Interview link?

http://new.livestrea...ooceanrace/Leg8

EDIT:
no interview with G4. The official statement was that G4 is not able to call due to difficult weather conditions. Nothing else.

It seems from the tracker that they've picked up with their speed... now in range comparable with others 22-26kts.

GP speed drop... are they careful with the golf of biscay break boat conditions?

not sure but it reminds me the cap horn stage where they let camper pass by playing careful.

If I remember well at some point in southern ocean GPMA decided to go with keel in the middle to charge less structures. Maybe they tried to check what difference in speed they would have with a safe setup.

after bleeding 10 miles in 2 hours and having camper passing by, they might have got back to full throttle

Does anyone else find it interesting that Telefonica doesn't seem to have the straight ahead jets they had the first couple legs in heavy reaching they had earlier in the race? Part of the staysail limitations?

I would agree with that .Try out now before hitting 40 knots breeze. Good call on Groupama. 40 knots in the Bay = bloody big seas. Stay safe to all the fleet. Brilliant leg.

Yes the bay is really a breaking boat area, each time there is a vendee globe or any race start from france the gulf crsoosing is tough for men & boats.

Or they hit something, and were checking if their keel is in good shape?

can they pull the boat ashore in Lorient?

And GPMA just hit 34.1 on the live tracker. That is the highest speed I have seen so far. I guess there is nothing wrong with G4... The Kitty seems to hold a more conservative average right now. Come on, light up the Pussy.

They already had speed blips before, my guess is that something is broken and they struggled a few hours to fix it. :(

G4 in 4th, this would be the perfect result for Telefonica

We can see the main sail completly lowered while the N°1 is at the top of the mast.
Probably a halyard problem, maybe due to their new mast.

Btw, instant speed on tracker are just calculated from the difference of 2 GPS positions (on 1 min), which both are rounded!
This explains why we usually get often the same values,

a single "34.1" doesn't mean anything but two lucky rounded numbers

A message posted by Y. Riou on the Groupama site confirms that their main got stuck at the top. Not good with a freshening breeze. Brad Marsh spent 2 hours up at the head of the main fixing the problem, in 30 knots of wind and with the boat still driving at 20 knots.

Off topic a little but the folks said that on today's 'The Price is Right' show one of the final prizes was a trip to Ireland, with a ride on a VOR boat or vip pass thrown in. Somebody was doing some marketing work! This game show has been on for nearly 40 years in the US.

Anyway, highest award today to CN on Camper. I was ducking the wash coming over the deck onto him. I'm surprised the headgear made it. And Clean's interview of KR was excellent. Missed the others and will have to go back and check them out.

...soooo true,,it's guaranteed to be full-on tomorrow,,
,, for a rtw race,,it's pretty darn accessible for a small plane to get out and take some -unforgettable- shots.

I laid out the measuring line for about 50miles dead ahead of Camper and left it there for an hour. It is amazing to see how far they are travelling when you have something to measure against. All these boats are hauling arse, man how great would it be to be a fly on the transom!!!!

Gotta like the position of Puma and Tele here, versus G4 and Camper. Inside, sailing deeper, puts them in a position to time their gybes based on what the other two are doing.
Strong positions there.

700 m. to go, all sailing about 50d., TWA about 130, not sure how relevant gybing position is. May be nice to have the searoom to drive off without crossing the rhumb. Guessing Rhumb is about 50. My money is still on G4 for the money shot into their homeport if the fleet stays close.

501 G4 (including Brad Marsh riding the mast for more than the 'required' 8 seconds) + Clifford
500 Puma

Solid work from Tele - good speed and they're in the right position but I think G4 will give them a really good push.

I think Camper did broaach a few minute ago, a big course alteration to weather and then back on course but speed below 20 for about 3 minutes

Think Puma just did the same, downspeed for 3 mins.

Oops looks like Tele just did the same.

Gotta love this, being able to watch a live tracker while boats are pushing past 500 nm in 24 hours.

Good interview by Clean as well. Great to be able to watch live (ish) racing while at work.

G4 course change.
I'm going to guess they'll try and consolidate in front of Puma.

here's VO's #'s for the 24hr run so far....
''CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand, current holders of the IWC Schaffhausen 24-hour record for the race, continued to stamp their authority as the fastest boat on the track racking up the top 24-hour distance with 514.2 nautical miles and an average of 21.4 knots.

Telefónica followed closely behind with 513.3, followed by Groupama, 512.4 and PUMA with 512.2, while Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing and Sanya are yet to crack the 500 mark, with plenty of runway still to go.''

I would not like to be on Telefonica when they go for the gybe going by there inport handling. Groupama for the win and I think the race will be lost and won on the gybe. I just hope all the crews have bicycle clips in 40 knots and a gybe coming up, respect.

good morning,
it seems my read of a safe approach by GPMA was completely wrong.
the guys have been pushing really hard, and since sunrise they are attacking, pushing their "superkantingFigaro" as they learned in these waters.
tele holding very well. change in shift? iker at the helm?

I belive 24 hr. speed record possible from late this afternoon through the night. possibly more than one boat.

Cammas just said in the live interview that they are stuck with 2 reefs in the main, which is the good setup now with 30 knots of wind, but wasn't this morning when the wind was a bit slower.
He said they lost 12 miles because of their main problem, and is going to be very costly in the end...

Little update from the live audio :

The problem was with the mainsail top battcar (right word ? chariot in French), they had a spare one and in fact added the spare one below the other (if I heard well)

Otherwise curently they have 30 32 knots with a kind of chaotic sea, 2 reefs in the mainsail, wind getting stronger

They can see Puma and Camper

Main issue is to manage the waves and "holes" in between two waves, with rather heavy shocks

And they don't really have any "marking" strategy with respect to the other boats, just looking for the best moment for the gybe to come around end of the day..

Very difficult to hear.

30-32 knots having increased from earlier this morning, downwind, sea not too good.
They see Camper and Puma a little, though the only strategy is timing the wind rotation to SW, in the low, right.
Problem was the mainsail head car, they are using a spare car on the lower reef position, old car is still at mast top, should be Ok to go to one reef.
Currently 2 reefs and two headsails (I think that's what I heard)
The gybe will have to happen in the strong winds section up to 40 kts.
The helm is key in gaining any extra-speed. Much more work than on a multihull.
It should be very tight coming into Lorient in 25/30 kts

some correction :
They have 2 reefs and use a staysail.
(I don't understand if it is a real staysail to complete head sail, or just a shorter head sail abusivly called 'trinquette" (staysail)
They see Puma (which seems to run with J4 sail) and Camper a little.
They hope 1 reef will be ok with the spare car. "It should be ok" said in an optimistic way.
-> My understanding is they don't want to try yet (maybe why they loose a little in the last 2 hours) and anyway the wind will re-increase soon.

I don't think G4 can catch up with Tele till Loriant.
Not after their mainsail issue (and, IMHO, their late tack south of Sao Miguel).

For Groupama it's now more important to hold off Puma and Camper.
With a lead of 8 points over Tele, G4 can well afford to finish 2nd in the last two legs
- as long as they are ahead in the inport races...

Timing of the gybe will be essential. And keeping the boat alive...

When you look at their track and the low speed, it seems as if Tele had a really hairy moment! Maybe it will make them drive a bit slower for a while! (I hope!)

maybe they went back to 2 reefs (or sail change). probably that is the reason for gaining a bit on G4 in last hours, reasonable that cammas did not try to go back to one reef with the main problems.

Somethings not right, last fifteen minutes they have had four changes in direction with a general bear away and low speeds, maybe weed and trying to shake it off.....who knows, now is when the other guys need to get some ground back.

Few things more about the translation of Cammas ITW:
Still 3 or 4 hours in a strong wind (about 40 Knts) then easing conditions after midnight UTC until the arriving in Lorient.
And a nice french saying: "Qui voit Groix, voit sa joie" : "Who see Groix, see is (en)joy(ment)"

;) traditional fishermen saying:
Groix marking the return to Lorient or Groix itself, once prominent Biscay fishing ports.

The second half of the saying is less good: "Qui voit Ouessant, voit son sang" " Who see Ushant, see his blood"

Edit: looks like the day in the office will be productive ;)

Actually not quite right!

2 x 5 = 10 if G4 was 2nd and Tf was 1st, 2 points difference and if G4 is only 1 place ahead of Tf in each in-port then all tied. using usual countback Tf with 4 leg wins (6 if they win the next 2) would be the overall winner. Not checked the NoR or SI's though, can't be bothered. Either way makes for a fascinating last few races.

Wish I was there to watch.

See ya on the water
