Anyone have a copy of the SI's?  Not finding them on the website.

Hey Ian you only get SI's after your boat is inspected.

"Courtesy Boat Inspections:June7–All competitors will be subject to pre-race safety inspections which will be conducted by the Nanaimo Coast Guard Auxiliary. Please have all safety gear stowed onboard prior to inspection. Inspections must be completed prior to the skipper receiving the Sailing Instructions."

See you later today or tomorrow for the Delivery on Friday . Chad

Chad, that doesn't make any sense.  We get a copy of the SI's that may include safety or procedural requirements that we are unaware of only after we are inspected?  SI's should be available now so we can be reviewing them and preparing.

If only you and I wrote the rules...

That's what it states just passing the info. It's not even in the right place the NoR says pickup tomorrow after 1300 and then that little bit of info is found in the schedule document...

Hmmm.....you think that you paid your fee, got accepted and why is there any mystery? And I agree: You need to know if there is anything in the rules/safety issue you have to deal with that; a long time before the start or the skipper's meeting.

That said: I'm not in but I'll be carefully watching the race with team Dark Star. Go you guys!!!

The race today from a slow to mid fleet perspective - was a slow and fickle run! Lots of slop to contend with and 5-8knots of breeze.

Start had a heavily favoured end but a large wind shadow made it risky too.

Wind shut off @ 4:00pm so if you finished before that you did well.

Off to bed to battle another day!

Go NIGHT RUNNER!

Hey Bob,

I'll root for NIGHT RUNNER but I'm rooting for ICON too.  I just got a text from a friend and crew-mate (and a co-founder of Race the Cape) that he got a ride on ICON for this leg.

No, I'm not jealous, no...

Looking like it's another slow day. Have the big boats have pulled the pin already? Icon is way out front in what must be very light airs going pretty much strait when it's coming from the NWish.

http://tracker.vanisle360.com/

That's right now at 1310 but looking at the tracker I don't trust much.

I take it back. Icon finished around 1500. Pretty tough sledding I can imagine. At least it's a beautiful day.

When I looked at 1744, all of the big boats except New Haven have finished, one multi(Moxie) finished, Radical Departure finished and a lot of boats appear to be too far to finish within the time limit. A few may still make it, but it is close!

Not working here either. I think I'll drop a comment on the Facebook page. They have been good about answering. The first year I've watched this on the tracker. Were there issues about receiving tracker signals up in this area in the past?

I raced in the 2011 Van Isle. Seemed like the tracker worked OK. The biggest problem seemed to be remembering to start the Spot tracker each day and resetting it if the leg was longer than 24 hours. Todays issue seems to be more server related. Maybe they did not pay their bill today.

OK
Here's the poop. Apparently there is a broken link but for now type in leg4.vanisle360.com
That worked for me. Dark Star seems to have lost their tracker. Looks pretty light, two or so knots boat speed two knots current. Nice straight tracks!

Yes, that's made a difference as the first 3 legs were a little funky at best with the tracker. The site seem to crater a couple of times yesterday morning too; nobody home.

Talking to DS's navigator a couple of days before of the event I said there is a huge high wobbling off the coast with no dynamic to make it anything but a light air situation. Probably until later in the week. I think it's coming to pass. We've got a little busyness from the south in Vancouver but it's an anomaly like the race we did on Saturday. If anything shows up it will be very localized where they are.

And yes, I guess Dark Star has lost they tracker - bummer.

Compared to the 2011 race this leg was really light. In 2011 a multi lost it's rig and we saw about 30 in the small craft warning strait that day. Tonight they will stay at the fish farm, where someone broke their arm last time around too. A fish farm is not an appropriate place to go for a jog.

Some of the big boats have already arrived at the fish farm but as of now (1527) it looks like there are boats in mid pack apparently going the wrong direction. Did the wind crater or is it the tracker?

I think BB is on Cinco; but don't quote me. WHL? Not sure exactly. Maybe together? Dunno.

My suspicions were correct. Looks like the wind/current slammed shut in late afternoon. Sad, but make sense. So only about 20% of the fleet actually finished? I thought there was a rule if that happened (50% or less) the leg canned? maybe there's been a rule change; I don't know.

Maxx

I think previously there was some percentage of finishers required to validate the race leg. But I can't seem to find it in the NOR or SI. This could be a long haul for them again today.

Could be SV. I had a 5 PM cocktail with my mate that has done all of them except this one and the rule was that the leg is cratered at a 50% attrition rate. Perhaps it's been changed. I haven't looked at the SI's closely but I'm busy sorting my sock drawer this morning.

Looks like they are moseying along for now. Strange weather here (Vancouver) with a weak localized upper low from the SW that won't go away. Might be spinning onto the course today. Not likely to last though.

If I was still out there drifting around, I would get the crew on sleeping shifts. Tomorrows dock time is about 6:00 am to get to the start. And one long night after another is pretty tiring. The legs are sprints, if you have no rest it will be tough

Huh. Really? Where? White Cloud hit a reef - hard- in '07 at the start line. It was over for them. Winter Harbour is in the middle of nowhere and hang a left!

Looking at the tracker everyone is in. No results though.

Those guys will be exhausted already and a 0800 call/start in the morning. Isn't Winter Harbour proper is 7-10 miles to the start? No rest for the wicked I suppose!

Hopefully a little wind to work with:

And so much for a lay day.

Hi all. Navigator of westerly here I just arrived in ukey and I can start by explaining the grounding. I navigated the boat into a charted rock at the north tip of the island. I was too deep into an area that I should have not been and prior to the grounding i did not see the marking on the map mostly because of electronic chart crowding at the zoom level I was at. I take full responsibility as the grounding was preventable with proper attention given.

The damage is substantial but is not race ending as you may have seen by our finish in the last leg. We were able to make repairs with a lot of gracious help from the entire fleet and will be able to continue in the race.

Slim
Don't beat yourself up. Shit happens. We all know, If you haven't hit something, you will.
Looks like you all may get a well deserved break with the weather to Victoria.

Was it at least someone else navigating on the last grounding; the one before Swiftsure?

Slim:

It's not like you are the first guy in the PNW to hit a rock. You now belong to a very distinguished group and you will never forget where that rock is.

Corinthian props to the Navigator on Cinco de Mayo. I heard him on the radio last night/this morning correcting the RC on his actual finish time. Well done Sir!

I think there are a couple of Anarchists on Cinco, might have been WHL, I've sailed with him, a real gentleman.
