You'd walk away with ~$80 million?
Yeah, I could make that work.
I'd spend a couple of years traveling the country with a big f-ing toyhauler. Stuff a boat, motorcycle, and a Rhino in there and spend a couple years messing around North America. I'd send relatives post cards of places I'd been, never where I was.
After that I'd probably build a cool house. Just for a project, then sell it off and go search for something else to keep me entertained.
I don't understand the people who go broke after winning the lottery. I'm too cheap to even comprehend that.

In the extremely rare chance that I win, first thing I'm doing is meeting with a trusts/estates lawyer and a financial planner to figure out how to protect as much of the money from myself and my new best friends that will come crawling out of the woodwork.
Once that's all taken care of, I'll get myself a few toys and a new pad. Then it's back to work.

We had a crew member win 1/2 of $30,000,000 USD in the Lotto. Things changed, not good, not bad, but this crew member doesn't sail anymore, and didn't buy a boat.

Really? Compare the expected return on a $1 lottery ticket (I think it's somewhere around $0.40) with the expected return on a $8 ticket to see a movie, which is $0.00.
#42

1 2 3 4 5 6
same odds as anything else
Same odds, yes, but same return, no, because the pot is split among all those with the winning numbers, and the distribution of numbers played is not random. For example, if a lot of people are in the habit of playing their birthday, then numbers less that 13 will be slightly over represented.

There might be other stuff she wants to look at as well, I'll call Saturday morning and check. We haven't met yet but that seems like a great way to spend a windfall. Stay tuned!!No winner. I think you're better off spending that money doubling all of your numbers, on more tickets. I'd rather have more chances at half the prize(or eve less) than less chances at a higher one. I guess it depends on what you figure is "enough" money.

In my hometown, there's this guy (kind of looks like a washed up Morgan Freeman) who would always be behind the counter at the local Mobil I go to around 8:30-9pm every night I got off work. Always chatting up Johnny, the guy at the counter, buying tickets like no ones business. The guy always seemed like he knew what he was doing and paid out of pocket with a wad of cash thicker than my fist.

I never understood buying more than one. To me, the whole entertainment value in a lottery ticket is in holding a piece of paper that might potentially be worth a metric shitload of money. It's not like holding two of them, making your odds a zillion to two against you instead of a zillion to one, is twice as entertaining or anything....
pretty much that
although some analysis say when it gets big that more entries make sense - not sure I get that

Makes perfect statistical sense. 1/1,000,000 + 1/1,000,001 is still better than 1/1,000,000.

This.
While multiple picks increase the odds of a winner you are still looking at very slim odds at 1:175,711,536 for a single ticket. In any case, it's a bad bet so if you play, do it for the entertainment or the dream, not as your retirement strategy.

For the sake of a dollar or 2 (compared to the 5 or 6 dollars that a Lottomax costs me back home) it's not a big deal.
For me personally, the "entertainment value" comes from checking them. Every Saturday morning, i run to the store and get the paper and winning numbers, and check my ticket, and my sweeties, with my coffee. That's what's "fun" for me. 2 tickets, twice the fun.

and then there's my shitty rhyme I made up a few days back after finding a spent ticket on the ground at my dog-walkin' park:
Well, I hate the fucking lottery
ain't nothing that it ever bought for me
keeps poor people in poverty
that's one reason why I hate the lottery
I'm at the liquor store in a bit of a hurry
yer buying ten tickets with your welfare money
your directions are unclear, so is your purpose
unlike my time, that ticket is worthless
feel free to add.

Though I can honestly say I'm far ahead of the curve given in college the one time I dropped $1 on a ticket I won $500!!! I bought another $1 ticket with the same number and won another $20 then called it quits. Doubt I've spent more than $40 on tickets since.
Wife and I have both said if we ever won 8-10mill after taxes we would retire manage some of our own funds ie money - find some cool community activities to get involved in and spend more time with our kids and family. No big houses - or fancy cars though both of us agreed a nice fast cruiser built for double handed efforts would be on the shopping list LOL.

It's too big. In a world where punks commit home invasions to steal a $1,000 tax refund, can you imagine the magnitude of the security risks that would come as a result of winning? Is giving up your life as you know it worth half a billion?

I bet it grows again to over 700 by the drawing tonight. If it doesn't go off tonight, it'll be over $1B on Tuesday.
I picked up a ticket at a local bottle shop. No one in line but they had an extra counter person just for lottery sales and she said it has been steady most of the day with only a few $100+ sales. Most people doing 5 or 10.

Might be cool to purchase some Bay front property and build a small marina with the intent of hosting some really epic regattas and giving some sailing buddies a great place to keep their boats. That idea sounds pretty good to me.
