Stopped by the Intrepid Museum to watch the Enterprise flyby on April 27th, 2012 and caught this little lovely sneaking up the Hudson. The ID is just a guess.

Maybe they are taking the boat through the Erie canal for the freshwater season?

That is correct she is in the Erie canal right now heading towards the lakes

And what's the structure build of 2" x 4" between the daggerboards? Have they pulled the pin and lifted the keel? Doesn't really look beefy enough for that application ... hmmmm

I did that trip years ago on a motorboat- Very cool trip but I remember parts of the canal being on the shallow side...

Is it possible that the keel is on a truck? Can you motor a boat like that around without it?

I reckon the outboard is for maneuvering- a stern-thruster type of arrangement.

If the outboard is there as a backup, it's a very bad advertisement for Volvo engines...

The second engine is probably to compensate the loss of steerage of having no keel. This will prove very helpful while in the canal and going through some of those locks.

Would she be heading all the way up the canal through Rochester? I've GOT to see that thing when she comes through!!! Too bad there's not a tracker on it so I know when it's close.

Why would you? Boats fall off trucks, light poles get taken out, insurance may or may not be available, you need wide / long load permits and escorts, and probably a bunch of other stuff. Plus your already paid for crew has to do stuff they don't know much about. This way, you have smart boat people doing smart boat people things.

Sounds like a fun delivery.

There's no real rush for Thornton to get the thing the Chicago anyhow. I would assume they are going to do both Macs?

That's awesome, did some sailing on lake Erie two years back, the sailing on freshwater is a fairly...surreal experience

May as well take the keel out if it's too shallow

Edit: clearly I didn't read e whole thread before I posted.

And the comment about using the outboard as a thus tear is a great idea. I should assume that at low speed the turning circle wouldn't be great without a true keel

The monohull record is a little less than 23.5 hours (I think) set in 2002. It would seem that this is within reach of Il Mostro. They would need to make an average VMG of 14.5 knots or better.

Math is not your strong suit - 289Nm in 23.5 hours is only 12.3 knots average
