I love the slice of humanity vibe at Oak Bluffs. All kinds are attracted and tolerated, without it being an alternate universe like Provincetown. We always get a slip, moor stern to, and become part of the boat gawking scene, where I enjoy being an ambassador to the sailing community among a mostly powerboat crowd. "Look, a sailboat. I like that one."As a kid/teen in the 70's, my aunt owned the Harbor View House in OB on Circuit Ave., next to Jim's Package Store right across from where the old Island Queen docked. It was a two-story, 20 room hotel with shared baths half occupied by college girls working on the Island for the summer. Very loosely operated. Truly an amazing time. Coin diving off the main wharf was always lucrative too! Good fun, great memories of OB....

If I have to pay for a mooring I'd just as soon go to Menemsha. The downside there is that someone will likely raft up. The upside is great seafood and reliable free wi fi without having to leave the boat. But yes, of all the towns on the Vineyard I like Oak Bluffs for the reasons KDH stated.
I'm not so sure I can fit into Menemsha. Went there last summer with the NYYC Cruise and we were quite comfortable in a gentle Southerly anchored outside. Sadly I missed Oyster Happy Hour at Larsen's after I anchored out while I was waiting for the racing crew to show up. Stupid me sat on the boat reading.
We like all the towns, but our favorite is Oak Bluffs. Vineyard Haven is probably the least favorite; part of that might be self inflicted since we always seem to forget the BYOB on the boat...

Quite a vibrant and wonderful word picture you guys have painted about Oak Bluffs. Sounds like a fantastic place to spend some time and create memories.
Oh, Booms...the stories of MV/OB are legion. There's still time in the 'ol CA' CDT Annual Cruise' for a stop over...
Some of my fondest childhood memories are of OB:
* Getting soaked on the bow of the old Island Queen
* Grabbing the brass ring at the Flying Horses carousel
* Spending the summer with my aunt and cousin, my best friend being a porter at her hotel
* the college girls who crowded the hotel all summer
* waking up as a 13-15 year old to find thier visiting friends sharing my bed as overflow (I wisely removed the door lock)
* 'herbal' smoke filling the air to half way up the staircase
* fireworks and the park bandstand
* Giordano's pizza slices
* losing my virginity and getting caught (TMI, I know)
* the decrepid second story movie theater and scary silent movies above the bus garage - wind blew through the walls
* working at the taffey shop
* the bars on Circuit Ave that I was too young and too well know to enter
* coin diving to entertain the the ferry passengers, filling my mask with $10 of spare change 4x/day
* hitchhiking (everywhere) to South Beach and back to body surf
* sunsets/sunrises against the red clay cliffs of Gay Head
* underage drinking at the Hot Tin Roof, listening to owners James Taylor and Carley Simon play live
* walking the docks and being invited to spend a tropical storm aboard a creeky, wooden 60'er (Petral?)...I swear this is what cemented my love affair with big boats
* ginger bread houses and the campground
* being invited aboard the very first 'go fast' boat' I ever saw, Hot Ship, a 38 ft. Magnum (I believe) owned by the distributor (O' Donnell?) tied up to his 60'er at the dock, Tuff Ship....and spontaneously going to the Harborside in East Greenwich RI with my dad for lunch in something like 1.5 hrs when I was 13.
OB is a lot more commercial and crowded now than it was in the 70's! It will alwys bring a smile to my face.

When are you all going to be in MV this year? We have a house up there and tend to spend way too much time on-island in the Summer.

What's the address and the alarm code? We would be happy to drop by.

KDH, enjoy Labor Day on the island. I love it when the August people have left but the water is still warm, the air is not so scorching, the hiking paths are more crisp and the beaches are emptier. September is a beautiful time to be on-island.
I however will be racing to (and from!) the Vineyard in the Stamford YC Vineyard race that weekend so you'll have to enjoy the island without me.

Ditto on Vineyard Race. Wish they had a 'weekend layover' class! We'll have just returned to WLIS a week earlier from a Club cruise in that same neck of the woods. These LIS deliveries are starting to feel like bus rides.

These two fantastic photos taken by George Bekris (photog extraordinaire, mstr sail), demonstrate the boat porn diversity that makes Newport incredible.
Manaaki is a stunning Friendship 40. I don't usually care for dodgers as they rarely seem to complement the lines of a sexy classic, but they have done this one up right.

Tentative plans:
July 13/14/15 (Fri/Sat/Sun) Newport and or Jametown, possible raft up in Dutch Harbor on Sat.
July 15/16 (Sun/Mon) Cuttyhunk
July 16/17 (Mon/Tues) Martha's Vineyard (Oak Bluffs or possibly Menemsha)
July 17/18 (Tues/Wed) Provincetown
July 19/20 (Thurs/Fri) Chebeague Island, ME
There's flexibility in the above. Just need to be at Chebeague by the 20th.

Very shallow...
I may be around for some of this; we were rather hoping to start working our way up North by midweek next week but we'll see. We aren't one a tight schedule at all, but we are all itchy to get someplace outside of our home waters.
We were not planning to go to the Vineyard this summer, but head North. We are also likely to skip P-Town on our way to Maine as we've been there recently.
You are planning to go through the Canal from the Vineyard and not go around the other way to P-Town? Even never checked to see which is longer. The outside way looks longer from the Vineyard.

BJ - hope you can make an appearance before we lose you for a while!
CdT has a 7'2" draft so we'll be chosing spots accordingly. I'm not even sure we can/should get into Cuttyhunk harbor anymore
My thinking is to take the canal from MV, not go outside. I'd like Booms to see it. Plus the current will give us a nice push to P-town.
All - here's a profile shot of CdT. Once we have a list of participants, we can share cell phone numbers in a PM.

If I remember correctly it's Mung, curm, maybe Anom2, maybe BJ, and I that have expressed interest so far. Anyone else?
It would be great if we can make the call for Newport or not on Sa night, as I'd like to reserve at 41 North as soon as possible. If Su night is Cuttyhunk I'll be there too and will talk to Seth Garfield about food for us, ideally a clam bake on the beach.
Of course we should leave some flexibility in the schedule for weather.
7'2" is a challenge for Tashmoo.

7'2" at Tashmoo is nearly impossible, unless you bring your own dredging equipment. I bump at the highest tides at 6' 6". Friends were there until yesterday and all 3 have shoal draft boats (5' 6" or thereabouts) and it was dicey for them to get in (allegedly). I didn't go but I am sure I would have gone to VH instead.

I'll be there. In one boat or another.... Can somebody clarify the Cuttyhunk trip details--- departing (Newport?) on Sunday? I may be only "provisional" for that trip depending on how the boatwork is coming... But I'll definitely meet up with all when you're in the Bay. Great sailing weather here lately. Was out last evening on the old Pearson with daughter and dog. Leisurely sail and then swim off Goddard. Good day.
Correct. The idea is to leave Newport on Sunday in time to arrive Cuttyhunk mid/late afternoon after the weekend crowd is gone.

Should we pick a radio channel to monitor, share cell phones, or in some other way figure out how we will hook up and let everyone know we are in? Around here 69 is frequently quiet unless an R/C is using it.
I like the idea of Dutch Harbor much more than Newport but it sounds like that's not settled yet.

I'm in for Dutch/Newport and Cutty as well, now with my father-in-law rather than my nephews.
I'm away in ME with my daughter for a few days, away from internet, phone, electricity.
I think those that have expressed interest so far are Mung, curm, Anom2, BJ, sailman, DrewR, me. Include CL on contact list PM. WHL and Booms on Mung's boat.
Looking forward to meeting everyone.

WHL here..
If anyone else would like a small burgee, I have 2 more available. PM me if you would like me to bring them too.

I've had (and still have) a mysterious overheating issue to remedy beforehand but a solution is on the horizon. As a side benefit, CdT is already 50 miles closer to Newport! It's impossible not to smile when I receive menu updates from from WHL and Booms...this is definitely not my usual 'kiddie camping' M.O.!
CdT's mooring/anchoring arrangement in RI is still pending (hopefully Newport mooring). As soon we have a weather forecast for Sat. and a final count on participation, I'll propose a final schedule and distribute the attendee list. This will have to be done by Wed. with updates thereafter by cell phone/e-mail.
But here's what I'm tentatively thinking - please pipe in:
Friday afternoon: boat porn and provisioning in Newport
Friday night: casual dinner and pub crawl in Newport
Saturday day:
Option 1: the more boats, the more desitrablea raft up in Dutch around 1430. For those originating in Newport, a 1200 harbor start and sail around Jamestown to Dutch.
Option 2: the fewer boats, stay moored in Newport and take in the scenery.
Saturday night:
Option 1: if already in Dutch and the weather cooperates, anchor at Dutch, BYOB cocktails/starters aboard, dine in Jamestown
Option 2: if in Newport, dine in Newport after BYOB cocktails/starters aboard CdT, Quill, etc.
Sunday morning: depart for Cuttyhunk (tide dependent)
In Cuttyhunk, CdT will likely have to anchor/moor outside the harbor

Definitely worth a trip in to check out if they ever dredge the entrance. A really great hole in the side of MV that has great kayaking and a good beach for relaxed swimming. Not for a boat which draws 7'2" though.
Suggest that you all do Oak Bluffs rather than Menemsha. VH is (regrettably, since we live there) boring.

Bottom line, looks like a fleet of six (6) boats. After discussing this with a few of you, the OFFICAL start to the CA Yacht Club' Narraganseet Bay Rendezvous will start on Saturday in Dutch Harbor at 1400. Plan is to anchor just north of the mooring field. Rafting or sunflower, weather dependent. Please monitor VHF channel 69 and hail 'CA Fleet' upon arrival. Look for the 'Spike' burgee. CDT is happy to host the fleet at 1700...but please BYOB with an appetizer to share. We'll finalize dinner and entertainment plans at that time. A few boats will have children and stay aboard for the evening. On Sunday, we'll leave early to arrive at Cuttyhunk by 1200. For those joining us, please ping KDH with headcount for the clambake.
Coup D'Etat (yours truly, WHL and Booms) will arrive in Newport on Friday by 1200 to provision and play. We hope to moor in Newport Friday night but if no availability, will anchor in Dutch. Plan is to spend Friday evening in Newport. Anyone who would like to join us is welcome and encouraged. Either hale us on 69 or call me on my cell.

Dorothy at Cuttyhunk Shellfish has to scare up some help for our clambake, with which there's some uncertainty because of the late notice. I'll know tomorrow at about noon for sure if we can be accommodated. Will let everyone know as soon as I know. I'm optimistic we'll be able to work something out. Mung, curm, and I will be there Sunday night. 7 of us in total.
I will not be going on to Cutty, though odds favor us making it to Dutch.

Seriously. I don't eat seafood and I can pick at least 5 other places that are better.
The Net Result just advertises well and has a decent location that everybody passes.
Edit: If you all do wind up in OB after hours (10PM onwards) one of the best things to do is to hit up Back Door Donuts. It's not a gay bar or anything... just a window on the backside of a bakery that they sell fresh, steaming, hot, melty donuts out of as they bake them all night long. Has gotten pretty well known and but the donuts are still out of this world. BJ I'm suggesting that you have an Apple Fritter... and your cardiologist on speed dial. It's in the parking lot behind the OB Post Office which is on the SE corner of the intersection with the Offshore Ale Company and about a 5 minute walk from the harborfront. Follow your nose or the line of locals.

Is the Net Result the place you pass on the bus from OB to VH, near the Kayak rental place? We opted not to go there because it seemed rather pricey compared to other places; with half the family not into seafood it seemed over the top.

Driving from OB into VH it's right on the outside of the 90 degree turn you take right after the large fuel tanks. Has a patio and picnic tables right on the road.
I find that after a night out in OB I'll get a fritter, eat half and then have the other half for breakfast the next day.
Works out nicely.

Best line of the day was from BJ "I wasn't sure if I was going to tell anyone at the club that I was off to raft up with a bunch of people I met on the internet"

Funny, I got the same line at work this morning, "you met up with a bunch of unkowns you met on the INTERNET?"...
Alternately, "I have two kidneys, I figure one counts as risk capital".

Thanks again for feeding Alan. Food is very important to him. He's a good sport. He was meeting a bunch of people that his son-in-law met on the internet, and he likes old cars, not sailboats, but he had a great time in the end.

Here's one of his cars. He did the restoration himself.
Tell Alan I am jealous, very jealous, but I'm still a Porsche guy!

1) Kudos and thanks to KD and Mung. Only sorry to have missed the Cuttyhunk portion....
2) glad to hear about the cherry stones and steamers.... I figured Booms and WHL really "needed" to experience them.
3) Was Alan there at Dutch on Saturday? Sorry to have missed meeting a fellow gear-head-- "here's mine" (no not a Jag or Porsche but some good old Detroit steel purchased and "restored" while in high school and now a daily driver but, wouldn't you know it, down for the day Booms and WHL needed to make a provisioning run. I had her back on the road Sunday.... )

Yeah, lucky to be here.
Took my Porsche for a beating to Woods Hole for dinner tonight. Top down fun, there's a great road along the coast that's my new favorite place to 'unwind'.
Tell Alan I said hello and would love to see (by that I really mean drive) his E-type, a bucket list kind of thing.

Lots of laughs with good folks. kdh, seafood dinner on the beach was fantastic
We are moored in Provincetown, Cape Cod. Have enjoyed some fantastic sailing on Mung's sexy boat.
Tomorrow we depart for Maine which is about a 100 mile leg.
So wonderful to meet kdh, Anomaly2 (thanks again), BJ, Sailman and Drew and all. BJ , I am looking forward to filling your trip blog. Your boat is fantastic for your plans.
, my video of you rowing makes me laugh. Great racing you, and your sense of humor with all our ribbing was fantastic.: )
Back to downloading gribs for our trip tomorrow. I have some great pics which I will post when I eventually get home
CL, sorry to miss you, friend. So many good memories of our sailing adventure last year.

Alan was there at Dutch, had curm's ear for a while talking cars. He's recently been busy restoring an '63 S-type saloon and an MGA.

That and investing in a set of whitworth tools.Sorry to have missed meeting him during our brief time at the raft-up. But, oh dear, it sounds like he has an affliction--an affinity for British motor cars.... This reminds me of a remark my brother once made when he learned a friend of ours was contemplating buying a British classic: "Don't you know what the British national motto is? 'To fail nobly'-- that's fine for heroes like Shackleton and Scott, but do you really want that to apply to your car??"

I owned a 1959 Jaguar 3.4S in my previous life. Beautiful car, and it actually started most of the time-- much more reliable than the Lancia 1600 I subsequently owned. I can understand why Alan loves to restore them.

Anomaly2, it was very cool to meet you and your dog. Hugs to Scout for me. Thanks for all your help running us around to provision. The fish dish you made for Dutch Harbour was delicious and it was nice to meet your daughter. Great to have kids of all ages hanging out with us at the raft up. BJ, thanks to you and your wife for "hosting" us and for your anchoring power. kdh, again thanks to you for the wonderful dinner at Cuttyhunk. It was a very fun evening.
First set of pics are from Dutch Harbour raft up.

Really good times. Those pics bring it all back. Thanks for posting, Lin.
First time I've been able to log in in two weeks! Great times. Really enjoyed meeting you all. Will definitely need to get the bottom cleaned, lose the dinghy, add sail area, empty the fuel, water, gray and black water tanks and find some more competitive crew mates to keep up with KDH next year! I love this photo of Keith in INK....Booms. WHL and me chasing him down with our motorized dink! That darn dinghy flies!
Presently back at Chebeague Island, ME.....

I took some video of our dingy race, but we are all laughing so hard, it's ridiculous.

John - sorry we'll miss you! Yes, the Sonar's are sweet sailing boats....so much bigger than the Ideal 18's we use in LIS. You have to be 55 to helm in this event so I only get pulled along for tactics and to drive the jib....meaning thighs full of bruises by Monday!

I assume spinnakers aren't allowed.
