Combined Clubs stop fucking bragging. Most of the boats in the frozen north are either on the hard or frozen in their slips. I've raced out of Mooloolaba and it's not perfect. It's only good if you can get past the sand bar blocking the entrance to the harbour.

Last time I was in Mooloolaba was to collect a boat for delivery to Hobart. The yacht club was huge, the marina was huge, and full - full of mostly l;arge yachts. The yacht club was just about the the closest building to the ocean beach. The yacht club was closed... bankrupt, apparently... had been for years and, as far as know, was for years afterwards... does not compute.

Not bragging,dont have to,and you dont have to brag about how cold you winter is.Our winter involves offshore winds, temps in the 20's [68F for you US based]and sailing all year round. Come and have a sail with Us or contact Cheap jibes and have a sail in his area, where he probably sails all year too [we dont eat biscuits]

Hi Weylan yes all in the past, The yacht Club is refurbished and open for buisness, great food,cold beer and as I have said great sailing.The entrance getting dredged as we type, so I dont think it will be long before it is even better than it already is.

now there was a race! did the 1st in 1973, tied up to a pile in the river then step ashore in front of the club get blind then be very careful getting back on board and not falling down one of two forward hatches on Apollo.

light headwinds battling against the current getting as close as you dare to the coast at nite then maybe a roundup or 2 when the southerly came in. passing smokes over to lawso in the middle of the night while both boats are peeling chutes at the same time. One very long year big Sid Brown had read all the stick books by Newcastle. nobody is happy if big Sid aint ! what a great racing sailer he was.

Another year Grimesy when thru the bar on the way to the showers, it took him 3 days to get there!

Plenty of stories because of the Mooloolaba race. About time to reinstate this race, what do others think? as CC said Mooloolaba is open for buisness

I hope this club actually happens because the Mooloolaba scene has been severely failing for some time.

Great story from the good old Scor days. At this particular time the series was run over 3 weekends. The late, great Tommy Melville was knocking off some girl he had met up there. Now Tom was one of the best blokes you could ever meet and was larger than life both in both body shape and personality. Tom made it his pratice to get all beered up at the MYC on friday nights and then raid her ground floor apartment through the bedroom window after the bar shut. On the 3rd friday night Tom thought he would liven things up by nudeing up first then doing a tarzan call out side before diving through the window onto her bed.
Sadly for Tom she had moved during the week and a new girl had moved in.

Next morning Tommy told us young fellas the story before we went into the club for Breakfast. He had made the front page of the Sunshine Coast daily as police searched the coast for a large red haired potential rapest.
Ah the good all days - but you can't tell the young people today, nooo, nooo.

Yes Big Tom loved Mooloolaba, After an open heart surgery the boys visited him in hospital. One of them asked Tom 'what's the story on the red cask wine on the bedside table', Tom replied as he refilled a specimen jar with Red Ned "The Doctor's orders are no beer! HAHAHAHA! Cheers!"

Still have the XXXX flag I purloined from the flagpole on the roof of the MYC after Syd-Moo with Kanga B in '83. After sitting on the lawns eating prawns and washing em down with cold frothies all afternoon the plot was hatched. It was an easy climb up the sloping roof and a reasonably easy shin up the flagpole, Stanley knife firmly clenched in my mouth, but no one had told me it was a vertical drop to the car park on the other side. Amazing what alcohol does for fear!!

Haven't spoken to the Doc directly, but as an outside observer, I'd say that his experiences have been "mixed". It was an awesome sight watching them cross our bow doing... I dunno... maybe 25 knots, during the crown series (we were pretty pleased with our 8 - 8.5 at the time, heh).

I believe that they had a pretty tough time in one of the big races up the coast of the other Island (Sydney Gold Coast, maybe) and broke some sails and a steering pedestal (can't say I'd like to be paying for the sail wardrobe on a 52).

Word is that Tony is struggling a bit for crew, but that is strictly bar gossip...


Are Bill and "Custard" Coward still part of the sailing scene up there?
