I'll be chatting with Big Ben Ainslie on Friday morning, and I'd love to see what the Anarchists have to ask him about the Olympics, Ben Ainslie Racing AC45 team, and so on. Feel free to post questions about his little 'fight club' boarding in Perth, but he won't be answering those questions until the RYA inquiry is over (if ever!)

We're very grateful to Ben and to his publicist Jo for setting this up - now help us come up with great questions!

On the AC45 BAR is getting: Is it brand new, when does he expect delivery, where will they take delivery, and what will the hull number be?

Does he have any interest in small cats, either the A class or F16? I still think there is a worthwhile challenge in sailing the F16 solo.

What experience does he have with faster than the wind sailing? It seems that the 49er and cat sailors are adapting better than the Finn sailors in GCR

Are there any other sailors he has competed against in the Olympics etc he would like to see in the AC (WS or AC proper)

What changes in match racing tactics does Ben feel has come out of sailing winged cats in an enclosed course, and how has the course configuration changed his tactical thinking from traditional courses? How does this bear on racing in SF? Also, what's his take on the lee-bow on Cats?

If Team Origin had backed out because they didn't agree with the format and didn't feel it would give them a fair shot. Doesn't signing on with the defender and possibly helping them win again go against everything his team stands for? Or was it just Keith Mills that didn't like the format and Ben feels like this is all good for the cup?

If BAR wins the 35th Americas Cup, which locations in the UK, purely from a sailing perspective, would Ben put on his personal short list to host the defense of the 36th America's Cup?

Which Finn sailors who will not be sailing in the Olympics would have presented the greatest challenge to you if they had been sailing? Is the Olympics poorer for their absence?

As a member of the British Commonwealth who worked with the New Zealand team for an extended period of time, do you have any qualms about leaping into bed with and accepting money from Americans?

Is BAR just a business deal? Or, deep in your soul are there any qualms about hitching your waggon to the thundering monolith financed by Larry Ellison?

The foxhunting abolition league? Disabled sailors association? Red Cross? Which organisations? And why?

in the days leading up to how do you prepare for a one-design regatta, in a strategic/tactical sense?

how about in between races? what do you do, and what do you think about in between, say, laser or finn races?

talk us through what you are doing and thinking between races.

With all of the racing you compete in, do you ever enjoy just being on a boat anymore? Some racing sailors don't disengage much and don't see any enjoyment in sailing for the sake of sailing, are you one of them?

Does the attitude and respect of a fellow sailor change the way you compete with them on the course? for example if you know someone is a massive douche will you be more rutheless?

You may want to check your facts. I thought Ben's impression of Jack Sparrow was awesome, and wrote that his actions were good for sailing right on the front page, and that he absolutely should be on the line in Weymouth.

Ben,

Games such as soccer have stars with natural talent like Diego Maradonna and Pele. I’ve always maintained that there is no such thing as natural talent in dinghy sailing; skills have to be learnt, developed, and mastered over many, many years. Then sailors such as yourself and Slingsby come along and prove me completely wrong. Can you describe how much of your Laser and Finn Sailing is accomplished by feel, rather than just going through the standard motions for single handed dinghy sailing?

Looking back, how did you view the TP52 Audi MedCup circuit? A worthwhile venture or just a training exercise due to planning a V5 Cup campaign?

Any comments on the Juan K TP52 boat? All kinds of rumors; good, bad or ugly? (she did score a bullet in KWRW on Tuesday)

Funny but your front page stuff seems to have slid off into the round file but I do remember you saying..

Just in case BA doesn't know the story, Cobb is the dude that got banned for 2yrs for jumping onto a kids laser and punching the shit out of him...

I did find a post which said..
Yes the media loves this and sensationalizes it. SA's front page shows that SA is as predictable as mainstream media seeking to create a newsworthy "thug" idol. Oh how the media loves to find "bad boyz".

the ben shouldn't earn any money from sailing dude,
the ben is invoved with the tv company thru his management company and they are colluding with the boat driver to help ben win but he fucked up dude,
the ben haters who want him kicked out of the Olympics because he is too good of a sailor and needs a lifetime ban from the sport so that their guy might have a chance to win gold...
and the dudes who hate anything good that is not from the US...

and all the rest who don't understand that sometimes we all make mistakes..even the best sailor...

Oh ..and if you insist on you spending more time on the questions than Ben does answering them, can you point the camera so we are not looking at a beaming egg or up your nose...or better yet just put Ben up on the screen..

"Ben you are a professionnal sailor, you sail for, fine. How will you feel being a challenger paid by the defender ? Will you feel confortable being called a surrogate team or poodle3 ? Do you car or you don't give a..."

If you don't address that question it will be an nice talk show without adressing the real issues. You have to chose between Oprah and Howard Stern.

  • You said you would be looking for international sponsors. British sailors have had difficulty gaining sponsorship in recent years for events such as the AC and VOR. Do you think British companies are less open to sailing sponsorship than those elsewhere and if so, why?
  • British sailors who have been through Jim Saltonshall's tutelage can be found in many of the current ACWS teams. Are they likely to come together in your team and to what extent do you regard it as identifiably British?
  • You remarked that budget depended in part on where the team was based. Have you decided where BAR will be located?
  • Do you agree with Grant Dalton that nationality rules for sailors would help re-establish public interest in the AC?

I guess I can't really ask you if you are a chronic troll who doesn't actually believe most of what he writes, as if you are you wouldn't ruin the game by admitting it, and if you aren't then you wouldn't like the question.

The "10,000 hour" rule postulates that takes 10,000 hours of purposeful practice in order to become an expert. When at school, and going sailing by yourself every day, what did you do to make it "purposeful practice", rather than just sailing around? What tasks and goals did you set yourself?

Would he regard an AC win as the pinnacle of his sailing career, or would it be just another trophy after all those olympic medals? Obviously there is more money involved, but is the racing actually more competitive? Would spithill hack it in the laser/finn fleet?

Oh, and if the career advice thing comes up - any need for a highly qualified RYA instructor (SDI, WI, PBI) with BAR racing? Made the mistake of moving into teaching rather than racing a few years ago, and need a way back into the big time...

As of now, your great results have been accomplished on one-man/one-hull boats. Before jumping on an AC45, have you had the time to try an A-Cat?

I am about three-quarters of the way through the Isaacson biography of Steve Jobs.

When Apple employees showed him stuff he would typically label it "shit" and toss it back across the table.

Then he would later adopt the very thing he had dismissed as "shit."

Which is probably what Brother Clean is about to do with our (mostly good) Ainslie questions!

Despite what Clean said, I think the questions are pretty good. Particularly SR's one about Gallipoli!

Jobs was a genius but a brat. Very, very irresponsible in many ways and an unrepentant narcissist fully preoccupied with being Steve Jobs. Lacked empathy for others.

He was mates with Ellison. After the Ellison's had visited the Jobs house, Steve's daughter Lisa would refer to Larry as "the rich guy."

Also, LE used to take the Jobs clan out on one of his many "luxurious yachts."

The Keith Richards book was the Xmas gift of 2010 and the Jobs bio was it for 2011.

It is highly critical of Jobs. Even so, having recently been to Standford, I am very much enjoying learning more about the culture of Palo Alto.

Like Ellison, Steve Jobs was adopted. So the usual question arises. Did his intense obsession with perfection arise from unresolved social issues?

And Clean, find the courage to ask Ainsle for the title of the most recent non-fiction book he has read. That is a good question.

And there are many others.

Hint, hint. Let Ainslie answer without interuption.

After Weymouth, Ben is going to be spending a lot of time training himself to become the best multihull sailor in the world, for ACWS and for 36th AC, so I think it is a good question to ask if he will switch disciplines for Brazil Olympics.

If there is a multihull in the 2016 Olympics, would Ben consider a multihull
campaign for Brazil
2016?



You cant ask directly where he would host the AC if he won, but you can ask him for a short list of favorite locations from a sailing perspective.....in four years time, you will be able to claim that you read it here first. So its a good question to ask, even if he will probably equivocate.


If BAR wins the 35th Americas Cup, which locations in the UK, purely from a
sailing perspective, would Ben put on his personal short list to host the
defense of the 36th America's Cup?

That's actually a great question. I'd venture to guess that before the "incident", not many in the general sailing populace knew who Ben Ainslie was. Now, his name is really well-known. I've always felt that the timing was a little too well- orchestrated. Good on 'em for pulling it off.

How do you feel that a couple of weeks ago the majority here including the dude you are talking to, thought you were a thug and deserved banning from the sport of sailing and yet today those same people are here kissing your ass and welcoming you into the sa community...

You may want to check your facts. I thought Ben's impression of Jack Sparrow was awesome, and wrote that his actions were good for sailing right on the front page, and that he absolutely should be on the line in Weymouth.

I think Mambo may be referring to the idea that the qualifying regattaes leading up to the Olympics are often MORE competitive than the Olympics themselves. Consider for example the 1999 49er Worlds in Melbourne that had both the McKee bros as well as Morgan Larson and Kevin Hall in the Gold Fleet vs. the Olympics when only one pair could represent the USA.

So a nation that has a deep team essentially bumps out some of the top sailors, while a nation good enough to qualify as a nation, but who's #1 team isn't as good as the #2 or #3 of the deeper team is in.

QED, there are going to be Finn Sailors in the Olympics who are not as good as some of the Finn Sailors who's nation is represented but who got beaten in their own selection trials.


At least that's how this 'merkun reads the question.

The Finn class is slightly changing all the time (carbon mast, digital compass...etc). How would you change the Finn? Do you think it's time to replace it by a higher performance boat like the D-One or RS at the Olympics?

My Seahorse mag. always seems to arrive just a bit later than those US bound.

But it is here now and they are pretty clear Ainslie should not suffer because of the Perth incident.

After reading their analysis - and critique of the race management - I am inclined to agree.

Quite apart fom anything else, Ainslie is not boring.

And, moreover, the media boat should not have been blocking his path to the finish.

As part of their analysis, Seahorse has a photo of a helicopter sending huge turbulence onto the race course.

Certainly makes us wonder about the organization.

Anyway, we look forward to the Clean interview.

Of course seapony is going to say Ainslie should be let off. They and he are Brits, and they are all part of the pro sailing money machine, one hand will wash the other.

ISAF allowed the media boat to be where it was, the chopper too. It's all just about making more money through TV. Ainslie is the star of the show.

Everyone on the planet knows the RYA won't do anything to Ainslie, mostly because it will be their way to tell ISAF to get stuffed.

So that leaves it to ISAF to do something, and of course they won't, because Ainslie is their meal ticket to more TV coverage.

While Seapony is a good publication for highly technical things and the very top end of the sport, for the majority of sailors it is an irrelevant publication. SA gets more eyeballs than does Seapony.

You seem to have missed a few important details. Ben won silver in 1996 and gold in 2000. He won his first worlds at the age of 21, Scheidt was 23 when he won his first. Ben won his first Olympic medal aged 19, Scheidt was 23. In fact, at the age of 19, Scheidt didn't even make the Olympics.

At the height of Scheidt's career, Ben came along and beat him. From early 1998, Ben beat Scheidt more than Scheidt beat Ben, culminating in the gold at the Olympics. The other big difference between Scheidt and Ainslie is that Ainslie has won gold in 2 different classes, has 3 golds in total and a 4th medal, while Scheidt has only won gold in the Laser, has 2 golds in total and 3 medals overall. Finally, Scheidt deliberately avoided Ben by choosing the Star rather than the Finn.

Don't get me wrong. Robert Sceidt is one of the best sailors of his generation. The difference is that Ben is the best of his generation, maybe of any generation.

"Ben, seeing as hands are very important tools to your sailing, how do you protect your knuckles while punching someone. Can you explain your technique? I just want to know so I can teach my nieces and nephews how the 'greatest sailor' in the world does it."
