Many of us are going to cruise the south shore of Newfoundland (which is spectacular) and then head for the Bras D'Or lakes of Cape Breton, which is also spectacular, after the race. If you have time to do it, it's highly recommended!

I had a look at your blog and your McCurdy Rhodes 46 would be a sweet ride for the race!

Mantra, a Little Harbour 51, raced non-spin in 2008 and took it all, and there's lots of cruisers doing the 2012 race. The last two races have been fast beam reaches most of the way.

CL - Parker's is a terrific yard! Nice family. Are you sailing back to Maine or further south afterward? I might do this race simply because we haven't finalized downwind inventory yet.

I really don't know yet. My plan (so far) is to cruise the south coast of Newfoundland after the race, then come back through the Bras D'or lakes. After that, I hope to be open, although a couple of business committments may have me traveling back and forth.

So far I'm very happy with Parker's, so the plan would be to end up back there by season's end.

There's a truckload of Classe 40's here in Halifax right now. I made some inquiries to their Class about doing the St Pierre race but they are all eventually headed to Quebec City for the St Malo race.

How is that an insult or even a slight? Higher demand results in suppliers being able to set a higher price. I'm praising his abilities as a sailor who needs to both be competitive and cover his bills. Nothing wrong with that. Congratulations on your win man and thanks for the helping me try to get mine.

I would argue I'm not a member of either, though up until Gumby, I raced mostly out of RNSYS.

The people at DYC heartily argue otherwise, and have declared me to be a DYCer (via shacking up).

Well, a week until race day and Team Vagrant is down a crew following a bit of a medical emergency after last night's practice sail.

so disappointed for our missing crewmate--he was really pumped about this race and we'll miss having him with us. On the bright side, he's doing ok and it could have been much, much worse.

So now to find another crew to fill us out.

I have a question - I've heard about and been looking forward to being adopted for a week by a 'host' family. But when I go to the race website, I see no mention of that, only a link to (a nice selection of reasonably priced) hotels and pensions. Anyone have the low down on what actually happens?

When you arrive, your host family will be waiting on the dock. They'll give you a welcome bag (which includes champagne and usually wine). They will check in on the boat every day, usually invite you over for supper, let you do your laundry at their house, drive crew to the airport, etc. Some are more involved than others. 2 years ago, we finished around 1400, and our guy went and bought us french break, duck pate, sandwiches, better wine and pastries for the crew. They were just wonderful. They are also invited to the awards dinner. We'll be bringing some Canadian treats for our host family, including a crew jacket and crew shirts. They really do make you feel welcome.

Saint Pierre is without a doubt the most enjoyable destination I have ever sailed to. The people are so kind and so welcoming it's hard to describe. I really cannot say enough positive things about the island and residents - you just have to do the race to know what I mean.

I plan to come back here for a month and telecommute - I may do it every year till I retire.

Team Vagrant checking in. Well, what a race. Doing laundry in Baddeck and one of our crew's wife keeps asking me why I didn't bring shorts (I'm wearing a short sundress not conducive to getting on and off the boat). Team Vagrant checking in. Well, what a race. Doing laundry in Baddeck and one of our crew's wife keeps asking me why I didn't bring shorts (I'm wearing a short sundress not conducive to getting on and off the boat). She doesn't seem to get that I did in fact bring 4 pairs of shorts, but ended up wearing them all during the race and in St. Pierre. That just never happens.
