So 49 days out, and while the old Strewth looks like it's appearing as LMR some of the usual suspects have not yet entered?

No Ragamuffin, Pretty Fly, Balance, Exile, Mahligi, Minerva or even Lahana? So quite a few 50's and a fair few 40's are missing from the start list. And there's not a single Sydney 38?

And to get all the preliminaries out of the way....

1) I don't know what the forecast is yet. Ask me in 52 days.

2) DoRag - yes, this is an Australian race, being talked about on an American website, on a tool invented by an Englishman, typed from my computer which was probably produced in Malaysia.

3)
Foreign enough for you?

4) So who is going? LDH, guessing you'll be gracing SYC with your trade at the other end?

Strange, we are entered - have seen emails between the sailing office and the pbo - but we are not listed on the site as yet.

Relax - the Minerva Nautical School for the Gifted will be coming. Sorting out Cat 1 and getting entry in at the moment.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves last year and are looking forward to doing it again.

Just seen this now sorry Jase, been head down butt up in the study books.

Yup, we will definitely be there! Looking forward to it, pretty young crew for us from what I gather thus far so should have some fun :) Dont drink all the rum before we get there.

I can assume everyone lost interest after last years shite conditions?

Last years conditions were pretty kind from memory, warmish weather (for that time of year), a few glass outs but mostly 8-10kts wasnt it? Suited us nicely. Agree it would be good to have another breezy first night like the year before though - that was good fun!

Hrmmm yes Posted Image Last time I was on board for one of your sops races I had clipped up the 'half ounce puddle of love' ready to be hoisted. Without realising it was the chute in question, I proceeded to plunge my forearms and hands into the bag and help it out by the armful as it went up ... and then I realised... looking down at my hands in despair and shaking my head.

Someone should print off some warning labels for you guys to have attached to your kites. I think its warranted before future bowman proceed to manhandle your chutes.

So Minerva is in fact a "train the trainer" kind of school?

1) Place delinquent schoolgirl over knee.
2) Paddle.
3) Repeatedly.
4) Post video online....

The entry list is looking good now. There's some great boats there.

Once we are in Southport however, I can't see any competition for the socialites on LMR.

Based on Southport Yacht Club's "grab a granny" social scene, did you expect the LMR team to have any competition??

Where's Victoire?

SMB 3.5 making a return because boat still unsold?

Last I'd heard (and I'm happy to be corrected on this) is that Victoire was a bit bendy now due to her "raced hard, put away wet" lifestyle and the boys were not so keen to go offshore anymore. If nothing else, she has been very actively raced and maybe everyone is concentrating on work/family for a bit?

Correction:
Victoire will not be racing in the Southport race due to focusing on winning Hamilton Island Race Week. After winning Port Lincoln there was quite a bit of damage on the delivery back to sydney, and the owner is not willing to take the risk of damage getting the boat upto Hammo.

A quick run of the numbers:

NSW - 59
VIC - 7
QLD - 2
TAS - 2
SA - 1
WA - 1

A good spread and about what you'd expect. Numbers from VIC and QLD are probably a bit soft. 70+ entries isn't too bad with a bit over a week to go before entries close.

Strong compeition in the usual segments should see some close racing on the water:

Fast 50 footers - 5 x TP52s plus Living Doll, SMB 3.5, Scarlet Runner, Terra Firma (where's Georgia, Emotional Hooligan and Shogun?)
Fast 40 footers - Mr Kite, Anger Mgt, Pretty Women, Chutzpah, AFR, Veloce and Celestial (where's OCL?)
40 foot CR - 3 x Archambault40, 4 x Beneteau 40, a Cookson 12 and an X41

Not too long now...

Actually its not bad.. A few IRC tweeks and a complete inventory would have had it on the podium more at the NSW IRC states in Port Stephens. I mean its not going to set the world on fire but got the other 40-50 footers on corrected and also Loki and 2 of the 3 TP's in races without a J1 or an A1 for a regatta sailed in sub 10 knots and a very old re-cut mainsail. it couldnt make the 10 mins up on Hooligan but the 3 or 4 needed for the others was very doable.

The boys had a great time and the twins are the nicest guys around, Winning isn't everything for them. And Im sure the local RSL is a metric shit tonne richer with the amount the younger guys spent!

I'm doing this race on a big comfy cruiser, save me a seat at the bar.

no seats at the bar

:(

oh well.

Should be fun, 3-4 days maybe, otherwise we will just motor, flying back to Melb on Wednesday.

Shogun is still on the hard with a hole in her bottom..... Something about struggling to get the nomex to repair the delam suffered in the delivery from Gladstone. So why not just pull out the spare boat????

Scarlet Runner has suffered delam to the bow again on the delivery to Sydney and returned to Melb.It happened from reports just out,or through the heads and lost engine power at the same time. Had some on!

Ouch, that puts a big hole in their plans. I had heard they were planning to head up mid-this week (ie. leaving yesterday). If they'd left it until today they'd be motoring on a mill pond.

Shame

Divisional splits won't be announced until it's too late to argue / change, however, there should be some interesting battles on the water amongst the following groups:

Fast 50 footers - Ragamuffin, Couger, Calm, Frantic (nee-LMR), SWD, Living Doll, SMB 3.5, Terra Firma
Fast 40 footers - Mr Kite, Anger Mgt, Pretty Women, Chutzpah, AFR, Veloce, OCL2, Equinox, Yeah Baby and Celestial
40 foot CR - 3 x Archambault40, 4 x Beneteau 40, 2 x Sydney 38s, a Cookson 12 and an X41

Any other grudge matches?

Wild Oats is on their own for line honours with Blackjack, Loki, Lahana and maybe Brindabella being in QLD waters before WOX1 has finished.

I reckon the fast 40 fotters has the most interest with a number of new-ish boats untested in longer races. Winner will come from this pack is my bet.

Don't forget about Accenture No Babies in the 40 foot division.
Very true. What's the background to this GP42? Is it the one previously owned by Rod Jones?

Mex
Yep, it's the old Fermax. Not the best of the GP's but they are having fun.

Your a goose.
Why?? Everything I said above is true... All measurable performance gains as well. But what would i know.. It's not like I was there or anything..

Not a grudge match as such but looking forward to Local Hero, Onya and L'Altra Donna fighting it out again. Each boat finished in the top few places every time they met in the IRC champs series last year. Makes for good racing! :D

its been there long enough but i hope it stays a while longer, good to see georges name on something still.

mind you if its a run all the way it will be hard to find complaints from anyone.

no bets yet, i guess this week as the forecast firms up the jugs will be on.

Re-read my post, I said it is not the best GP about..... You come back with "Well actually......." You come across for one half arsed event that was attended by 2 good IRC boats in shit, shifty conditions and you want to tell us all about the boat and how it could be nearly 10% faster with some new sails???? Give me a break, even for a sailmaker you talk some shit. 3-4 minutes in a up/down race is heaps.

Mate, I know you were there, I heard all about it......... Are you the only one that knows the twins? Did you stop and think for a moment that the bloke your replying to didn't know them and needed to be schooled in them? Have I never sailed the boat either? Do I not know the crew???

Having said that, and back on topic, the GP, the RP42's (Chutz & Equinox), Veloce and the Kers should have a great race. The punters from Tow Truck will be on OCL2 and will obviously get spanked by the AFR mob but I am sure they will all go good. If the twins don't run out of smokes and drivers, they could find themselves amoungst it for a podium. But it is all AFR for mine, if I had enough coin for a bet!! Great crew for this one.

Not going this year and regretting it a little but i will be warm at night at least. Will be going out to watch the start and will throw some words of encouragent out for the super bowman Jas.

You need to relax bit.. I was highlighting It could be much better than currently is, Everyone knows this.. Making a general statement like "It is not the Best GP around" seems odd as it doesn't race any other GP's.. I would have thought you would understand how much Boat speed difference the correct sails, Not just new sails adds.. Ie #1L instead of a #1H or an A1 over an A2 and also a rating that is too high based on a few outliers effects the Corrected time. Add that to some crew training and a team that has sailed/trained and the boat arriving a bit earlier than 1.5 hours before the first race..

I am not making excuses... Far from it, I am pointing out the things that need to be worked on. Everyone with eyes and a bit of sailing knowledge know this.. Its why we sail, to better our skills and make boats go faster..

A good comparison was comparing it's Elapsed and corrected times against Loki as there was a GP 42 in WA that stacked up against Limit. Don't tell me Im full of shit when the numbers have been run.. 1+1=2 mate.. Simple as that.

But I do agree there will be a good 40 footer fleet. Its a shame the new 44 isn't doing the race..

Pretty light breeze by Monday I think ...

AFR/OCL sounds about right with current conditions. Who knows though.

Cant remember too much about the year before last except that it was fast on the first night. Did it stay in? I cant remember. Might be similar conditions to that.

The current weather forecast for the race from yachting meteorologist Roger Badham is for strong winds and a probable race record for Wild Oats XI.

I was wondering when this would first be reported based on actual weather reports...

Each year I like to think about which boat I would least like to race to Southport. More often than not, it's The Stick. This is usually due to a forecast involving light conditions or anything forward of the beam. This year would have been their time to shine, given the forecast, and they're not entered!

So who would you pick this year?

Any one of a number of caravans will have a painful time running deep in a large-ish seaway. Never going faster through the water; just deeper. There's a number of IOR designs which will be wobbling and rocking their way north. But I think I'm going to have to go with Mortgage Choice Rumba this year due to her tiny weeny chutes combined with her Cadillac style handling.

Your thoughts?

11 odd ton of Beneteau 45 might be interesting in 20-30 knots 70% of the race with shoots. Hope they are well made!

Yeah, getting either of the Benny 47.7's up out of the hole and running would win my award for "least fun ride ever."

I'm staying positive 'cause I'm not going north on a Benny 45 this year.

Wow, Calm II need to do something about their IRC rating. Giving away between 20 - 40 points to the other TP52's is a tough hurdle to start with.

Any thoughts on how well Duende will handle the hard running conditions forecast?

Mr Kite seem to be the odd boat out in IRC Div 1, but with their rating...

Both IRC Div 1 & 2 are chockers with fast and competitive boats. It's gunna be a great race.
