Surely after Sanya's misfortune and near sinking, God knows how many other mishaps/sinkings due to rudder failure, it is time to rethink a more modern method of steering a boat, after all, the basic rudder has been around over a thousand years with little change in design since the Chinese invented it. At least the sweep oars the Portugese and Vikings used were easily repairable and replaceable without damaging the integrity of the boat. How about above water tubes the length of the hull and with flaps to control the flow of water each side or high tech sweep oars ? FFS it's the 21st century !

Good point but then there's no handicapping in F1 but what if a new steering device gained you a 20% improved IRC no. ?

I think a certain model of Boeing, and another by Airbus, were known to have been crashed by their rudders too.

Simple , Don't have a rudder. Don't turn, just go straight to your destination. going straight there doesn't waste a much wind

This thread is hilarious. What the heck is wrong with rudders?

also, @casc27: i think you actually can have a canard rudder. i am pretty sure that a couple of those AC boats from the 90s had them -- in other words, a second rudder up front. Why you would want that is beyond me, but I'm almost positive they did.

Why not buy a Jeanneau/Beneteau & steer with the bow thrusters? Chicks dig bow thrusters.
