I rescued a mockingbird a couple of mornings ago from my cat. This morning he was singing away in the front yard tree. Don't ask me how I know, I just do.

And ditto on why it is dive bombing, there is a nest close by. It will pass.

I grew up with indoor outdoor cats. They are great little hunter squirrel rats lizards rabbits etc but the biggest battle was with the blue jays. Every now and then we got a present of a pile of blue feathers. Heartwarming

In Oz there is a bird called a Magpie that does the same. Usually attacks from behind. One defence is to draw a pair of eyes on the back of an old hat. Said to be effective. Never needed to try it though.

"Gee, that bird is annoying.... but not so annoying that I'd actually go to the effort of standing up, abandoning my spot in the sun, and walking over to the patio and lying under the table. Screwing is about the only hobby I can afford right now. No progress on the kitchen. I am broke as fuck tight now. Should be starting a kitchen remodel this week I'd the designer can get her shit together. Should be a decent enough job to get my ass back to zero. Once I rein in the failure of my business, I'll go back to throwing money back into the giant pit of dispair that is my house.

Back in Bama there was a Mockinbird that used to annoy the crap out of some poor cat. Everywhere that cat went, the bird dive bombed him, he got used to walking around with his head sort of low, but what you wrote is exactly what I thought ... that cat could have put one paw and one sharpened nail into the air and end it once and for all, that bird wouldn't have had a chance.

But it was apparently easier for the cat to just deal with constantly being dive-bombed.

I think Nacra is right, although it need not necessarily be a kill swing, just a tap. These birds have been left alone by us KFC-eating humans for so long that they have apparently convinced themselves that they are not the fragile little feather-dusters that Mother Nature made them to be. Around here, there are lots of Canadian Geese. They'll stand in front of the car on the road without worry, they'll run up to people and honk, basically making nuisances of themselves. But at any moment, they are one hand-swipe away from having their neck in fist. That would probably give them the human fear they apparently need. I stopped slowing down for them when they're in the road, lo and behold, they can move pretty fast when a ton-something truck is headed at them.

We raised Toulouse Geese for almost 20 years....they make great watchdogs...if there was something on the property day or night, they let us know.

Geese can be tenacious and terratorial, even if they know they have no chance of winning, something comes in their territory and usually they don't back off.
