What is really sure is that at this time, the GPMA team hadn't yey learned all the driving tricks of the boat and they were very far from sailing G4 as fast as it could.
GPMA had been sailing for a year and 1/2, the G4 was in the water since more than 3 months, even if they were new to VO70 they should have been ahead of AD (the boat was one month old, right from qualification miles). Even IW was happy with their pace at the time.
The fact that GPMA kept improving for the whole 2 years' campaign is their biggest credit, working on their weaknesses every day to end the race dominating (on top of that obviously their sailing skills).
The opposite can be said about AD.

Pics or it didn't happen?thay had won the fastnet with better speed than GPMA. after dismasting they entered a loop on lack of results/huge pressure, lack of time to develop (boat and new sails) and change gear, lack of confidence + whining attitude, and crew personal problems. IW has great responsabilities in this mess, for sure more than farr. He lost control. I am very hard with him as in my opinion he has also big responsabilites in the OD decision, which I believe has ruined VOR forever. He has proved twice that he is not able to run a team in such a race, now he forced everyone to an easier level, but he will probably not even be good enough for OD.
---------------
So who was it that gave IW a black eye then?
Which leg was on?

Want to run a book on the likely candidate?I think there was a video of him with a black eye for "falling the stairs" as in most domestic violence stories, after that someone told he had been beaten by some crew. it must have been short after brasil (or short before)

I believe with commando start he means somoeone on a VO70 leaving at same time of official start but not officially entered in the race.
it will not happen of course.
o i thought he meant they would leave their panties on the dock...

Ian with back eye. Injury isn't exactly consistent with the rumour. You can see the line where the pipe struck.
Seriously, if you believed the rumour, you would be looking for the crew member who was suddenly no longer part of the team at the end of the leg.

considering how safe the VO-70 was, that's far more likely than something breaking or him taking a digger. Great logic.

Clean, it was not my logic, I did not take this story back in the thread, it is GBH. Then mad asked what this rumour was and when, this is the correct explanation of the rumour. Rumour came out after he showed up in a video with a black eye. Putting it down in a soft/funny way is normal on this forum and makes the story less important, serious and more entertaining. I didn't think you need a "blink" emoticon to get it.

Hey, don't drag me into this. I'm just here for the giggle factor.

Guys, go to the MOD 70 European tour and discuss a real boat race. Let the Volvo made up stories die

They didn't recognise him as international media, maybe?Didn't you get a ride on one of the MOD 70's very early on. If I remember you wrote positively about them.
what have they done to get up your nose?

I was involved in a MOD70 programme in the early days and in those days there was nothing stopping the programme from taking over the world. lots of orders were in and the fleet was buzzing.
As it progressed and the delayed effects of the GEC took over some programmes before they even started (Morocco) and some after they splashed (Foncia and Veolia). As a result the organisers have two boats for sale as well as all the onshore building moulds, tooling, machinery etc and the priorities and budgets have shifted. As is so often the case, keeping the hype going and making sure that every sailor in the world knows exactly what is going on on the water and off the water, during races or during down-times has fallen by the wayside and we now have a tracker in french, poorly translated stories that appear well after the event and absolutely no live coverage.
It is undeniable that these boats are incredible spectacles when they are at full-tilt and if they were burning around doing tight races anywhere near me I'd be up there watching and supporting. Unfortunately they are focused on fairly uninspiring venues when they should maybe have taken a slightly closer look at what OC have done with the X40s.
That's my view of it - have away.
