Not what we define as a sportboat in NZ but..

A local here in Chch has ordered one I believe, although it will likely be kept in Auckland.

But watch out for the Shaw 11m http://www.shawyacht...om/SYDmenu.html, also another local, but he has to finish his second carbon Shaw 650 first.

Looks like someone is finally building a modernised Young88:

Shaw 950
The Shaw 950 is a traditional style cruiser-racer that offers sufficient internal volume for standing headroom and all the comforts for family cruising, while being a competitive club and coastal racer.

Systems are set up so the boat is manageable for a regular club-racing crew to enjoy sailing the boat and extract a high level of the boat's potential. It hs a fixed keel and a diesel inboard.

Construction is underway, with glass laminates over a foam core, and a carbon rig.

The 950 has the popular Shaw boat attributes of being powerful, yet efficient and easy to handle.

Upwind 65m2
Jib 25m2
Gennaker 110m2
LOA 9.5m
LWL 8.9m
Beam 3.3m
Draft 2.5m
Displacement 2350kg

Just to aid understanding; the one design Shaw 650 is a glass boat, not a carbon boat.

Well there you go, I for one thought the Shaw was all carbon. makes the performance all the more impressive, but perhaps not the price.

This thing is a weapon. I jumped on last minute for the coastal classic after my ride (8.5multihull) pulled the pin due to the extreme forecast of 35-45kts
Man what a ride, the boat is seriously awesome. we smashed 2 hrs off the old 35ft and also shaved 30minutes off the 40ft record and now hold both.
Sending it hard, see the video link below.

Gybeset raises a good point, half the threads in this forum are about boats that don't have a SMS rating. Maybe it's time to rename the forum to something more fitting, like Super 30s ...

Dont fucking kid yourself, at this point in time SMS is just as flawed as any other measurement system, except IRC because you can't fiddle with the numbers. Anyone who says they would rather sail an SB3 or some other shitbox so called ASBA measured boat rather than this Elliott35ss is a wanker. The vid looked awesome. The boat looks fast and I want one, but I still think the Cone would smoke it downwind. It was a fucking sportsboat and people should get off there high fucking horse and go yachting.

The problem we have at the moment, people who have built sporties to a rule and which boats are successful will need to change them because of the soon to be changed self righting rules. Ffs if what GYBSET says they should go sail a skiff because that's what these boats are. Please people get a life and chill the fuck out!

Its not New Zealand. Its a very small group of guys who log on to this site day after day to utter their BS pronouncements about what qualifies as a "sportsboat," even though that term doesn't have a commonly agreed upon set of defined parameters. Their attitude is not welcoming, its akin to that of an ultrastrict Muslim imam who is happiest tagging something as "infidel."

And as you might imagine, they're happiest declaring something as "not" a sportsboat. Check out "Gybe Set's" posts, I'd guess he's rendered that "service" a few hundred times.

For some personality types, nothing gives so much satisfaction as denying entrance into the club.

Just read through this thread expecting some insightful and educated comment about an exciting boat, unfortunately I wasted a lot of time reading some self indulgent drivel.
Awesome boat and video. Thanks to those who made informative posts.

GybeSet you have single handedly ruined this thread with your pedantic shit. A while back mumm 30s popped up in Sportboat anarchy but I didn't see your nazi ways bulldoze those threads? Anyway back to the Elliott 35ss I think it's a pretty damn cool boat, it's such a shame boats like this stay more around the pacific like NZ, aus, west coast etc. I even remember there was a boat called Ambush from HK that looked pretty cool before they had the mills 41

because the yachts you mention already qualify for another appropriate forum, thus duplication

You pedantic prick!

Sportsboat is a state of mind, not a formula.

Which part of this is not a sportsboat?

A Hick 30 with a canter in her- she was a weapon as soon as you pointed her nose downwind! Unfortunately she could rarely sail to her rating so the owners just rocketed around the course until they got Mark Mills to design the new Ambush which is also a weapon, just a bit more restrained!

I calculate about AUD $450k with sails and instruments landed in Aus. At that price a little more than a MAC 38 last I checked. Unfortunatly unless you can get these types of boats to sail to their rating in at least favourable conditions, they tend to be orphans.

Its a real shame when the commercial viability of bloody good, really fast and exciting boats is stifled by a fundamentally flawed rating system. As one who once bit the bullet and built an out there non-rating fun fast boat, the E35SS is an exciting prospect and something I would far rather sail than an artificially slowed down chunk of mediocre white plastic.

It will be interesting to see if any of the new keelboat rules such as HPR can fix the orphan issue. It would be nice to see something similar to the super 30s expanding up the size range.

Perhaps but my guess is that it'll be as successful as IRM or less so since they've set it up from the outset for designers to game.

HKG it's great you somehow made the time to arg.. comment participate in the ar discussion

it's a very cool YACHT (that being the operative word)

cause the Ed thinks he was sailing a sportsboat and put the FT10 in here (trashcan forum?) ....
a sportsboat is now a cat1 keelboat

I 'get it'

can we just agree this is SO by decree

btw
How do you think the Viper will go in the transpac. or a Rocket 22 to Hobart

should a MC38 enter the Airlie sportsboat division? or the next lake taupo SB gig ?

Listen fuckwitt
a yacht can be anything from a supermaxi to a dingy so by calling it a yacht you are not proving that it's not a sport boat you are merly proving that it is a boat that is powered by sails
Give up on your pointless argument

Secondly there should be no length for a sport boat some would say that a VO70 or Wild Oats XI is a sport boat because they are just big sport boats.

How about this for a metric to define sportsboats:
A ballasted monohull capable of sailing its own boatlength in 1 sec.
There are boats that can do this, everything else is a "sports yacht" or super 30 etc.
or whatever designation you want to use.

So a Vo70 doing 40 knots is not a sport boat because it takes a whole 1.06 seconds to sail it's own boat length?
You have contrived a definition to try to justify your opinion that "sport boat" is less than some arbitrary length. The whole definitional controversy is boring and meaningless.

Funnily enough, according to the phrf ne definitions of a sportboat:

1. A displacement/length ratio less than 100
2. An upwind sail area/displacement ratio greater than 30
3. A downwind sail area displacement ratio greater than 75
4. A sprit length more than 50 percent of J

a VO70 fits the definition (I'm actually not sure of 4. - I couldn't find a measurement for the sprit). I'm sure that wasn't the intention of the rule, but hey, if the foo shits...
