by a cardiologist of note and he seems to provide sound professional reasoning in developing this diet. From the beginning I wanted to implement a life style change, and for these few days at least it seems to be working.
I'd recommend the South Beach Diet, rating it "worth a try".
....also, I'm a library freak, I could spend hours and hours there. For me the innerweb is the same thing, I could (and do) sit behind the key board for hours at a time. So, my New Years resolution, to go along with this diet is no more than 20 minutes in any one hour behind the key board. Anyone want to track their browsing time and compare it with weight loss?

Eat a little something with in 30 minutes of waking up. I'm not talking about a giant breakfast, just something like a yogurt, fruit, or some oats. This helps wake up your metabolism. Tells your body, sleep is over and you'll be fueling up the next x amt of hours. On the tail end of the day stop eating by 8pm. This tells your body to HTFU, Nothing else is going to come into that pie hole.
Keep at this. Your body will get into the rhythm of things. Good luck!

I ate at Pinos every day so far.
But I think #16 is not in the diet.
The scale in my office is nice and new. A fancy Taylor thing with a new battery that, after you toe tap it, makes you wait while the little ooo goes across the bottom of the screen.
I did hit the gym tonight and total up 1000 of those make you feel good bullshit calories on a couple bikes and a peddaly slidie back and forth thingie.
