It may have been asked once or a dozen times so I apologize if it has been discussed. Is the name Melges pronounced Melgez or Meljez? Thank you for the help.

From a previous topic, I think the conclusion was a hard G, although proper English would suggest a soft G.

I still pronounce it with a soft G even though I know it is probably wrong.

Great, now it seems as though it should have been a poll. I've got one post saying hard G and another saying soft G. I'm right back where I started from. Though I appreciate the answers, I am tired of walking around saying it one way then saying it the other way - LOL.

I'm positive it's a hard "G" accept when I purchased my last two 24's I think I pronounced it with a soft "G" when I saw the bill.

Melges (pronounced mel•gis),

From the Melgis Website 2012....

You tube video interview with Buddy Melgis, who speaks the boat name several times with a hard G!

I was at an airport once and a guy had a coat on with Melges on it, and I asked if he owned one. I pronounced it with a soft G, at which his reply was something along the line that anyone who knew anything would know it was pronounced with a hard g. Dumb ass...he may be correct, but really that response?

MELGES gear is available to anyone on their website. The Boyz from Zenda are perfect gentlemen. Your "dumb ass" won't be one of them.

Buddy was on a boat I was competing against and for a God of the sport, could not have been nicer. They were docking at one point and hit the dock pretty good, Buddy took advantage of the situation and with a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face walked off saying "docking is not my department.". The kind of guy you would love to sit and talk with. I'm sure the apples fell pretty close to the tree.

Scow sailors in Wisconsin pronounce it MELL-Gus. (More of 'guess' than 'guhss.') And +1 on Buddy being the most un-snotty rockstar you can imagine.

Try calling the factory after hours ( like now) and listening to the message...

Seems to me the G is pronounced the same was as in Girl and generally Melges rhymes neither with "mel gus" nor with "Mel guess"

It is sorta in between

None of this will help...

I have been in Austin for well over 30 years and half the twits at the yacht Club, some who have known me from day one, have visited my website, and have called my cell phone and answering machine still cannot figure out how to pronounce my name.

It is like they think I learned it wrong or something.
