In Pune India right now. Today March 9, is Holi festival, which is celebrated colors by throwing & rubbing dyes on everyone. There's a Holi festival party next to the hotel I am at, and it looks like fun, though I don't have any clothes that I can give to the cause.

In a Holi tradition unique to Nandgaon and Barsana villages, men sing provocative songs to gain the attention of women, who then "beat" them with bamboo sticks called "lathis". Holi, also known as the Festival of Colours, heralds the beginning of spring and is celebrated all over India.

Definitely multi-cultural.... I do 3x shots of tequila, grab the guitar and my wife hits me over the head with a frying pan

No stick whacking going on here that I can see, though I am only in one small area of Pune. Lots of younger kids having fun dancing to punjabi music, throwing colorful dyes or sneaking up on friends and rubbing dyes on their face. They even had a neat setup with sprinklers to both clean them off and cool them down.

Did you get down to street level?

I went to Erau (water festival) in Tenggarong a few years back. Similar sort of scene, madness if you're amongst it all. Being "different" singles you out for "special" attention.

Yes, but I was standing outside the festival area which was fenced off. Looked like it was much less traditional than what your pics show.

Different? I did see a bloke on the flight from Bangalore to Pune that initially looked like a yogi (long grey hair and beard), but was wearing womens clothes, looked like he had breasts, and was wearing high heels. Is the the different/special we're talking about?

No mate. I was the only white guy there and there was no festival area, it was the whole town. Being different (not Indonesian) I was singled out for a double dose.
