So honestly, how big a slog is this to head SW afterwards? Otherwise, it sounds like a great time!
Many of us are going to cruise the south shore of Newfoundland (which is spectacular) and then head for the Bras D'Or lakes of Cape Breton, which is also spectacular, after the race. If you have time to do it, it's highly recommended!
I had a look at your blog and your McCurdy Rhodes 46 would be a sweet ride for the race!
PM me if I can be of assistance.

I see there is a non-spin division; is this viable given prevailing winds?

Any other boats originating near Newport for the ride to Halifax?
I see there is a non-spin division; is this viable given prevailing winds?
Mantra, a Little Harbour 51, raced non-spin in 2008 and took it all, and there's lots of cruisers doing the 2012 race. The last two races have been fast beam reaches most of the way.

Heck Mung, I don't think you'll even be the only McCurdy & Rhodes in that division.

Yes, us. The boat is at Parker's on Cape Cod for the winter, we' ll bring her near Newport to prep and provision for the trip to Halifax.Any other boats originating near Newport for the ride to Halifax?
Given our small, family crew and varnish hog boat, we're going white sails for the race. I wish the cruisers were allowed an asym, but we'll bring that for the cruising part.

CL - Parker's is a terrific yard! Nice family. Are you sailing back to Maine or further south afterward? I might do this race simply because we haven't finalized downwind inventory yet.

I really don't know yet. My plan (so far) is to cruise the south coast of Newfoundland after the race, then come back through the Bras D'or lakes. After that, I hope to be open, although a couple of business committments may have me traveling back and forth.

So far I'm very happy with Parker's, so the plan would be to end up back there by season's end.

Perhaps now that the boat's a winner the owner will think he can charge people more in order to race on the boat.
Wes, I don't know what to say, other than I don't see myself inclined to help you ever again. Take your sour grapes and shove them up your ass.

How is that an insult or even a slight? Higher demand results in suppliers being able to set a higher price. I'm praising his abilities as a sailor who needs to both be competitive and cover his bills. Nothing wrong with that. Congratulations on your win man and thanks for the helping me try to get mine.

Since at least two of us, older (Nautigirl, I assume you're older than 21, albeit just barely) and wiser than you, read the same thing into what you said, I suggest you look deeply at the tone and intention of your message. Get back to us when you understand and can explain to the group what you meant to say. In the meantime, I will take what you said at face value, and call you a poor sport.

Well, you may wish to put more effort into learning how to express yourself using only the written word because I can promise you that the only person who interpreted that post as praise was you.
Or maybe you shouldn't be so quick to judge. Interesting that people around here tend to jump to the negative.

So I take it that until he won his class in Bermuda, you felt that he wasn't charging enough? That a ride on Dogsled was vastly undervalued to this point, but now he'll wake up and demand a fair price for a spot on his rail?

Well, aren't you sweet, but I'm no where near 21!
The wonderful thing about growing up is you learn to spend more time worried about what you're doing and what you think, and less time worrying about what other folks are doing and thinking.

6:00ish. (It's a steak & lobster TGIF. If you want to eat, maybe call Gumby, as we had to order in advance. Of course, you can always drop by and just drink)
I think it's a nice gesture on the part of the club to do a little something for the 3 DYC boats participating, with the added bonus of making the whole membership aware of the event. I overheard that they're going to present us with little parting gifts. I really do love our club.
So much to do before next weekend!

I would argue I'm not a member of either, though up until Gumby, I raced mostly out of RNSYS.
The people at DYC heartily argue otherwise, and have declared me to be a DYCer (via shacking up).

'k. We'll touch base on this thread once we arrive. Lots of crews will want to have crew dinners and/or dinner with their host families. Worst case scenario is Team Vagrant will host a pre-awards night happy hour, unless Sea Smoke wishes to have the honours. I do think SA drinkies are in order though.

I have a question - I've heard about and been looking forward to being adopted for a week by a 'host' family. But when I go to the race website, I see no mention of that, only a link to (a nice selection of reasonably priced) hotels and pensions. Anyone have the low down on what actually happens?
When you arrive, your host family will be waiting on the dock. They'll give you a welcome bag (which includes champagne and usually wine). They will check in on the boat every day, usually invite you over for supper, let you do your laundry at their house, drive crew to the airport, etc. Some are more involved than others. 2 years ago, we finished around 1400, and our guy went and bought us french break, duck pate, sandwiches, better wine and pastries for the crew. They were just wonderful. They are also invited to the awards dinner. We'll be bringing some Canadian treats for our host family, including a crew jacket and crew shirts. They really do make you feel welcome.

Thanks. I was going to bring some quintessentially American stuff, tbd, in anticipation of their hospitality. My boat is turning around as soon as the skipper and his partner get a night's sleep, so I'll need to avail myself of the accommodations upon arrival.

Team Vagrant checking in. Well, what a race. Doing laundry in Baddeck and one of our crew's wife keeps asking me why I didn't bring shorts (I'm wearing a short sundress not conducive to getting on and off the boat). She doesn't seem to get that I did in fact bring 4 pairs of shorts, but ended up wearing them all during the race and in St. Pierre. That just never happens.
Great to meet new American friends (and to share my cuban stogies with you!)
Oh, and by the way
WE WON!Those Rail Meat "go fast" thoughts really worked!
Enjoyed meeting you and G and the crew! Thanks again for the Cuban. And again, a very hearty Congratulations! to team Vagrant!
See you next year in Marblehead, I hope!

You earned that one! We watched you for hours trying to unfuck those halyards. Nice work!
Who was the one who fucked em up?
We all did, LH. Anyone of us on the boat could have prevented the problem if we'd noticed it. But if you really want finger pointing, I guess it was your fault for not being there to teach us how it's done.

Had drinks with a gentleman last night who doesn't post here, but reads a lot. I wonder if the boy will ever understand all the rides he'll never get that result from the bullshit he posts? Probably not.

There are very few rides I would want if they originated from here.

That woosh is the sound of my point flying over your head.
No, I got your point. I just don't care about your opinion or your sanctimonious tone. Mostly because you're wrong.

Jeez miles, what up? U fall in love w some French Eskimo chick?
I tried my best. The plan is to grab a girl in Halifax and drag her to my cave on Saint Pierre. We'll eat croissants for every meal and drink wine instead of water.
